itunes + iPod classic freezes

When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes, every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)

The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.

Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I'm using itunes 7.4.1.2

After 7 hours on the phone with Apple over this....AND....a replacement iPod with the same problem....Apple Care just told me I should try a 3rd iPod....claiming I was unlucky and just got two defective ones in a row....and of course said that they hadn't heard this problem from anyone else.

I think I may just get the Archos MP3 player....160 GB Touch Screen with Wi-Fi for $400....plus it has an attachment that lets you DVR tv shows and watch them on the go....how cool is that?

Screw Apple....I quit.

This is very frustrating. I added about 60gigs worth of music, photos, and video to my new 160 and it freezes more than a popsicle. I've completely given up syncing to my home computer. My new computer at work still freezes when the ipod classic is connected, but nothing like on my home computer. I think I might have to go back to my 60gig until there is a fix. I might walk to the Apple store today and see what they say.

My 160 Gig iPod is now syncing perfectly in iTunes. After struggling with computer freezes, slow syncing, computer hang-ups and so on I now have a very fast iPod. None of my music needs authorization because it is all in .mp3 format from CD's. None from the Apple store. Today I tried to sync some "free" TV shows from the Apples store. They downloaded fine but would not sync to my iPod. I discovered that I could not sync TV Shows because my computer was not "authorized" by Apple to play the content. Apple allows a max of 5 computers. I had just upgraded my RAM from 2 to 4 Gig and I also changed my user login account under Windows Vista to another name. Along with adding this new 160 Gig to my 80 Gig account my computer was no longer authorized. It belive now that every time I tried to copy songs from ITunes to my 160 Gig iPod it was hanging up when it attempted to sync the "Unauthorized" content, such as the tv shows. Today I "authorized" this computer configuration and everything started to work perfectly. I can now drag and drop a thousand songs at once and keep using iTunes without a hiccup.

Check to see if your computer is trying to sync content that needs authorization. Check to see if your computer is authorized. In iTunes Click on Store and then click on Authorize Computer. Eject your iPod and reconnect. Give it anohter try. Hope this helps.

I don't know if anyone else tried this(^), but thanks to getting another work computer I had exhausted my five so I de-authorized them all so that now the only authorizations are my desktop (work) and my desktop (home).

Your idea sounded good (at first), but now that both computers are authorized it's still freezing (after it finish playing an album, every couple of seconds after doing a [seemingly] easy task)

Didn't make the walk to 5th Avenue today, but will try again tomorrow.

I had the same problem, iTunes freezing after 8-9 seconds of play and just overall being laggy when Ipod Classic was connected. I myself have a 80GB.

_*Heres a temp Solution*_

The fix is simply changing the Drive Letter Assignment for your IPOD.

So to Reassign/change the drive letter your IPOD is currently using follow these instructions ( http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/506/vistaxp_reassign_change_driveletters)

+_Basically go to_+

Control Panel > Switch to Classic Mode > Go to Administrative Options > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management > Right Click your IPOD > Click "Change Drive Letter/Path" > Then choose the Letter from the Drop Down Menu.

I chose "I" for IPOD and I never use more than 4 USB ports. If you have many Partitions or USB ports being used by storage devices you might have to go for a "higher" letter such as "X".

After this is complete, just eject your IPOD from itunes, and close itunes, and reconnect your IPOD. I did this in conjunction with Authorizing my computer as told above, but the Authorization didn't do anything for stopping the freezing.

_*The Reason*_

Windows is unfortunately messing the way the IPod syncs with your computer because of the drive letter assignment. Many of you use your USB ports with USB keys and External Hard drives, and these are essentially the things that are hindering the syncing of the IPOD because windows is mixing the External Hard drive and IPOD up.

Okay, so we still all have this issue.

I have an idea. Let's start going to the press about it. I've noticed, strangely, that all the reviews of the iPod Classic neglect to mention these issues, since presumably, they didn't test for more than a day or so in most cases.

So lets send them a link to this forum, and see if they can get some answers from Apple. Just an idea.

I have a custom made system that runs on a Intel P4 with Hyperthreading. I don't experience these problems with my iTunes but on my 80GB iPod that I purchased recently has an issue that it doesn't display the artwork most of the time. When it does it shows the artwork for a different album at times or when it does show the correct artwork it tends to freeze on the display and not respond unless I reset it. Most of the time it runs smoothly but when those glitches happens it can be quite bothersome.

I don't know about anyone else but I am rapidly growing tired of trying things to fix this problem. Nothing works. I honestly believe that it is not in OUR power to fix this on our own. WE should not have to be spending HOURS trying to fix this problem. Apple should have already addressed this and had it fixed FOR US! The product has been out in circualtion for over 2 weeks now. I see us as having 2 options...we can return the thing or wait for Apple to decide to give us a fix so that we can begin to enjoy our $349 purchase. It is amazing to me that a product this bug ridden can be released to the public. Sometimes the only thing that corporations understand and appreciate is the dollar and the loss of it. If we ALL return them that would certainly send a BIG message. Apple get your crap together!!!!

Well, i've had the same problems as most of you, and although it hasn't undergone much testing, i believe i have a temporary solution.

When i connect my 160G Classic to my computer, I open iTunes and then after waiting the two to three minutes for my ipod to show up in itunes, i push control altdelete and go to the processes tab and end the process IpodServices.exe

Then it seems my ipod works normally, i.e. no long freezing periods every time i click on something. You can't end the IpodServices.exe process before iTunes recognizes your ipod or else it won't recognize it. The downside to this, and the reason it's only a temporary solution, is that you must do this every time you connect your ipod to the computer. But hey, waiting while the computer is frozen one time is better than every time you click on something, right?
