When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes,
every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)
The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.
Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?
I hace the same issue but with the 160 Gig, every time i modify any song information, both my itunes and ipod freeze for about 30 -40 sec. (clock in hand)and suddenly reacts. I don't know perhaps it's due to the USB connection instead of using a firewire??
I felt rather hopeful during the first 15 seconds of trying your temporary fix, but after that 15 seconds, I realized I had the same problem as before.
I think it is obvious that this is a REAL problem and it sure seems to me that there is not a good solution. I don't know about the rest of you, but I am sick of trying every "new fix" that is listed here only to not have it not work once again. I appreciate the "fixes" being listed and I totally appreciate all of the effort that it has taken people to come up with these possible "fixes". I think the time has come for us to put our efforts and time into pressuring Apple to come up with a fix for this. To me, it seems like they are going to be the only people that can come up with a "fix" that actually corrects this problem. I have certainly learned my lesson and will not be jumping on any "new" Ipod technology if/when it comes out.
Maybe I'm the only one but this latest iTunes has certainly reduced the lag times with the classic I've been playing around for about 45 minutes now and its only froze once and its only right after a sync when its trying to determine gapless playback.
"If we ALL return them that would certainly send a BIG message. Apple get your crap together!!!!"
As someone sitting on the sidelines, impatiently waiting for this issue to be fixed before buying a new iPod, I share some of your irritation. I really want an iPod that holds my (currently) 110 GB of mp3s. I'd especially like a new iPod before going on an out-of-state next week. My 5.5 generation 80 GB iPod is choked full.
What's frustrating is that all Apple had to do was copy the previous iPod Video model while increasing its HD size. They would've scored a home run. But no! -- they had to muck around with the user interface and screw up synching.
If I didn't already have an investment in iPod peripherals and an iPod wired car I would probably switch to a different brand now.
What I really want is a bigger HD in my 5.5 generation iPod Video. I wonder if there's any way to switch the 80 GB drive for a 160 GB drive? It would probably cost as much as buying an iPod Classic and swapping drives would certainly void my Applecare warranty.
Aaarrrrggghhh! Sometimes it seems Apple intentionally cripples their most popular products just as they reach maturity.
Now using iTunes 7.4.3.1, and the strain on the CPU actually seems worse. Instead of freezing for 30-45 seconds, I've been experiencing 1-2 minute freezes with the iPod Classic 160 and iTunes.
Another problem worthy of discussion is that certain tracks on the iPod simply never play. This became apparent during the iQuiz game on the iPod, when it would ask me what album a song came from, without playing the song. I notice that many songs in shuffle mode refuse to play. Manually browsing to these songs doesn't allow them to play either.
Yet another problem that I'm noticing with time is that if you pause what you're listening to, and plug in the iPod, not only will it not connect to iTunes, but the iPod freezes. I have to unplug it, reset it (holding Menu and the center button,) wait for the Apple logo to disappear and for the regular iPod menu to come up.
Still, the biggest issue is that iTunes freezes whenever I wish to interact with the iPod, whether I'm transferring music or video, or simply clicking around my iPod library within iTunes. Also, I wonder about the strain it's putting on my computer's CPU. It can't be good to be maxed out at 100% for minutes at a time.
My final plea to Apple before getting my money back:
Good people at Apple, I have been impressed with your products, but after spending over $350 for the 160 gig iPod Classic, I've found that this product can't reliably perform even its most basic functions. What is worse is that while a notable chorus of upset consumers have cried out, you've refused to even acknowledge the issues we speak of, let alone offer any solutions.
I have spent well over 48 hours of my own time troubleshooting what you have refused to acknowledge, and I'm not feeling very good about that.
If you cannot at least acknowledge these issues by the time my 30-day return policy is to expire, (10.16.07,) I will be returning my purchase with a bitter taste in my mouth towards these new iPods. Of course, I will feel encouraged to tell people not to buy these products.
For the last time... PLEASE do something about this.
iPod operates acceptably (a little slow) on its own, but iTunes becomes almost unusable when it is plugged in.
iPod Classic 160GB. About 75GB full. Most of it music, a few TV shows, podcasts.
I have it set for manual synching. I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 on all of the computers. It has the same problem on both of them. I also have a 30GB 5th Gen "video" iPod which continues to work fine. 1.0.1 firmware. Current iTunes via Apple Software updater.
It will lock up...
- after you click on the iPod to look at it in iTunes
- when you attempt to delete a podcast you've listened to
- when you try to copy a podcast (or several) to the iPod, usually when the progress bar is nearing 100%
Eject similarly takes ages.
It always comes back. The function you were trying to perform completes.
When it is "locked up" it is completely unresponsive. Clicking on minimize or show desktop produces no action.
Couldn't take it anymore. I've experienced many of the problems that have been mentioned in this thread (slow response, random freezes, slow ejecting, skipping songs, etc...), so it went back today.
It's gonna kill me to be without an iPod, but the current situation was simply not acceptable. I'm a retail customer, not a beta tester. This was the second one I tried. The first one had a seriously defective, noisy hard drive with even more frequent and longer freezes. The second was a little better, but not much.
This was to be my 5th iPod (20GB 4th gen, Shuffle 1GB, Nano 4GB, 5.0 Gen 60GB), and it was the only model I've ever had any problems with.
I'm willing to put up with some inconvenience, but this was just taking it too far. I'll be the first in line for another one (or two) when all these issues are sorted out. But for now, no thanks.
I also threw the towel in today. I bought a 160 Gb Classic a week ago and have tried unsuccessfully to sync it all week. Numerous attempts, numerous retores, numerous, freezes, numerous variations of sync, numerous reads of threads such as this and no success. It loaded fine and began to sync but froze after a while and then when finally ejected had not stored many songs. Useless. I took it back to the Apple store and true to many other's experiences the Geniuses say that this is the first time they have heard of the problem. The only good news is that I did receive a full refund but that does not really do much for the huge disppointment.
