itunes + iPod classic freezes

When I connect my 80Gig iPod classic to my windows XP machine and play music through the PC's speakers using itunes, every time a song reaches 9 seconds iTunes freezes for 26 seconds - the music still plays but the iTunes window is frozen with no responses to mouse clicks. After the 26 seconds all the mouse clicks happen quickly as if they were queued up and the ellapsed song time skips to 35seconds and then continues on normally. During this 26 second freeze iTunes takes up 50% of the CPU in the Windows task manager Process screen. (The 50% is actually 100% of one of the 2 cores of the dual core CPU)

The freeze also happens sometimes randomly later in songs.

Plugging in the iPod takes about 1min for itunes to start up and it takes about 2 minutes to eject the iPod which seems long, my nano is significantly quicker at this, and exibits no iTunes freezes. This freezing happens on 2 different PC's that I've tried. Anyone seen similar behavior?

I'm using itunes 7.4.1.2

hp, Windows XP

yeah. i have an 80 gig and it hangs itunes left and right, although perhaps not as long as other people seem to be getting. whatever the case, it's still ridiculous. i took mine to the apple store a week and a half ago and the "lead genius" told me that they have "not had a lot of these coming back." he plugged into into a mac and it told him that my ipod had not been updated with the firmware fix 1.0.1, despite the fact that i downloaded it and installed it the day it became available and that i click "check for update" every time i connect my ipod, at which time it told me that i had the most current firmware. so he formatted my ipod, installed the new firmware fix and then put some songs on it and told me he had no problems transferring songs onto it with one of their machines.
when i got it home, of course, i had to format it again because he formatted it for mac. again, itunes told me that it has downloaded and installed the firmware fix, and continues to tell me every day that i have the most current firmware available. those first few songs i put on it, manually, it was fine. after putting a few hundred songs on it, again, manually, it started hanging left and right. the more songs i put on it, up to a point, the more it would hang on that last song i would add. it is no better than before i took it to the apple store.

here are some potential problems:
1. windows machines are not allowing the firmware fix to fully install, but
the ipod reports that it has been.
2. there is a problem in the firmware that makes the ipod slow down
significantly after putting a few hundred songs on it.

potential solutions? i have none, save for returning.

Like everyone else here I had the same problem with Windows XP.

However, I switched to using the MacBook and haven't had one single problem since. Would anyone like me to try anything to test it out?

I've currently got the ipod classic 160 using up 4.8gb with 1052 songs and 62 albums. I think I'm going to try doing a really large sync next to see if that freezes things up.

Sincerely,

IT

I've been very frustrated with the same freezing issue.

Here's how I got around it - but it doesn't solve the problem very elegently.

1. I create a new playlist called "IPOD SYNC"
2. I move everything I want to sync to the playlist.
3. When I'm ready, I move the playlist to my 160 GB iPod Classic
4. I go away from the computer for a few hours (or go to bed, etc.)

Itunes still freezes every few songs, but at least I don't have to sit there and watch it.

Apple - if you are reading this, then please take note. Itunes is not working well under Vista. Fix it.

Paranoid thought: I wonder if the sync is taking so long because Itunes is appending my Ipod serial number to each tune - in case I dare try to share my music?

I have both the 80 and 160 Classic models with all software and firmware updates current. I have tried every solution listed in this thread. Nothing works. iTunes and the Classic iPod no longer work together without a lot of pain. I cannot manualy sync my iPod without major freezes in iTunes. It takes forever to transfer songs. >>>> Is there any other third party windows software that works with the iPod. I hate the Apple interface and want a program that allows simple drag and drop from hard disk to iPod. Please!!!

I have all my library in my 160 Classic iPod (my HD is not big enough) so my doubt is if this freezing happens when:

- the iPod classic is connected (either the library or the iPod freezes).
- when you interact with the iPod.
- if you are only navigating through your iTunes library with no iPods connected.

This can lead us to the thought that maybe it's the iPod indexing system that it's slower than previous versions. I've noticed that the same amount of music used 1.2Gb of space for the album art in my old 60GB 5G iPod and now the Classic uses only 800MB so something's changed.

I also have the same problem and i think there is something wrong with hard disk, not the software, because IPOD hangs when i try to scan disk for errors in DISK MODE (as I understand DISK mode uses internal uC software, not updatable ipod interface, because it also works with formated hardisk)

and also there is a part of message when i tried to istall linux on ipod:

[INFO] Moving images to create room for new firmware...
Error reading from disk: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

And everything looks like ipod's hard disk is out of date or have an old Floppy disk inside 😀

Any new ideas?

It's inconceivable to me that Apple has put out this product as is and to not at least acknowledge the problems that still remain after 1.0.1. Am I waiting in vain that there might be a fix? Should I trust taking it back and getting another classic with the same problems and waste another 2 weeks going through the threads for possible fixes and updates?
Horribly disappointed.

I've tried everything. Latest version of iTunes, latest firmware and I restored it and tried ti with a smaller song set and it's still kicking iTunes to 100% proc usage ever time I do some operation. Even playing songs it peaks about 15 seconds into the song. I turned off all the artwork displays and that helped SLIGHTLY with the time it takes for the processor usage to go down but my guess is it's the updating of the last played time and play counts that are causing the issue but I haven't found any way to turn off that stuff at all.

All in all the iPod Classic 160 is the most expensive paperweight I've ever owned.Very disappointed.

Great, why didn't I do a bit of research before I bought my ipod!

As soon as I connect my ipod when Itunes is open itunes freezes and once I disconnect my ipod from the cable itunes becomes available again.

I really can't be arsed with all this hassle trying to get these gadgets to work. And I can bloody believe apple customer services are telling ppl this is the first they have heard of this, this is all I need to look forward to a customer service team like sky broadband! 'TAKE ME TO THE GALLOWS' PLZ !

Ditto, research might have led me to a different purchasing decision. The 80GB Classic is my first Ipod. The good news is I'm not seeing these issues although I haven't tried to load more than 8-10GB. I will load another 30GB this week while down on my knees in prayer (although this too has probably been tried by others to no avail). So far I seem to be able to connect/synch new content/disconnect without issue. Apple should be falling all over themselves trying to help the loyal customers on this thread...

you should try Anapod Explorer. It's perfect for transfering music: you see your ipod like a folder, but of course very well organized with albums, artists etc.

The trial version doesn't allow you to transfer music from iPod to disc, but with the retail version you can do whatever you want.

Remember that Anapod Explorer is NOT a player. So when you will want to play a song, Anapod will need to know which installed player you want to use.
