Problems with IMAP

Hello.
After Leopard clean install, Mail.app does not download any message from my IMAP server.
It downloads only folders, shows nothing inside.
Worked very well in tiger, works well in any other mail client under windows or OSX.

Mail server is on windows server2003, i dunno what program is used for mail server.

Connection doctor shows no problems.
Getting account info, it lists all my folders and shows they correct size, clicking on folder and "show messages" opens new window with no messages.

Having about 1,2GB and 50 folders, 5k+ emails.

24" iMac, Mac OS X (10.5)

Hi again,

I have installed Mozilla Thunderbird as a temporary "work around" (opensource/free). It actually works really well and for me better than Mail 2.0!

I know it is unacceptable to have to do this, but I cannot spend anymore time on the problem - I need to see what Apple do with Mail 3.

I have managed to return to the email functionality that I had with 10.4 but in a 10.5 environment. It also has some improvements around real time synchronisations, subscriptions to shared/public folders, and various plugins/themes.

I will continue when time permits to understand more about Mail 3.

I have the same problem, but not mdeamon server, just linux box with vpopmail and qmail. When I reboot to Tiger, it works fine, but in Leopard it does not connect to server:

Message:
Unable to Connect
There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Check the settings for account “account name deleted” or try again. The server error encountered was: The attempt to read data from the server “IP deleted” failed.

It only connects one of 3 accounts i have set up for this one server. When I disconnect 2 i can connect to 3rd and so on.
So I have to check accounts one by one, every time disconnecting other two before. Annoying...

I have a variation of this problem as well. Except, unlike the original poster, I don't even get folders from the IMAP server. It just fails to connect completely -- Mail on Tiger is fine, iphone is fine, other mail apps (thunderbird) are fine.

The corporate email i am hooking up to is Exchange (version?) on Win Server 2003. IMAP is enabled on the exchange server.

Any one seen a knowledge base article on this?

I've tried using the exchange option instead of IMAP. no luck with that either (but curious what that is all about - when Apple fixes this issue, will using configuring as Exchange be a better option?).

Also have tried setting up the email with the IDLE option on and off - no luck either way.

Meantime, it might be worth it for as many of us as possible to post a bug report with Apple here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/mail.html

The more of us that do so, the quicker they will get to fixing it.

Fixed the problem (for me anyway). Wow I feel dumb!

It was a simple matter of un-checking SSL for authentication on the incoming and outgoing server.

I am just so used to SSL being off by default in Mail 2.0 that I didn't realize it is set to on by default in Mail 3.0

Perhaps this will help some of you... but probably not those of you who are getting their folders, but not getting emails (like the original poster).

I use MDaemon (Latest Version). I fixed my IMAP problem. First I renamed my Mail folder in my User/Library to xMail. Then I restarted my mail program and that still didn't fix my e-mail problem.

Next I removed my IMAP account and re-created it. That fixed the problem. Now I see all my folders and my e-mail is now coming in. I should mention that I still left my Mail folder as xMail. The mail software recreated the Mail folder again.

I suspect that Apple did not properly update the mail messages.

Hope this solves all your problems.

Same here. My mail server is the latest iMail server, and Thunderbird works fine. When I upgraded from Tiger, my mail appeared to be fine, but I noticed that after I sent a test message to myself, it stopped copying sent items into the IMAP sent folder. I fiddled with it, and eventually cleared out Mail.app prefs and added my account back clean. That's when it only showed and empty IMAP folder structure.

Frustrated, I did a clean OS install of Leopard. When I finally got it set up, it still only showed empty folders. I also notice that it's trying to sync with the server, but shows "Received 1 of -2097149 headers" when I try to "rebuild" the mailbox, and it just chugs.

Apple, please fix Mail.app as soon as you can. I like Thunderbird, but like Mail.app's integration with the OS and other apps.

Hi,

Perhaps the Port for the SMTP needs to be set (or reset if once there under Tiger) to Port 587?

Since you had a question in another topic about the location of some setting and since there is a new presentation about the settings on the Outgoing Server in Mail 3.0 and Leopard, let me ask some very basic questions:

In Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information, click on the arrows beside the name of the Outgoing Server (SMTP), and then choose Edit Server List. Next select the Advanced tab of the resulting dialogue and compare those settings carefully with those observed more straight forwardly in Mail 2.x and Tiger or to see if Port 587 is selected?

I too am having a nightmare connecting into the following with Mail 3

Windows Server 2003
MDAEMON server 9.6.2

I have checked for MDAEMON updates but no fix there. I have played around with the folder flagging and everything is in order. Huge disappointment as I was looking forward to dumping MS Office and Entourage which I loathe but have had to revert to after prepping for months with Mail 2... groan. I have about 8 other Macs at the site which I cannot now upgrade until I find some solution.

FYI... Just spoke to Alt-N (makers of mDaemon). They too are aware of the problem, but the ball is pretty much in Apple's court. They agree that it appears to be restricted to IMAP clients. You probably could use POP and choose to leave the mail on the server. Not real practical for me because of the size of my mailbox.

I have to tell you... although Thunderbird has come to the rescue for me regarding this issue, I really can't get comfortable using it. I miss my Mail.app.

As I responded before. I too am using mDaemon (9.6.2). I am not sure why this worked for me and hasn't worked for others. I will try to explain precisely what I did again, in case I missed something.

I quit Mail 3.0. I then renamed the Mail folder to xMail in the Users/Library folder.

I then started Mail 3.0 to see if doing that would fix the problem. I believe I selected rebuild, but nothing really happened.

I then quit Mail 3.0 and started it again.

I then deleted my IMAP account and closed the Preferences.

Then I opened the Preferences in Mail and re-added the IMAP account. I think it started to download and rebuild the folders at that point. (Please note that I always left the old folder as xMail, as Mail 3.0 created a new one.) Also one thing to note, when I set up the outgoing mail server, it was testing it and kind of hung there so I finally cancelled it, but it still created the account.

I may have selected Rebuild in the menu, but I can't remember for sure.

All I know is that all of a sudden my e-mail started coming in again.

Brian.
