Unable to pair with Bluetooth a Nokia N73 mobile phone

It's unable to pair via bluetooth a Nokia N73 mobile phone with the latest firmware installed.

Bluetooth Assistant of Leopard only detects on it only one feature: just to connect to internet.

iSync can't work with this mobile phone also.

This pone was supported on Mac OS X 10.4.9 and 10.4.10, so... it seems that is a problem with the Bluetooth frameworks on Leopard.

Anyone has experienced anything like this?

Regards,

iMac 20" 2.4 GHz., Mac OS X (10.5)

A week ago I upgraded the firmware of my N73 from version 3.0649.0.0.1 to 4.0735.3.0.2. I have been unable to use bluetooth to transfer files, use iSync, Bluephone Elite, Salling clicker since I did this firmware upgrade of my phone. Before the upgrade everything worked flawlessly with 10.5, 10.5.1 and 10.5.2. I have tried to send a bug-report of this to Nokia as well as posting on Nokia's forums (linked to in the bug-report to them as well). I have now gotten a reply from them as following:
Mail from Nokia:
Thank you for emailing Nokia Care.
In response to your enquiry, if you are unable to connect your Nokia N73 via bluetooth with a MAC operating system, I would recommend that you contact them for further assistance.
Kindly note that the firmware update on any Nokia mobile phones enhances its existing features.

In case an apple engineer with knowledge of bluetooth reads this. I have now logged the bluetooth packages being sent back and forth between my 10.5.2 powerbook and N73 with firmware 4.0735.3.0.2. Nokia claims their "side" of the bluetooth connection is working and does not seem to fix something they don't consider broken. Without knowing what goes wrong and on which side someone with a knowledge of bluetooth at apple should take a look on the following logs:
1. I tried to send a file from my mac to the N73:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/sendfile_toN73.pklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/sendfile_toN73.txt

2. I tried to send a file from the N73 to the mac:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/N73sendfile.pklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/N73sendfile.txt

3. I tried to add the N73 to iSync:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/adddevice_toisync.xpklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/adddevice_toisync.txt

4. I tried to navigate on the N73 from my mac:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/navigateonN73.xpklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/navigateonN73.txt

All of these tests failed after having upgraded the phones firmware (it worked with the prior firmware) while using macos 10.5.2. Supposedly the N73 with this firmware works as supposed in 10.4.x (have not tested this myself).

There are work being done on Nokias forums to try to find a workaround for this issue, but so far no luck. ( http://discussions.europe.nokia.com/discussions/board/message?board.id=connectiv ity&message.id=14675#M14675)

Okay, I have now booted my mac from my external disk with 10.4.11. Installed dev-tools and done the exact same tests as with 10.5 and logged the traffic. All the tasks were successfull in 10.4.11 with the new firmware on the N73.

1. Sending file from mac to N73:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/sendfile_from_mac_to_N73tiger.pklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/sendfile_from_mac_to_N73tiger.txt

2. Sending file from N73 to mac:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/sendfile_from_N73_to_mactiger.pklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/sendfile_from_N73_to_mactiger.txt

3. Adding N73 to iSync:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/addN73_to_isynctiger.pklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/addN73_to_isynctiger.txt

4. Browsing the N73 from the mac:
PacketLogger: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/navigateon_N73tiger.pklg
Plain text: http://diverse.typelus.com/tiger/navigateon_N73tiger.txt

Hopefully comparisons of these tests in 10.4 vs. 10.5 will show the culprit and might trigger some ideas to how to fix this?

It does seem strange that:

Old Phone Firmware + Tiger = OK
New Phone Firmware + Tiger = OK

and

Old Phone Firmware + Leopard = OK
New Phone Firmware + Leopard = Bad

plus

New Phone Firmware + Other Bluetooth Devices = OK

Therefore, I hate to say it but maybe, just maybe it's OS X (and specifically something in Leopard)?

Either way it would be really helpful for some people from Nokia and Apple to talk together to sort it out and tell all the frustrated people who have posted here and on the Nokia discussion forums what can be done to sort it out.

I am nearly out of contract. I love my Nokia N73 (it is such a good device) but will probably now wait for a 3G iPhone (or maybe that's the point huh Apple?)

There is one other option missed out, which is

New phone firmware on other Nokia 'phone + Leopard = OK

I have two other Nokia models, and they both work fine with Leopard, even though I upgrade their firmware, too.

I hope that Apple do fix Leopard, since Apple updates are more regular than Nokia ones, even if it is a combination of both devices that causes the issue. Nokia should fix their end, too, but I wouldn't hold my breath for when we would get an update, particularly on older hardware like the N73. Worse would be if Nokia "broke" other 'phone models.

Another sync problem with 10.5.2. and the newest N73 software...Does anybody recognize this problem:

When syncing with the USB cable, the items I make with the N73 aren't being processed by iCal and Adresbook. For instance: I make a calendar entry or adjust the content of a contact on my N73 -> use iSync -> the entry/adjustment does not show up in iCal or Adresbook. Result: double or no calendar inputs, missing info for contacts, etc ->agony!
However, vice versa DOES work...

Anybody experiencing the same problem? And more important: does anybody have a solution?

Same problem:
I used Leopard (10.5.2) and Tiger (10.4.11) with much satisfaction i.c.w. my N73 (v3.0638.0.0.1)
The news is that my firmware is newer than the ones mentioned in this discussion:
4.0747.31.0.1
The bad new is (you guessed right): I encountered exactly the same pairing problem as you guys.
The other part of the news is that is now April 14th. Almost half a year after the first report and still there doesn't seem to be a solution (also looked at the discussion on the Nokia site)

--------------
Some background:
A Dutch TV program ('Radar') gave a lot attention to problems with (especially) the N73. I recognized the problems: drop-outs, bad gsm connection, no sound on the other side, etc.
Nokia responded to update the firmware to solve all the problems. Most people didn't know that there were software updates, just like me. The program also told that you cannot update with a Mac. (this saved me a lot of time and frustration finding out myself!). Look for the nearest Nokia Carepoint and that's what I did. Not knowing that would introduce this new problem.
Why aren't all the Nokia carepoints aware of this problem? They should have advised not to upgrade if I want sync with my Mac and Leopard. The problem was already known bij Nokia I now see.

The carepoint guy also discovered that my phoneconnector didn't work. He called it the "POP-port". That was also a known problem with N73's, he told. I never used the USB connection, but now I need to sync and that's also not possible.
Conclusion: I use the latest techniques from Apple and Nokia and I can't sync that at all. Is this really 2008?
Other conclusion: By teasing the Apple users Nokia is creater a bigger iPhone-market: we need an Apple phone to be sure that wil will keep on working with a Mac?!

In my case, my phone has the "latest" Nokia software since I first used it two weeks ago. So I can´t downgrade nor fix the problem on my own. Please I beg a solution, I trust Apple and assume that if Nokia hasn´t do their job sooner or later Apple will do it for them.

But it is a shame that a big phone company as Nokia is spend more than 6 months solving an issue for sure easy to deal with.
