Epson CD printing no longer works!

After updating to Leopard I have found that the CD Printing Driver is no longer installed. And no matter how many times i install the drivers from the Epson CD, they do not work.

The printer is the Epson R265. Has anyone else come across this problem with CD printing?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5)

Hi

I have the same problem with my Epson RX620 and Epson R285 printers. But only printing wireless through Airport Extreme and Bonjour. They work fine directly, including to the R285 onto CD.

On wireless printing, the message I get is simply 'Connecting' on the printer status screen.

I've tried resets of the AirPort Extreme, the printers, the USB hub - everything. According to the AirPort Utility, it sees 2 USB printers, and correctly identifies them. I've deleted them in the Printer and Fax dialog, re-added them through Bonjour, and it correctly identifies them and selects the correct driver.

Hi John
Re the driver - and for anyone else with an Epson / Leopard problem - Epson have a compatibility page posted on their printer drivers and Leopard, here: http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ViewArticle.aspx?lng=fr-FR&kbid=318461&data=0cc CGROWIYM58zV3pqc84XSlCX3F65SCFCJ4TNluNvcU003D&cl=1

Sadly, the R265, in the original post, and my RX620 and R285, are all shown as 'In Box'. So the drivers we already have should be compatible... and indeed mine are for local USB printing.

I did try resetting the Printing System by doing the Ctrl + Click where in Print & Fax, but this did not solve the problem of CD printing on the R265.

A few people I have spoken to have suggested opening the Print Admin Utility in the Utilities folder, but this appears to have disappeared since the upgrade.

How can I remove all the print drivers that leopard has installed?

Surely if I can delete these then I would be able to install the ones that come with the printer.

I too have a problem with printing with my Stylus Photo RX580 over the network. The queue that comes up (eventually it takes about two minutes or more) complains that the CUPS server is unavailable. I think this is a more general problem in Leopard and not necessarily related to any one printer driver. Resetting permissions did allow the printer to start printing but it freezes after about two lines and will not continue. Thanks for any help out there.

I have now followed various advice found on these discussion boards and from Epson.

I have removed all Printer drivers and Receipts, Reset Printing System and re-installed using the original setup disc, following the USB setup procedure.

And still I cannot print directly on to CDs/DVDs. This is getting really annoying.

Anyone else got any ideas?

I finally got it to work by reinstalling Easy Print from the Epson install CD that came with the printer (R260).

Won't print using Airport Extreme, but works OK connected via USB. I went to my friendly Apple Store and got a new Belkin USB Plus powered hub so I don't have to keep unplugging my iPod docks to use the printer.

I suspect a forthcoming Apple update will fix bonjour printing.

It took some doing, but I got this solved on an R800, so the same might work on your R625 -- worth trying, anyway!

I assume that your printer handled CD/DVD printing under Tiger the same way the R800 does -- there's a separate manual-feed driver you choose, then you put your CD/DVD into a plastic tray that slides into the front. I'll also assume you've already checked the Leopard compatibility list on epson.com to see if the RX-625 is among the printers for which Epson claims built-in compatibility.

If so on both counts, try this:

1) Make sure your printer is correctly installed under Leopard with the Epson print driver (rather than the Gutenprint driver.) If in doubt, check the printer list visible in the Printing & Fax preferences pane.

2) Launch whatever application you use to print CDs (Epson PrintCD in my case) and go to the Page Setup dialog.

3) In Page Setup, make sure your printer is selected in the upper pop-up. Then, in the paper size pop-up, choose *A4 Manual Feed*. Close Page Setup.

Boom, you're done. When you go to the application's Print menu, you'll see that CD/DVD printing is enabled, and when you go through the pop-up menus in the lower half of the dialog, you have all the choices you used to have, such as regular or premium-surface CDs.

On the RX625 the magic paper size may be called something other than "A4 Manual Feed," so check the sizes listed in your Page Setup menu for other manual-feed options if this doesn't work for you on the first try. (Why on earth Epson didn't name this size option something more intuitive, such as "CD/DVD Printing", rather than "A4 Manual Feed," is beyond me!)

This idea came out of something that someone else tipped me off to on this forum, something that I suspect may be causing a lot of people's Leopard printing issues: Under Leopard, the Page Setup menu is a lot more important than it used to be. Under Tiger and earlier, Page Setup was often kind of a set-it-and-forget-it thing. Under Leopard, the choices you make in the Page Setup menu influence the options that are available to you in the Print dialog

DP Gumby, what version of PrintCD are you using? There are some applications that don't have a separate Page Setup menu option (Preview is one of them) but the version of PrintCD that I've got does have one.

This is a separate menu option under the File menu... it's not part of the Print dialog box.

If you don't have a Page Setup menu option at all, you may have a different version of PrintCD than I have, but please post it so we can get this documented.

PrintCD will throw spurious error messages if your settings aren't correct (mine kept saying "Increase application memory") so you can't put too much stock in that error message you got about the printer driver not being installed. It could be that the driver is installed correctly and the actual problem is something else.
