Playing Second Life on new MacBook

I was wondering if anyone can play Second Life on their macbook. I just got the new Nov 07 macbook with 2gb of ram. I installed Second Life and am able to get to Orientation Island, but after less than a minute it freezes up. This happens everytime. I know this macbook isn't meant for games, but I've heard of other people with the older video cards that are able to play this game. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I still think it is a change that has been made to OpenGL, and that changing that setting in SL only avoids using that function in OpenGL. It's obvious that has been a default setting in SL for a while, so there must be something different about the function call. Also, because other games still crash immediately. WoW still bites the dust and I installed Nanosaur2 just for testing purposes and it too dies fast. I'm sure disabling the function in those games as well would probably fix it, I just don't now where to do it at.

Thanks again or this info!

*Step 1:* Using a text editor like bbedit or TextMate or even Apple's TextEdit (make sure you do it in text mode not rtf) open this file:

+~/Library/Application Support/Secondlife/user_settings/settings.xml+

*Step Two:* At the bottom of the file, but before the </settings> tag, paste the following lines of text

+<!--Enable object culling based on occlusion (coverage) by other objects-->+
+<UseOcclusion value="FALSE"/>+

*Step Three:* Save the file.

Finally got SL to run on my new macbook. It requires you to be logged on long enough to change one setting. You MUST have "Client/Server" up on the top menu first though. (CmdOption+ShiftD for a Mac) As I could only be in world for 1 minute at a time, at best, it took a couple of tries to make this work. Go to Client menu and near the bottom is "Debug Settings" NOT "Debug". Scroll to about 1/2 inch from the bottom to "Use Occlusions" Set to False. That's it!!!

Thanks much to DiscoStewie and mica50!!! (Hope I remembered your names right from the messages page).

I got one of the new MacBooks in November and have spent the last month looking online off and on for a fix for the SL problems everyone has described, including this thread.

Last night I saw the latest posts, and in 5 minutes I was up and running for the first time on this machine. Yippee!!!!

Weird possible side-effect is that in order to "right-click" to sit or bring up Profiles and so on now requires the Command key instead of the Control key. This is only true in SL. I still use Command in Firefox and everywhere else. Strange coincidence, or did others notice this too?

No big deal. I'm just really glad to be in SL on my laptop on the sofa instead of up by myself in my office.

I am as well. I fixed the Occlusion to false, and it worked for a while, but my avatar's movements turned broken and slow-sometimes even freezing for a while. I still sometimes float forwards with no control over my avatar and cannot stop (I have to log off when that happens). So, changing the Occlusions to false only works temporarily for me. (I got my new Mac in November, too)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!:)

I have played SL on several different PPC macs, Intel macs and Windows PCs and lag and crappy performance have been standard for at least 2 years now. The only SL Client that runs absolutely amazing is the Linux client. At least the things you describe above.
