iTunes 7.6 Keeps Freezing!

i just upgraded to 7.6, after having numerous problems with 7.5. now i still have all of the problems of 7.5 (burning/importing very very slow), but now, itunes 7.6 keeps freezing for like 30 secs, about every other minute. its INCREDIBLY annoying. anyone got any tips on how to fix this?

example: when i right click on a song, the menu doesnt pop up for 30 secs, and if im listening to a song, the track time will freeze for about 30 secs.

eMachines, Windows XP

Hi,
I have the same problems. ITunes 7.6 keeps freezing. (7.5 didn't make any problems) If ITunes freeze it doesn't work again (even after a big time period) and I have to close it.. Unluckily the close window button (x on the top right of ITunes) doesn't work (no animation either) and I have to do it via the Windows Task Manager. Unluckily again this is not possible. If I close the whole process, the ITunes window disappears but the actual process is still there (and doesn't close). It usually contains the largest amount memory binded.

As Apple doesn't seem to have anything done yet I would suggest to try to find similiarities between our computers. This means hardware and software comparisons:
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista 64 Bit Ultimate Service Pack 1, Release Candidate Refresh, Language: German
Filesystem: NTFS - encrypted with Bit Locker
DirectX: 9.0c

CPU: Intel Core2Duo 6600 (2.4 GHZ)
GFX: ASUS ATI Radeon EAX1950XTX
SFX: Realtek HD
Network: Marvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (10.150.40.18)
Mainboard: Gigabyte 965P DS3 Rev 1
Display: Samsung Syncmaster 226BW (22", connected digital)
Installed Software:
As I have a lot (some hundred programs) installed, it would be best, if someone can write his list of programs so i can just confirm what I have installed of those.

To everyone: please see whether you have anything in your computer then I have.

just by way of throwing my virtual hat into the ring i'm having the same problem. i gather its not as severe for me as others.

itunes repeatedly becomes unusable ... stalls and displays the spinning pinwheel of death ... but the OS and other apps are unaffected. then it goes away and i can use itunes for a few minutes. if music is playing it doesn't seem to interfere with the stream over to the airport express and speakers but i think the sync over to my appleTV stops. pretty annoying and pretty unusable. probably the most elegant microsoft application i've ever seen. oh, wait; its by apple. my mistake.

those who have been around ituning long enough to remember the event know this isn't the worst apple/itunes fiasco. there was a really great feature back in the 1.x or 2.x days when the installer deleted the contents of your hard drive if there was a space in the name of it ... courtesy of a malformed shell script in the installer. take heart boys ... it coulda been worse!

Just to add my voice to the chorus of discontent. I have the same problem with 7.6. iTunes keeps freezing for a few minutes pretty much at random when I try doing things like changing playlists, moving songs, editing data, etc., and processor usage soars to 100%. At first I thought it really had frozen ("Force quit applications" shows "iTunes is not responding") but when I tried leaving it for a few minutes it became responsive again.

At first I thought it was me, and tried the obvious things like deleting the plist, repairing permissions, and so on, but not joy.

Until this week I've never had any problem with updates. First I discover QuickTime 7.4 destroys the video component of most of my videos, and now this. What is going on, Apple?

Every time I try to start any video it just freezes up. I get about one sec of vid then the large screen box opens and everything stops.

iTunes does not use much CPU power when this happens but just sits.

This ***** because I downloaded a rental before testing my video and since it plays the first couple of seconds it says I now only have 23 hours to watch it. I imagine that trying to get my rental money back (or a credit) is going to be nearly impossible.

I did not have any problems with the last release.

Same problem, I tried running installer again selecting to fix damaged files and thought it fixed, but still have the same problem. After 8 seconds on videos and about 9 seconds on audio itunes is not responsive and CPU goes into overdrive for about 20 seconds. It is obviously scanning since it starts my external drive spinning. We have another Vista laptop that we installed same itunes (not an upgrade) and it works fine. I really don't want to uninstall and load songs and music videos again. I guess it's time to get familar with Windows Media Player and purchase from Yahoo or Walmart.

i am having the same problem. i upgraded to 7.6 because it said i had to in order to rent a video. not only did it take 1 hour to download the video, when i try to watch it my itunes freezes up. NEVER had this problem until today after my upgrade. i've been attempting to watch this video for the last 2 hours trying a load of different things to make it work and nothing does. i'm annoyed, frustrated and angry at this point.

You've got to be kidding me. Apple has been installing Bonjour as part of iTunes for as long as there has been a Windows version. But you are wrong, it isn't a program at all. It is a service that enables zero configuration of networked sharing for iTunes libraries located on the same subnet.

If you don't want it or need it disable the service or uninstall it.

Randy... NEVER has Bonjour showed up in my Add/Remove Programs list. NEVER before 7.6 iTunes.

And NEVER before has my firewall notified me of a program called Bonjour trying to access the internet from MY computer. NEVER.

If it was just a service, it wouldn't be in my installed PROGRAMS list.

and 1 more NEVER... NEVER did iTunes ask my permission to install this Bonjour program. and its NOT in their software agreement for iTunes.

I have no quams that Bonjour is a safe program - I would just like to know when ppl install crap on my PC. It's ILLEGAL to do so without my permission.

Jan 20, 2008 4:30 PM in response to Dreifort

Bonjour is software that allows services to be discovered on the local network. You can read more about it on Wikipedia here. When the first version of iTunes for Windows was released, Apple did not have Bonjour for Windows as a separate installer, but instead included the Bonjour functionality into the iTunes application itself. iTunes uses this to discover Apple TVs, AirPort Express base stations and other iTunes libraries on the local subnet. iTunes 7.6 is the first version of iTunes for Windows that includes Bonjour as a separate service, but it does not do anything beyond what the incorporated technology in previous versions of iTunes did.

Jan 20, 2008 4:40 PM in response to Roy B

I don't care what Bonjour does... I BELIEVE everyone that says its a safe program.

I knew NOTHING of Bonjour when I installed iTunes 7.6, so when my firewall notified me it was trying to contact someone on the internet... I BLOCKED it.

I'm not worried about Bonjour. I'm worried that Apple made NO MENTION of it during install or in their software agreement. So how was I supposed to know that Apple installed Bonjour or if I wasn't infected with some virus/spyware??

How? It would be nice and legal to prompt me or notify me in writing that it will be installed.
