Jordon,

What is the model / manufacturer of your computer (or motherboard if it's a custom built machine)?

Error 1 is ERROR INVALIDFUNCTION which seems odd, but you have the kitchen sink of Upper / Lower Filters there.

We're going to do something a little quick and dirty, just as an experiment.

On the start menu, click on "run". in the space it provides enter "regedit" without the quotes. This will open the registry editor.

Find the heading HKEY LOCALMACHINE. Click on it.
Find the heading SYSTEM inside it. Click on it.
Find the heading CurrentControlSet. Click
Find the heading Control. Click
Find the heading Class. Click
Find the heading that begins {4D36E965- Click

Go up to the Registry menu and select "Export Registry File... command. Make sure the "Selected Branch" radio button is checked and save that off somewhere that you can find it.

Then delete the LowerFilters key and select the UpperFilters key, right click and select "modify". Edit that key so that it looks like this:

0000 47 00 45 00 41 00 52 00 G . E . A . R .
0008 41 00 73 00 70 00 69 00 A . s . p . i .
0010 57 00 44 00 4D 00 00 00 W . D . M . . .
0018 00 00 . .

Reboot and see iTunes behaves differently.

To get the system back to its previous state. Run Regedit again and use the Registry menu -> Import Registry File... command and select the file that you saved off in the first section. Reboot.

What I'm trying to do here is see if the problems you are having are because of a conflict between iTunes and other CD software that you have installed by temporarily eliminating the other software.

I believe you have the latest firmware for that drive.

Oh gosh I am having terrible problems here. Every time I go to import any kind of cd, I put it into my drive and click import, and it begins the whole process... BUT it only imports about 3 seconds of each song! Is there any way to fix it? I tried down loading iTunes 4.9 and it didn't help. Here are the diagnostics for the CD is just tried to import:

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
iTunes 4.9.0.17
CD Driver 2.0.4.3

UpperFilters: incdrm (1.0.0.3), GEARAspiWDM (2.0.4.3),
Video Driver: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 GeForce4 MX 440
Check the website of your computer manufacturer or video card vendor to verify that you have the latest video drivers.

toonz,

That is correct BOTH hard drive and CD tracks are 3 seconds or less now. Even ones that successfully imported and played before the upgrade.

I check both the system and DVD/CD player sites and neither has anything newer than what is installed. The 1.1 firmware on the DVD/CD drive was installed roughly 6 months ago so nothing new there and the system has not had any firmware updates since the last one I installed after getting the system. The system is an older P3 system that is workstation class and generally has been very stable in operation.

I ran through the changes to the registry and nothing changed. Both harddrive and DVD/CD still exhibit the same behavior. I have now restored the old setting.

I have been experiencing the same problem with importing songs - iTunes only imports the first few seconds of the songs - I have downloaded the newest version, that is when this problem started. I have also wasted a lot of valuable time trying to sort out how to fix this problem. I agree with the comment posted above - this is bullocks - I did not realize I needed a degree in computer science to figure out how to put music onto my iPod. I was really hoping someone from Apple could help me out on the phone, but I was told my one-time free phone assistance from Apple expired 3 months after the purchase of my iPod. This is my first Apple product and I must say I am getting ready to chuck the whole thing. Is there any simple way to solve this problem once and for all? I ran the cd diagnostics - this was the message I got:

If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some Dell computers need an update to the ATA bus driver before iTunes recognizes CDs. If you have a Dell computer, check the Dell support website for details.

toonz, thanks for your suggestion! I did the Intel Chipset update but still have the problem. In response to your message to somebody else in this thread, I also updated my DVD writer to the latest drivers from the LG site. Note that both the Dell computer and the external (USB) LG DVD burner are less than 6 months old, and now have the latest drivers. Given that fact, and also the fact that ripping and listening to CDs worked to perfection with iTunes 4.8 but have simply not worked at all since upgrading to 4.9, I don't think we'd be going out on a scientific limb to suggest that the problem lies with iTunes 4.9 for Windows. The fact that this thread has become one of the more popular ones in this subject for people with the same issue would support that assertion as would the fact that all other programs on my PC that require interaction with the DVD burner work fine -- such as Nero. Could you please advise the group as to whether you've notified Apple about the problem, and whether it will be fixed in the next version of iTunes? It would be a bonus if you could also tell us when 5.0 (4.91?) will be released. In the meantime, I'll continue to use my trusty Nero to rip my CDs with iTunes relegated to the roll of a juke box only. I'll have to admit I sure miss Apple lossless for my classical music!
Thanks again for your help -- I still remain a loyal fan of iTunes!

Hello,
same problem as many others on this post I'm afraid. ITunes was importing songs from CDs fine until I took a recent upgrade - this was to ITunes 4.9. I now only get 15 seconds of each song from a CD no matter how long the track actually lasts. Haven't had a problem with ITunes skipping tracks though.

Did Run CD Diagnostics with the following results:

toonz,

Since no one else is reporting any success I guess I'll be the first. After spending some time looking over system information for my computer I noticed that during the 4.8 iTunes installation I had installed a USB 2.0 PCI card in my system to make the sync with my new iPod a bit more tolerable. There were no problems with that installation and I naturally forgot about it when this issue cropped up. What I found was the driver for the USB 2.0 card was colliding with the iTunes applications and several others and oddly enough this happened after the upgrade. Since I don't know what files are installed/upgraded with the 4.9 installer I can't obviously be sure at this point however.

The good thing is that my iTunes 4.9 installation is now working flawlessly. I have successfully imported several CD's without problems and all my songs which exhibited only about 3 seconds of music are now playing full length. And I just sent all the newly imported music to my iPod with complete success.

Thanks for your help. I realize it didn't fix my problem directly but it did set me down a different path.

Thanks again.
Brad...

Hello,

toonz or anybody else, got any bright ideas? | got so fed up with not being able to import any songs (I've had the problem for a few weeks before discovering this post) that I tried downloading ITunes 4.8 as suggested by skibum in an earlier msg. It wouldn't allow me to do this as I had a later version so,guess what, I de-installed ITunes 4.9. NOT a good idea if anyone else considers it as you lose your library!!
Fortunately, I have got nearly all the music on my iPod but haven't dared yet to try to upload that to iTunes for fear that I'll lose the lot!
Any advice on doing that?? I realise now I should have backed my library up but I didn't.

Oh, and the import problem has NOT been cured by downloading the earlier version. Am getting increasingly fed-up with the whole business.

David,

I'm beginning to have fears that there is some problem with iTunes and that specific model of drive. I've seen about 9 people now with the same drive with the same complaint. Let me see if I can get my hands on that model of CD drive and get back to you. Sometimes there's a workaround. Unfortunately, this is not a quick solution for you.

We could try new firmware. If you go to the MSI support site. It looks like you can download a utility that looks on-line for the latest firmware for MSI drives. Try that. You are running 150D as your firmware version and I know that there's at least a 161D version for that drive.

Let me know if that changes anything for you.

Jul 25, 2005 2:46 PM in response to david shuttleworth

No, it's probably not worth purchasing them if you can get them on-line. You could always download the driver updates and burn a backup so if you have to reinstall your system.

And while we're at it, I had one more thought to try. I don't think we're tried the check to make sure it's not a driver conflict.

Select the lower filter key, right click, select "rename". Rename the key to "_LowerFilters".

Select the upper filter key, right click, select "modify". Select the contents of the text edit box and save that string somewhere in a text file in Notepad or something. You need to save it so that when you're done, you can get the upper filters back to their original state. Then edit the text in the dialog to just say "GEARAspiWDM" followed by a carriage return, the carriage return is important.

Then reboot, and see what iTunes does.

To get back to your previous state, go back into regedit and rename the lower filters key back to "LowerFilters" and modify the upper filters back to the text string that you saved in Notepad. Reboot.

Jul 25, 2005 2:51 PM in response to Jordan Flanigen

Except then you're going to be stuck and never get to use any new iTunes features ever again because you haven't fixed the problem with this upgrade, so all other upgrades will also fail.

Jordan,

What is the model / manufacturer of your computer (or motherboard if it's a custom built machine)? We should check the manufacturer's site for driver updates.
