Rick,

The library format changed between 4.8 and 4.9. To get your old library back, look for a folder

My Documents\My Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries

In there should be a file call iTunes 4 Music Library.itl. With 4.8 iTunes installed, copy that file back to My Documents\My Music\iTunes, deleting the file that's there.

This will restore your old library pre-4.9 upgrade.

And as far as your import problems have you given me your CD diagnostics somewhere?

OK. After being frustrated by this (and getting very frustrated at the APPLE store - they treated me like the rube at the autoshop "Hey Jim, come here and take a look at this....never seen anything like it") I think I have an ALMOST satisfactory work around.

A) Use Real Player to rip the tracks. They will save into your "my music" file if you have windows set up in a pretty standard configuration.

B) You can then open that folder as you would any other folder and find the albums you have ripped with real player.

C) Open Itunes and "drag" them into the library icon.

D) You can then manipulate them into your ipod/playlists/etc.

For other opera geeks (should you be out there), a program named "Jfuse" SEEMS to work OK (and just OK) in getting rid of the "gaps" that exist between tracks on my favorite Puccini CDs. One bad one right before "Chi E La" but if I squint my eyes I guess it isn't THAT bad. Not sure that it wouldn't have been better to use the "Join CD tracks" that comes with Itunes but I can't get that to work using the method outlined above. If anyone else has other ideas on that subject post them/email me. I really liked the idea of Ipods to cut down on wear and tear in the car with my CD collection but right now it seems a device that will not work with most modern operatic/classical work (where the "gaps" just kill you)

Good to know I'm not alone in my frustration. I don;t get 15 seconds worth of anything - I get nothing. I can see the tracks but I just can't play thenm - it's alomst as though iTUNES is reading the header on the CD but fails to get to the actual tracks - it plays Zero of a second of each track.

I can burn a CD, but can't play it back !!

hi Rhys! (or RHYS? which do you prefer?)

there's an off-chance that you might have a simpler problem. even if i'm wrong, it won't waste much of your time to check up on it.

check to make sure that itunes is set to be your default media player. i've seen a thread in which similar symptoms to yours were resolved by doing this:

Dan G2, "Playing the music in iTines" #5, 08:27am Jul 26, 2005 CDT

(Dan G2 describes his symptoms in message 2 of the thread.)

b,
My levels of frustration, followed by anger then only to be envolped into warmth that I am not alone make me care little about the name by which I'm known 🙂

Rhys or any such name similar is fine as long as I get going once again 🙂

Thanks for your reply ...but it didn't work sorry - I did this in iTUNES and also after opening a CD and requesting iTUNES to be the default everytime...no luck 😟

Rhys

🙂 "then shall call you ... Rhys!"

drat (that it didn't work)!

"splitting your efforts" may be worthwhile. let toonz and all the other clever people attack the cd driver/drive issue
b here.
maybe also try heading back to that other thread and ask the clever chap (whose name i can't recall off the top of my head) what precisely he switched all his default settings to. then try mirroring his settings
b exactly
to see if that works for you.

(i'd tell you what
b my
settings were, but unfortunately they're a little ...
b unorthodox
... for several reasons, some of which are alluded to over in that other thread.)

David,

What version of firmware do you have now? There was this theory that the latest firmware was 220 and that the latest firmware would fix the problem. (You should see it on the line where it lists the drive letter and then the drive model information.) But it wouldn't be the first time a theory was wrong.

I found someone with the drive and I should be able to get my hands on one next week. I'll let you know what I find out.

EDIT:

Two things, 1 more time consuming than the other.

1. Try a different model of CD drive. If you go down to the local electronics store, make sure they have a generous return policy so that you can return it if it doesn't work with iTunes. Just get the $30 special CDR writer and see if that works. Like I said, I think it might have to do with the model / manufacturer of drive.

2. Roll back to service pack 1. To do this, go to Add or Remove Programs control panel and uninstall Service Pack 2. This will only work if you archived the previous system when you upgraded to service pack 2. Otherwise it won't be in the Add or Remove Programs list. See if iTunes works correctly and then reinstall service pack 2. Because you want Service Pack 2. But other theory is that this problem started with XP service pack 2 and it would be interesting to know that because it would help as a starting point to finding a solution.

I can understand if you don't want to do step 2. It's a pain in the rump and it takes about an hour to uninstall service pack 2 and then reinstall service pack 2, more if you have a dial up and have to download the service pack 2 upgrade again.

Hmmm, b noir,

See, Rhys is going to keep getting ignored by me until he posts the information about his hardware configuration. I ask everyone for this information and when they don't give it.... shrug

Ok, I'll try again.

Rhys,

I need more information about your hardware configuration. If you haven't already, go get iTunes 4.9 and install it. Run the iTunes Help menu -> Run CD Diagnostics... command and post the results here.

Also tell me what the model / manufacturer of your computer is or if it's a custom built machine. If it is a custom machine, what is the model / manufacturer of your motherboard?

OK....here is my CD diagnostic. And I did all the updating of drivers and firmware..

OK....very frustrated. Itunes (version 4.9) recognizes audio cds. Plays fine on windows audio player. But Itunes only will "import" the first 10-20 seconds of each track. VERY frustrating. Updated all the firmware. But again, windows audio worked just fine before updates (and after)

Here is the CD diagnostic

Thanks for that toonz - saved me a lot of frustration!

My diagnostics with iTunes 4.9 installed are in the message of mine immediately before the one you responded to. I noticed that the error codes are the same as several other people on this post are getting, i.e. 00000456 repeated many times.

I've just tried importing again with iTunes 4.8 (which previously worked fine for me) and I'm getting the same problem (i.e. 15 seconds per song). I've done Run CD diagnostics again and now get:
