Roll back to 4.9, problems, 5.0 is a disaster!

I foolisly cliked yes to the upgrade to 5.0. There are multiple problems with this and I dont know why Apple subjects us to them. I cannot waste time with it. The worst problem is with my Linksys wireless router, it now does not work. So no internet support, I am doing this from work! There are other problems too, just read this forum. I re-insatlled 4.9 off a disk but it wont open cause "library is made with newer version"
Please can some-one give me clear instuctions on how to fix this problem, so I can use 4.9 which worked fine with NO PROBLEMS. This is ridiculous. I think this solution must be here somewhere, but cant seem to find it!
Bottom line.....DONT upgrage, it not worth it at all!

I'm by no means a Microsoft fan, but I can't see how this can be anything but Apples problem. The Bonjour service is included with iTunes (by stealth). Then without alerting the user, it goes off and issues DNS addresses that are at odds with those that the router has issued. As far as I can see, MS Windows is not even involved in this mess. With Bonjour Apple is guilty of:

1) Including a service that is not described in the download
2) Not allowing the service to be configured/disabled or easily uninstalled.
3) Not thoroughly testing the software before release.

Help out an old man here: What does it mean to "run installers directly from a site"? How is it possible NOT to run an installer "directly from a site"? Can you provide an easy-to-understand tutorial on what we SHOULD be doing, step by step, to avoid whatever problems that the uneducated among us would otherwise bring upon ourselves?

Until then, I'll leave my version of 4.9 alone.

Many thanks.

CoffeeMan,

Never run an installer file directly from the site.

Download the complete file and save it to your PC. Either in the Desktop of a specific folder. I like to keep the downloaded installer file in nicely labeled folders in case I need to use them again. With iTunes and the iPod Updater software, it's good to have back issues if needed.

Once you download the file, close all running programs, as well as those TSR programs that appear in your System Tray: like virus scanners, firewalls, spy sweepers, popup blockers etc, etc, etc. This will wreck havoc with an installer's ability to successfully complete.

After installing one file, reboot, disable all the TSRs again and install the next file. Repeat until all programs are installed (in the case of several downloads).

Post back if you need more info,

Thanks. I think.

I can't recall a time when I downloaded a program when I was provided with an option to either "install from the site" or to save the file to my hard drive before installing. So I guess I'm still in the dark, but also pretty lucky, because the steps that you recommend are the steps I follow anyway (except for the nicely labeled folders and shutting down TSR programs; they've never hindered any installation I've ever attempted.)

I had to reformat after trying to install 5.ohno

-my machine rebooted itself halfway through install.tried again..same thing. then because prev ver was corrupt, I try to open anything to do with tunes and a reboot (bad pool header). Even the folder caused a reboot....not to mention I couldn't open prog uninstall....reboot. ARG! Format C: errr.

So now I am back to 4.7.....did anyone install the 4.9 off of that link???? and work???

I dl'd 5.0 at work and to be honest the new look is UGLY

Hi

I have just followed jamie's instructions and got as far as quicktime being reinstalled.(thanks jamie you are a superstar!) BUT i have followed the link to download 4.9 Itunes and i cant get to it. It seems to be unavailable. Is it the 10000's of Itunes users rolling back from 5.0?

This is a nightmare, you would think Apple would put some sort of warning on their site? Or at least mail everyone.

Hey Jamie,

That what I did. I think there is a way to re-install the songs with old playlists etc but I could not figure it out. So I just imported all my songs and made a new library in in a new but old v4.9 that works fine.
I have put aside my wirless router for now and will tackle that problem when Apple gets their act together. I did re-connect to my broad-band modem with a 75ft Ethernet cable as I said above.
Strange to see that people are still having problem AND Apple are still encouraging downloads of this fault ridden upgrade!

I followed the moderator's and others' advice and found that I DID INDEED have css-dvp.
I noted the version number (4.92.0.40416), contacted Freedom (my ISP's security virus firewall package)and awaited word. Freedom's upgrade came automatically and I was informed that the fix came through with updated virus definitions but I STILL have the css-dvp version 4.92.0.40416. So what's changed??? What does this all mean. Why did the issues raised in the moderator's post remain SO UNCLEAR after being "dealt with.
I still have no idea whether or not it is safe to proceed or what to proceed with. I'd really love to resume using my iPod iTunes combination and see my old albums BACK on iTunes. (I think they are still safe on the iPod untill/ unless
I plug it into the computer which would seem to be a foolish thing to do after all this. At least I know that it is ONE place where my albums actually exist and the songs still play in order)
Moderator's topic about css-dvp.sys file??? I have NO IDEA if its been resolved.
One of the "limited number"
