iPhone 3G Lag is intolerable! Video examples included.

We are a couple of swedish guys that have been talking about the Iphone 3G since we bought it and then we started to compare the old phone and the new and everyone had extreme problems in lag in the interface on the Iphone 3G compared to the 1st Gen Iphone. So we decided to make a video so people can really see and compare.

This lag that people are having is not the only problem but is followed by Applications crashing, OS is freezing, safari going haywire. touch not responding.

Also ive gotten info that upgraded 1st Gen Iphones that have updated to 2.0 is getting the same lag.

1st video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wE7HKFcQxoI
2nd video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DL7n9Vo7mJw&
3rd video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLoAWRU0mHE&NR=1
Anyone who can reproduce this?

So what is the consensus at the end of all this - should we be returning the phones or waiting for new firmware? My iPhone can get itself in such a state (slow, sticky, freezes, poor signal 3G/WiFi) the only way out is to power off/on.

The slowdowns are definitely software issues. Here's one way to verify that the Contacts app initial lag is programmer error - select the "Contacts" tab in the Phone application and launch it while trying to scroll immediately after it opens - there should be no delay (if you see a delay, it's only the first time contacts are loading into memory, try it next time and there will be no delay). So both apps load the same information but one has a lag and the other one doesn't - it must be a the software (in that particular case).

Regarding the hardware - I had two dead pixels and the screen was acting a little bit weird, so I went to the Apple Store (Regent Str, London) and got it replaced in 5 minutes with no fuss. So if your hardware is acting weird, just book an appointment and the guys at the iPod Bar are gonna be happy to check your iPhone out.

Good observation, i can confirm that behaviour here too (phone versus contacts app). Do you have signal issues by any chance? Mine can go for ages without problems then suddenly it can't find a network, either 3G or WiFi - actually WiFi seems a little weak, it rarely finds the hotspots outdoors and often drops out the indoors (AEX).

First time Iphone user...finally out of my contract with old carrier so I got it, 16g white.
I bought this after owning the ipod touch and luving the interface...it was snappy. Lag definitely an issue....

I notice it most when unlocking the phone from sleep....it can be that it just takes an extra second to open the phone or sms app...it acts like I never touched the "button" for the app.
I have also seen the laggy typing once or twice in sms app. Just exited the app and went back in, lag was gone. Certainly feels like a memory/software issue.

Shazam

Pandora

I am on the last build of firmware from Itunes (had to restore since itunes tried to set up my iphone as my jailbroke Ipod, things got funny then).

In the end I think it depends on how you use your phone...what you are switching between all the time and what not. Firmware update should sort it out....it better.

They have 19 days and my phone goes back. I won't accept crappy performance from a $300 phone.

I couldn't agree more. This is totally unacceptable, Apple. I've waited a year for you to get the software/hardware debugged, now I'm not sure it was worth the wait. I've experienced the same lag with contacts (>3000, I know that's a lot), mail, and home screen. SMS Text is also very sluggish (5-8 seconds to pull up application). This stinks.

I agree with the amount og contacts not being indicative of the amount (if any) lag. I have about 100 contacts and suffer from the demon lag in both the SMS and contact sections. I have put the new build on and still see the issue.

Of note, I have remote, google, ebay and holdem apps installed. I notice the glitch quite often after I use the hold'em game.

I agree with others in that it seems that the program is not closing and that this makes it feel as though RAM is low.

I sure hope apple fixes this soon.
