slow response when typing

when typing on iPhone I tap the letters and they don't come up until after I tap several letters so I have to continually stop and wait for the letters to catch up. It's so slow it makes typing out email a waste. Now here is the odd thing that makes me wonder what could be causing this: I had an original iPhone, did it on that one; got the new iPhone 16g, does it on this one too. I can be on the edge, on my wifi, other's wifi. Is it a network thing ? It's weird and annoying.

I just spoke with an Apple Support Rep. since I have the same issues on my Gen 1 iphone (after upgrading to 2.0) and on the new 3G Iphone.

The rep thinks its a corrupt 2.0 update or possibly a corrupt hardware.
Strange that so many people had the same updates with a corrupt file. 🙂 nonetheless, its not an update that you do, rather a full RESTORE. But before you do this make sure you backup your photos and your contacts, as it will delete it. Yeah, I lost all most contacts on my iphone when I updated to 2.0, *****!

Do a full restore and not a restore from your backups.
Instructions are here >>> (Updated URL)

Will let you know if this worked or not.
Good luck!!!!

Hardly any. I may have about 15 contacts. And email is just starting to accumulate. The phone is very new -- a couple weeks. Seems a little early to be having that problem.

The typing speed seems to be on anything: text, email, safari (like when I responded to this post from my iPhone -- I had to give up and come to my computer).

And it's intermittent. It's not all the time.

The new iPhone firmware (2.0) that ships with every iPhone 3G unfortunately has several bugs that need fixing... And slow response is one of them. You will notice it when it tries to load contacts, email, and recognize typing.

The iPhone's multitasking shuts down unused Apps and processes once it detects they are not in use. Which can take hours until it decides that. When you start using different Apps again such as, checking email, using safari, playing music on iPod, etc. it starts the multitasking engine back up and it keeps an eye on those Apps and processes. Even if you hit the home button and think that they aren't running any more, they are. So you will notice the response time to several things are very slow. It WILL be fixed eventually. The first iPhone firmware wasn't perfected until version 1.1.4. It'll probably take them until 2.1.4 to perfect this one. Give it some time and it will be the best phone you'll ever own. 🙂 I promise!

In the mean time, try holding the home button for six seconds on an App that you want to close and you will stop the process in stead of waiting for the multitasker to stop it for you. Most likely this won't work, as it's a firmware issue that Apple has to patch.

By then it'll be time to update to the 50G iPhone LOL

I had the 1st-generation iPhone and loved it. Love this one too, but do NOT like this slow typing bug. It's VERY irritating and frustrating, especially because I'm a fast typer, so now I have to wait and wait.

At least I'm not alone because I saw another thread here where others are having the same problem.

Again, I'm not having a problem with slow Apps, checking email, using safari, playing music on iPod, etc., where it is slow is "when I type anything". I type, letters don't appear until after I hit about 8 letters, and then the letters start to show up, but I have to wait until they do. I'd say it's about a second per letter, maybe longer. In fact, it's SO SLOW that I don't send email or text messages anymore from my iPhone. It's just to irritating to wait so long for the message to be final, that I figure it's not that important and I can just wait until I get back to my computer.

So until they clear up that issue, I just won't email or text much. Oddly, it's intermittent. Doesn't just happen every time I text or email, but when it does, it doesn't clear up by just shutting things down and starting over.

I am also having this problem. I searched google and discovered this thread. I have the 8 gb iPhone, I guess that is 1st generation? This slow typing happens mostly in SMS, it happens in email too, or anywhere that I would need to use the keyboard. I have found that the only way I can resolve this is to reboot the iPhone. Hold down the power button on top for a few seconds till it turns off then turn it back on and it works normally. I keep looking for an iphone update from apple, but have not seen anything yet that fixes this problem. BTW, it just started happening after the 2.0 software update. I didn't have this issue prior to the update.

To everyone suffering from the slow typing issue,

I had the same issue when I first got my iphone when it came pre-loaded with the iPhone 2.0 (5A345) firmware. Once I've updated to iPhone 2.0 (5A347) the slow typing issue has gone and is more responsive and the auto-correct function are returning closer word alternatives than before. Have a go at updating your firmware to see if it fixes the issue.

Well, it's not an APP, like the ones you download now. It is the email and text messaging that is within Apple's iPhone standard services.

I can close out, or delete, but I still get the problem. Again, it's intermittent at least, but it is annoying when it happens.

On my 8G (first-gen) it was continual. That was awful! At least it's somewhat improved on the 16G.

That's great someone put up a video showing the problem. Yup, that's what it does! Lags behind to where you're just waiting for the letters to type.

Exactly it!

My iTunes does not say that there is an update. Where are you getting the update already? I doubt that Apple, however, has fixed this problem already, although they did have clear from the 2.0 update. Mine started then with the first-generation iphone. I was hoping to rid myself of that issue with the new 16G, but nope....still an issue.

Someone else posted that the update only addressed some security issues. I could not find anywhere that layed out exactly what this fixed.
To get the update, you will have to open iTunes with your phone attached and then go to the Summary page and click the "Check for Updates" button. Otherwise you will have to wait for it to check on its regular schedule.
