A painful restore fixed it for me - at least initially. After the restore I was able to successfully download and instal the carrier update without an error message. The only problem is that my newly unlocked iPhone no longer works with my wife's SIM so is, presumably, locked again! I'm on Optus, in Australia.
To make matters worse, upon my next sync the carrier error message came again.
I got the same error too after updated to 2.0.1. iPhone is no longer United States only product, Apple should really have a more "global" assurance test before rolling out their software.
However, today my sister got a Brand New 8GB iPhone3G, when i helped her update to the new firmware right after she picked up the phone. The NEW Carrier was FINE for her.
Since we are both with the same Telecom company and using the SAME computer to do this, i have no clue why her's work and my dont.
I also tried restoring the phone but it only worked BEFORE i restore the backup image, after the backup image restore completed this 0xE8000001 error for Carrier setting appears again.
Okay, i tried everything and as a last option to do a total restore without using a previous backup. But the error ist still here. So we better be patient, it seams that this has nothing to do with the data on the phone. *Other threads on other forums said a total restore should solve the issue - for me it did not!*
-> People who upgraded iPhone OS (including me) have this issue.
-> I remember having had this option (install updated carrier settings) once in the past, it worked.
-> So after the update to OS 2.0.1 the Carrier update appears again.
-> Someone earlier in this thread mentions that this carrier update is the SAME as an earlier installed carrier update.
-> People who RESTORE their devices seem to be able to apply the carrier update.
My thoughts (I cannot confirm, just thoughts):
-> It looks like there is ONE version of the carrier update for most telcos right now (see above).
-> You take a NEW or a RESTORED iPhone (=no carrier update installed)
--> applying the carrier update works.
-> You install the carrier update and THEN apply the OS update to 2.0.1
--> now, the already installed carrier update shows up again.
--> iTunes tries to install it, but it's already there -> Error (0xE8000001)
I may be wrong, but I won't worry about this error for now.
The thing about it being the dock's fault is classy 🙂
even though the server settings was fine for my sister the first time after updating her firmware, when she just tried to sync contact info and music to her new phone, the "New Carrier Setting" reappeared and this time its Error for her also
The carrier settings only update the APN settings in your iPhone.
There is no need to accept that, actually you are better off cancelling and putting them in manually as otherwise you won't be able to change them which can be very useful when you want intentionally to prevent the phone to connect to 3G/EDGE
