iTunes 8.0 gathers data about my music library well enough and sends it to Apple too; but then 10-15 seconds into "processing" by Apple, iTunes stops and reports that "Genius results can't be updated right now. An unknown error occurred (4010)." I thought it might be overloaded servers and tried several more times in the hope of squeezing my request in between those of everyone else; but that didn't work; plus if it were a server issue I'd expect to see postings here from others with the same problems, and I'm not.
John,
You are not alone. Same problem here as well. I am wondering if 29GB of library has anything to do with it, or is it just 500K people hitting the servers as well. I have fond memories of the old days when there were less mac users... 😉
My real library (47 GB of music) will not work with Genius. And I don't know how to portion off just a little, like people seem to be doing. I have tried nearly 30 times over the last 24 hours to no avail.
Creating a library under another user (granted, I only used 4 songs) works perfectly. But it does not fix my real library at all.
I've quit, restarted the computer, repaired permissions, made new accounts, all with no success. Please, someone find a solution.
Just to update: I found a file called iTunes Library Genius.itdb. Deleting it made the analyzing process slow down just a little bit, but did nothing to remedy the 4010 problem.
Perhaps that will eliminate a troubleshooting step for someone.
Yeah, I've been getting the same 4010 error, even trying over one comp restart and a few iTunes restarts. Right now I'm rebuilding the Genius.itdb file, trying to get it to work.
I've been having this same problem at home on my real library, but didn't have the problem at all at work (where I tried it first). One thing I notice is that a lot of people are reporting success on one computer (i.e. a tiny library at work) but not on their real library at home - I wonder if maybe the Genius servers are getting confused by having multiple profiles associated with a single Apple ID?
I am getting the 4010 error too. I have a 30gb music collection, am running iTunes 8 on a Mac Pro with leopard 10.5.4. I have tried restarting and am still getting the error. I notice that even after a restart it doesn't create a new file to send apple, so maybe there is a way to delete that file and gather the data again ?
I have been trying since yesterday and kept getting the error message.
When I tried again, today, I to Stage #3 before getting the error -- tried again and it finally completed the process.
I have about 126 gigs on music.
I did nothing to my setting as based on this thread, I assumed it is some server problem at Apple -- maybe lots of people accessing the server at the same time.
Since there really isn't any glitch, I would just keep trying until you make it through.
ARGH! I've tried at bunches of times during the day - it looks like it might just be a server downtime, but mine still won't work. It sends the info to Apple, then waits. And it only waits for about 35 seconds or so before it quits. Hm.
I'm having the same issue with "Sending Information to Apple". I let it sit for about 30 minutes before deciding that Apple would never make something where you have to let something sit for about 30 minutes.
Most likely, I am the least tech savvy person in this forum, so if anyone has figured out a way past this problem I would be eternally grateful for your help. Until then, I will continue to think Genius only reads at an 11th grade level.
Same problem here.. been trying for the past three days, multiple times a day at different times. Sending the info to Apple takes a while and after about 20 seconds the error pops up.
