Well, I for one am very happy with the 2.1 update. AT&T provides me with weak 3g coverage at my home even before the 2.01 update. While my 3G coverage from ATT is not any better, the iPhone does a much better job of hanging on to the signal than 2.02 did. I no longer drop calls when I am sitting in my living room. Battery life seems better to. Usually after 8 hours of use i am down a 1/4, it is still showing a full charge.
That's because they "improved the accuracy of the signal strength display".... :-\
In other words, totally cosmetic "fix" for signal strength... I have the same signal strength as you -97 -> -101... On my 2.1 it says 5 bars, on my fiancee's 2.0.2, it says 2-3 bars. Go Apple.
Yesterday I installed 2.1 on my iPhone 3G. All of my issues regaring 3G reception, dropped phone calls, app crashes etc. are gone. Now I have the same reception as of all other phones in my family.
Looks & feels stable and faster !
Very good job Apple !

So far, totally satisfied. I now have 3 bars on 3g in areas where I had no 3g coverage. Phone seems more responsive, and the earpiece volume is now louder.
Too soon to tell if battery life is better, but now that I can leave the phone on 3g instead of edge, I suspect that battery life will not be that much better than before, running on Edge.
I updated last night with no problems.
Every thing seems to be working nicely. Lag has greatly improved. Although I don't think my 3G signal strength is any stronger I don think it holds onto 3G for longer before dropping down to Edge or GPRS.
I like some of the small GUI updates that I have noticed. All in all very good.
Still missing some obvious features such as MMS and decent bluetooth but that's a whole different issue.
Man, I wish that I could say I was happy with 2.1. So far I can't even get my phone to appear in Itunes 8 (yes, I've tried a million different combinations of powering on/off, reseting, disabling, uninstalling, etc) on Vista. I did install it from XP so I do have 2.1 but the XP machine isn't my daily user so I can't comment on things like App sync speed. So far though in the little use I've had since updating to 2.1 last night, the 3G reception has maybe improved slightly.
I updated to 2.1 around 12 am last night on Itunes 8 XP after fooling around trying to get my Iphone to appear on Itunes 8 Vista for 3 or 4 hours with no success. I had 3G disabled, then enabled it right after a successful 2.1 update. I had 3 bars on 3G for 20 minutes until I went into my room and it went over to a full Edge signal. I was playing around on the phone for about 45 minutes in bed and the full Edge signal remained. When I woke up this morning, I was still on Edge for about 3 hours until I turned off 3G and immediately turned it back on. I've consistently now had a 3 bar 3D signal for about 45 minutes. My whole point is that pre 2.1 I was getting a 1 bar 3G signal that would bounce around a lot maybe up to 3 or 4 bars but then back down to 1 or 2 all day when in my house. 2.1 seems to be a steady 3 bars so I guess from the little time I've been using 2.1 that it's helping at least to some extent on the 3G reception (I have 4 bars now as I'm writing this which is definitely not the norm from over the last month since I've owned my iphone....back to 3). Hopefully Apple can figure out why I can't get Iphone 3G to appear in Itunes 8 on Vista although that might be a big job considering Vista ***** so badly!
Same experience here. I just updated and then got a call. Usually, any walking around in my apartment would drop the call. This time it stayed on and had good quality. It could of course have been due to the call I placed with AT&T a few weeks back, but I'm willing to hand this one to Apple.
I'm very happy with this update as well. Granted, my contact list is no where near as large as some, but it still did hang up for a few seconds. Now everything's nice and speedy. Going back and forth between mail/contacts/notes/safari is definitely quicker. Good job, now let's get flash working in Safari.
Not only has 2.1 been ok for me in the UK since yesterday morning, but I noticed that picking up visual voicemail worked through my Bluetooth car kit. Before, I could only listen through the earpiece or speaker, BT was not an option. Am I being dense or is this really new since 2.1? Either way, I'm not complaining!
