Disable coverflow on iPod

Is there a way to disable coverflow? I just don't like the iPod changing interfaces on me when its being moved.

MacBook Pro 2.16GHz, Mac OS X (10.5.2)

I'll be honest, I've never thought a Zune would be such a good option until I had to use this device while jogging and ran into the issue. Too bad its not Mac compatible. But honestly, if anyone asks me what to get if they use Windows, I'd tell them a Zune instead of a 4G Nano.

I have just enough DRMed iTMS music to make jumping ship a pain. But I've learned my lesson and stopped buying DRM music. Eventually the DRM stuff won't be worth the hassle, and I won't care if I can't load it to a future Sansa or some other device. I'm just hoping that Apple will do the right thing this time, but next time they do some braindead UI error like this its going back to the store next day and I'll eat Apple's restocking fee.

Coverflow's neat for hipsters that want to show others what cool music they have for bragging rights, but its useless as a method of music organization. When you have a large collection, it makes sense to resort to ratings or genres or custom playlists (even better a smart playlist that uses all three). Just giving me a visual display of hundreds if not thousands of albums is like placing all your CDs on a table and picking one. And to deal with it while running...

Coverflow is a MAJOR annoyance on this thing, which otherwise I love. It makes no sense, you can shut of shake-to-shuffle, which is very hard to trigger inadvertently, whereas coverflow is popping on in every situation I use the thing. In the car, pops on setting it on the dash, in the pocket, pops on randomly and prevents me from changing the volume, and in the hand, pops on when changing position (say, to recline back in a chair).

It's a somewhat useful feature to have at all, but rarely one I'd use to actually pick an album.

If they wanted to improve that, how about letting me SEARCH FOR AN ARTIST as well as song title. I want all songs with "Tiff Lacey", but half come up b/c some have it in the title, and some in the artist. Goes along with that browsing compilations, artist name isn't displayed. Argh. Can fix that with a playlist composed on the computer, generally. Very small issue compared to the constant, unrelenting, activation of a rarely useful feature that disables a major control (volume). Blessed be that play/pause still functions.

I bought this iPod because my 1G had given up on me.
I had my 1G with the lanyard headphones, and I really miss them!

Now I must put the iPod in my jacket. I put it with the cord upwards. If the iPod gets tilted in ANY way, the cover flow kicks in. To get rid of coverflow, I have to take the nano out of my pocket, turn it upside down (the "right side up") and then carefully put it back again.

Apple should at least know that alot of people put the nano with the cord up, and the accelarometor (spelling? I'm from sweden :p) should also get rid of coverflow when it's upside down.

I miss my lanyards!

totally agree. it's just about the worst implementation of an Apple feature I've seen so far (okay, let me say, I'm no Apple user "from the beginning").
I wrote a feeback using the form mentioned above, hopefully I didn't make to much grammar faults or typos, so they will understand me 😉

Come on, we'll hopefully gonna force Apple to change this 😀

Viele Grüße!

This is my own fault, but it's just another example of why there should be an option to disable this thing.

I was driving today and I had the volume turned up so I could hear my classical music. I forgot to take shuffle off and the next track was death metal, which is, needless to say, much louder, so I fumbled around with the nano after realizing it had gone into coverflow only to narrowly avoid a high speed collision.

I mean, cellphone use while driving is already banned in New York, is the nano next? I should be able to set it down and adjust the volume without hassle.

Just went for a jog. Within the first minute coverflow kicked in without me realising it. After flailing my arms around like a windmill to try and turn it off (so I could increase the volume) I had to stop and take off my armband and turn it around.

It then happened again two minutes later when I tried to adjust a track. I stopped and turned it around again.

Then it happened again.

I will returning this useless device tomorrow.

Thanks Apple, nice one,

Steve B

My 4G Nano's firmware is 1.0.2, and there's no option to disable Coverflow in the menu. Yesterday they updated iTunes to 8.0.1, and I pulled that in this morning, but most of the fixes for iTunes seem to be Genius related. Nothing to do with Coverflow for the Nano.

Steve B's post below is exactly what's wrong with the Nano. I hope Apple does the right thing and gives users the option to turn it off.
