Are they going to make this adapter? I know some TVs coming out do not have VGA or DVI, only HDMI now, so is apple going to make this adapter or will we need to buy the displayport adapter to DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapter as well?
I decided I wanted this monoprice adaptor as lack of TV connection is the only step back compared to my 5 year old Ti Powerbook - $13 seemed reasonable (although, like others I would have preferred a "proper" HDMI port with sound in the lap top in the first place).
Monoprice want $31 to post to the UK! I know it's a long way, but have posted similar size items in the past for a fraction of this - does anyone know a UK stockist of a similar adaptor?
Alternatively, will the Mini Display Port to VGA adaptor from the apple store be satisfactory way to connect MacBook to 42" Panasonic plasma TV?
You'll get a much better picture with the Mini DVI > DVI Apple supplied adaptor + DVI to HDMI Maplin adaptor (costs a few quid)
You'll still need to route audio through the Audio Out connection from your Mac.
If your 42" Panasonic is the Freesat model (like mine) then make sure you route the HDMI through HDMI 1 - if you do it through HDMI 2 then you won't get the audio...
...APPLE - you are making us all suffer the pain or work arounds and fixes (as yet o be defined) by doggedly going after a proprietory (albeit based on universal standards) format here.. I can see the (commercial) sense - kinda - in limiting HDMI to Apple TV, but to limit HDMI to a 'hobby product' is just stoopid... at least get your MiniDisplay Port to support audio. Cutting one's nose of to spite one's face...?

I don't think so. DVI would bottleneck HDMI. The closest non-HDMI interface to HDMI is DisplayPort. Monoprice's Mini-DP to HDMI adapter is also at a more than sufficient quality. It's HDMI 1.3b and Category 2 rated. You can trust an HDMI cable will do everything its high end counterpart can as long as it's Category 2.
Thanks for the replies guys. Since I posted I have found a UK company that is now doing a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI for £20 Inc postage so have ordered one.
Once it arrives I'll let everyone know how it works and, if good, post a link.
Sadly, I cannot find the Overscan check box in the Display settings. The menu bar is missing and the bottom portion of the dock with the blue light indicators aren't showing up. I don't want to stretch my TV's settings, because I'll have to correct them again whenever I'm doing something else (I have a Toshiba 50" DLP, 50HM66).
Looking back at all these posts, it is perplexing to me, that a thread of this size, and yet Apple has yet to offer a solution up to allow audio and video to be output through mini display port. Unbelievable from a company that prides itself on user experience and simple design. Nothing simple or sexy about both a miniDP to HDMI (or DVI/VGA) adapter PLUS a miniTOSLink adapter PLUS an optical cable sticking out of my Mac. What is wrong with you Apple? Are you ignorant to the issue at hand here or just deaf? Notebooks have had a more elegant solution for probably 2 years now... and and this crippled down, obscure standard is all that can be mustered?

Eloquently stated. And I'm not referring to Apple's response, that's just a plain old Hadouken to us.
Even though your response states in response to OP, you do realize he posted that question in October right? Everyone in this thread probably knows there's a 3rd party adapter now for HDMI. The new question is why is audio on it crippled; more so, why is Apple keeping everyone in the dark on this problem.
I've read through this entire thread and I get that I need the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter to connect my new MacBook Pro to my Sharp Aquos tv, but could somebody please tell me exactly which cord to buy for the audio?
I've looked at the miniTOSLink cables on monoprice, but the acronym alphabet soup just makes me cross-eyed. And do I also need an optical cable or something? I'm not an audiophile and I don't have (and don't want) a stereo or anything hooked up to my TV, I just want the bare minimum required to watch hulu on my tv and hear the audio from my computer through the TV's built in speakers.
And I second, third, and fourth the call for a more elegant solution. It didn't even occur to me to ask about this when I bought my MBP. I figured that computer -> tv display was 100% solved by now and I assumed that I was the only one in the world who hadn't managed to buy the dead simple cable I was sure existed.
Anyway, could someone please take pity on me and just give me a link to EXACTLY what I should buy? Thanks!
Here's my dilemma...
I connected my unibody macbook pro 15" to a Vizio 32" 1080P LCD with an apple mini displayport to DVI dongle, then a DVI to HDMI cable. At first I got the no signal message, but after some tweaking and fidgeting I was able to get a picture on the vizio but it was flickering and had red "static" flickering throughout the picture. I'm not sure what resolution got it to work. It was goofing up so I kept changing settings and I lost it and couldn't get the picture back. The computer sees the Vizio, but there's something wrong with the connection.
Actually since you will only be using your Sharp Aquos (like me) and not a receiver, you will not need Optical since the majority of TVs (inc. my Aquos) have a TOSLink (Optical) only for output, not input.
