Automatic rotate/orientation now broken?

It appears to me (on two computers) that installing the recent Apple Camera Raw 2.3 (or another recent Apple update) has caused Aperture to no longer properly perform the automatic rotation of portrait oriented photos. Is anyone else having this experience?

For both my Nikon D700 and D300, when importing portrait oriented photos they are no longer being automatically rotated. Additionally, the imported image metadata is being set correctly and manually rotating a portrait photo (that is appearing sideways, i.e., landscape, but with metadata saying "portrait") changes the orientation but also changes the metadata to say "landscape".

This appears to be the case only when importing directly from the memory card (via a card reader). If I copy the photos to the hard drive first and then import them, it seems to work fine.

Is anyone else experiencing this bug? Can you pinpoint it to the recent Camera Raw 2.3 update? Is Apple aware of the issue?

Had the same phenomenon with Sony A700 over the weekend. Auto rotate had been working for months (always from card reader, direct to Aperture), then along came RAW 2.3 (btw, I had issues with 2.2 as well) and no workie.

Just "downgraded" back to RAW 2.1 and works fine.

Link to RAW 2.2:

Once you download the above file of your choice, delete this following file from you HD:
System/Library/CoreServices/RawCamera.bundle

Now you can install 2.1 or 2.2 as needed to retrograde.

Hope this helps

Raw 2.3 auto-orientation with Nikon NEF files is clearly broken with Aperture 2.1.2; but not necessarily Mac OS 10.5.5.

The proof is fairly conclusive:

1. Orientation is correct for Adobe RAW (Opens fine in Photoshop CS3)
2. Orientation is correct for Capture NX (Opens fine in capture NX)
3. Orientation is fine when Viewing thumbnails in Finder
4. Orientation is fine when opening NEF file in Photomatix
5. Orientation is wrong when opening NEF file in Aperture. Metadata incorrectly reports orientation as landscape.

I said: Raw 2.3 is broken with NEF AND Aperture (it is).

I said: Thumbnails work (therefore NEF and OS X is NOT broken). It follows that preview and QuickView work (they do).

I just checked iPhoto: It works with JPG. Orientation FAILS with NEF files. Did you actually check or did you just assume it works?

The important thing: Apple must fix this serious problem now.
