Automatic rotate/orientation now broken?

It appears to me (on two computers) that installing the recent Apple Camera Raw 2.3 (or another recent Apple update) has caused Aperture to no longer properly perform the automatic rotation of portrait oriented photos. Is anyone else having this experience?

For both my Nikon D700 and D300, when importing portrait oriented photos they are no longer being automatically rotated. Additionally, the imported image metadata is being set correctly and manually rotating a portrait photo (that is appearing sideways, i.e., landscape, but with metadata saying "portrait") changes the orientation but also changes the metadata to say "landscape".

This appears to be the case only when importing directly from the memory card (via a card reader). If I copy the photos to the hard drive first and then import them, it seems to work fine.

Is anyone else experiencing this bug? Can you pinpoint it to the recent Camera Raw 2.3 update? Is Apple aware of the issue?

As I said, the proof was not complete. Contrary to your previous post, the failure ot auto-rotate is linked to the camera raw 2.3, not Aperture itself. This is why the auto-rotate also fails in iPhoto, as you observed.

I never said Aperture was at fault - please read the thread again. I simply said I initially saw the problem only in Aperture. I don't use iPhoto, so I subsequently checked it. You said there was no problem in iPhoto with CR 2.3 - please read the thread again. Do you still think this is true? My results are different than yours.

For everyone else: myself and others have fixed the NEF auto-orientation problem by removing CR 2.3 and reverting to CR 2.2. I have been working with images for the entire day without difficulty. Auto orientation now works properly with Aperture and iPhoto.

Craig,
I think we might be in "violent agreement" with each other! I was attempting to point out that the bogey was the cameraraw 2.3, and that this could be proven by seeing the same error in iPhoto and/or Preview when viewing NEFs. Apologies for any confusion.

Just by the way, the track record with cameraraw 2.2 and 2.3 isn't so good for Apple. Neither have been a particularly good update for Nikon users. So far we have:
2.2 - white balance errors, magenta and/or green colour casts, which appear to correlate to NEF files previously saved using ViewNX (more evidence required); and
2.3 - auto-rotate not working, bad white balance appearing to be isolated to the later model Nikons.

Calx

The bug is a pain for sure, but if you select the mal-rotated images together, one click on the rotation button and it is done. Or perhaps a couple of times.

It should not have been broken. Makes up nervous about upgrading in the future..what else will break!

The way I look at it is if the current version of RawCamera I'm using works fine and I haven't purchased a new camera there's no reason to update.

That's a reasonable plan. Unfortunately, there usually is a general reference in the fix list about "improved RAW processing". That's always attractive incentive.

I will now proceed like I do with QuickTime updates. No upgrades until I need them and always wait a week for users to do their real-world "beta testing".

OK - I talked to Apple about this, and it is the latest update that caused the problem. Two options to fix this.

1: Copy the files from the memory card to a folder (like on the desktop). When you view them in the finder, they will already be properly rotated. Then import the files from the hard drive to Aperture, and they should be fine.

2: Downgrade from digital camera raw 2.0.11 (10/31/08) to 2.0.6 (5/19/08)

Go to your boot drive /system/library/core services/RawCamera.bundle and drag this file to the trash. Download the older driver from the following link, and then install:

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawcompatibilityupdate21.htm l

reboot computer.

Remember not to update this again unless or until you know apple has fixed it. If you need the newer version to support your camera (like if the older version didn't work for you) then use method 1 from above.
