iTouch 2.2 software update problem

I just got an iTouch and it is running version 1.1.5 software. When I hook it up to my iTunes the program wants to update to 2.2, but when I try to do it the message says "There was a problem downloading the iPod software for the iPod "XXX". You do not have permission to access the requested resource." What do I do? Please help!

Wish I had an answwer for you. Instead, all I can say is you're in good company. I have a refurb Touch with OS 1.x with the same problem. Warning #1... if you have been trying over and over to install the 2.2 download, check your purchase history to make sure you didn't get charged more than once for it like I did. If so, from your purchase history page, there is a "report a problem" link on each line item where you can report problems. I picked my first purchase and reported this problem with installing it, then picked my second purchase and reported that I shouldn't have been charged for it. Warning #2... I couldn't find a way to get to my purchase history from inside of iTunes; luckily I stumbled upon a link somewhere in the Apple support pages that I clicked on and it took me there.

All these people having the same problem, myself included.

Look, anything you do is not going to work. There's no need to go to the Apple store and listen to their drones tell you what's wrong with your computer.

Apple's servers are overloaded at the moment, and have been for some time. Tried to update my Touch last night, started getting this error message. Got super ****** that I spent 10 bucks on something I cannot even use. Eventually the servers will come back online, but Apple really should have realized "Hey, we're selling these things my the thousands, if not millions. Maybe we should fortify our update servers." But hey, what do you expect from the company that botched the iPhone launch as well.

As you can tell, I'm bitter.

If the updates not available within 24 hours, I say we all call Apple and make their lives **** 🙂

Good day all

Well isn't that special? A known problem that is only documentation on the forum. At lest an error message that makes sense would have been in order but a good company would have put a notice on the Touch support page. Perhaps they did not know that Christmas was coming? You would think that a company such as Apple would be able to scale their servers better for a short term load. I could introduce them to VMware so they could bring up temp servers when needed and have a real business continuity plan.

I have been trying to upgrade my daughter's ipod touch since late yesterday afternoon. I too get a message re: a problem downloading adding "you do not have permission to access the requested resource". I talked to a Apple rep this morning. He explained to wait a bit as a lot of people were getting updates and that I should be able to get the download within a day or so. Hopefully I can access the download soon...very frustrating!!!

Didn't YOU know that and expect all the new iPod owners to slow things down?

That is not the way it works. It is their responsibility to have their servers working so that expensive piece of hardware I bought works. Putting the burden on the users is the root of what is wrong with consumer goods today. It is unacceptable that we pay so much for these devices but yet the manufacturer takes no responsibility for it working correctly.

It is called business continuity and is the standard my customers expect their servers to operate at. At the very least they could not have a misleading error message that implies the problem is at the users end when in reality Apples servers are down. This causes unnecessary research and maybe even making matters worse trying out fixes that are not the root cause.
