I finally got rid of this message by doing the following
1) uncheck podcast syncing
2) delete the folder 'podcasts' in my music directory (defined in iTunes settings) - NB physically delete the files.
3) resync with podcasts set to not sync
4) delete all the podcasts in iTunes
5) add my podcasts back again
6) set podcasts back to resync and sync

All works and finally the error message is gone.

I ran into this error after I renamed some of my voice memos from within my library on my computer. Deleting the voice memos that I changed (both in my library and on my device) fixed the problem. The names of the files that I changed never updated on the device, and my guess is this name mis-match caused the syncing problem. I left my other voice memos alone and haven't seen this bug since, so you shouldn't have to delete all you memos.
