iPhone 3gs 3.0.1 Apps Crash on startup

I upgraded my iPhone 3gs to the newest firmware 3.0.1 earlier this week. Everything seemed to go well until I tried to launch my USA Today app and it crashed. I tried a few more apps and they all crashed too. I figured no big deal I will just back up and restore the phone and things will be fine. I ran the restore and then I sync'd my apps back on and the problem is still the same. Native apps work fine like Safari and Stocks but all third party apps crash on start up. I poked around and everyones advice was to restore. If anyone has another suggestion short of going to the Genius Bar(can't make it there until atleast Saturday) I would appreciate it! Thanks in advance.

So this morning I brought my whole setup to work, complete with external media drive and everything to try and resolve this problem. Keep in mind that I've never had a problem with any iPhone OS update to this point, so I think it was update related although this thread hasn't expanded much like the other bugs do (icon issues, stereo BT, etc). Maybe we all have something in common, maybe a common App or maybe some music or whatever, who knows.

Anyway, I did a full restore back to factory defaults. Then I went in and sync'd everything again by simply checking everything I wanted to send over. I lost data on quite a few of my Apps (which is stupid - iTunes should also back up App data). In the end, this process worked for me. I also deauthorized and reauthorized as suggested here and did the single App uninstall/reinstall routine. We may never know what caused it because the Apple PR machine (blogs, etc) will keep it suppressed since they are on the "perkroll".

Same thing happened to me. Upgraded to the new 3.0.1 and none of my 3rd party apps worked at all. They would start then immediately shut down and go back to the home screen. The only thing that worked for me was to do a complete restore and then NOT revert to a backup. I basically had to identify my phone as a brand new one after the restore to factory settings, then sync to my iTunes as if I had never synced before. I didn't have to do each application individually. I just selected all the apps at once then did the sync. I lost some app data, but it was okay. At least all my apps work now and all my exchange data is restored. Pain in the butt though.

I had the same problem but with a little extra grief. None of my third party apps would open and I could not play my purchased music videos and movies. Some songs would not play on my 3GS either.

I tried all of the advice but still no joy. I emailed Apple and the tech was very nice but could not figure it out either. In the end I installed a backup from several days before I upgraded to 3.01 and that fixed everything. All of my app data is still present as well.

My iPhone is running 3.01 right now and is running perfectly. I have no clue what caused all of the problems.

Word of wisdom: I copy my Mobile Sync folder to another location once a week so I always have a good backup that I can restore later on.

I have tried all of the above to get my apps to work. After I deleted all apps from my phone & computer, I redownloaded them, along with some new ones. ALL NEW apps work, SOME old ones.

My custom ringtones had stopped ringing as well after the update. I just created some new ones, and ALL NEW ringtones work, my OLD custom still do not.

I'm thinking of buying the "Missing Sync" for iPhone/Mac by Marc Space. Anyone used it?? It syncs all Voicemail, texts, ect, that iTunes does not. That way, if Apple does not take any initiative to fix this, I will restore as a completely new iphone. If that will work that is

I'm having the same problems with apps crashing on startup after upgrading to 3.0.1. Nothing I've tried worked. Backed up, restored, downloaded one new app, deleted and downloaded an existing app, re-synced a million times, de-authed and re-authed, etc.

I did notice yesterday that the very first iTunes song I downloaded didn't play. This was years ago when iTunes first came out, and I've been through a few computers and hard drives since then. I suspect this issue is a bug related to authorizing/deauthorizing. I'm really disappointed in Apple as I love their stuff but they keep breaking me. I spent quite a bit of time today doing all this troubleshooting. I have a support case open and will call Apple as soon as they staff their lines again tomorrow.

Here's a thought. I have been using a jailbroken phone, but recently decided to go legit and activated it properly with Apple. Could it be that anything purchased from the iTunes store (music or iPhone application) won't work if it was purchased before the iPhone was activated?

I've sorted the problem (I hope) by deleting all the apps both from the phone and the computer, and 'repurchasing' them from the App Store. I believe Apple won't charge me for this (anyone confirm?) but I'll find out when my credit card bill arrives.

I've been having this problem for about a week now (ever since updating to 3.0.1) and it's driving me crazy. Each time it happens, I can fix it by going to the app store and redownloading any app, and then they all start working again. The problem is it only lasts for about a day and then all apps stop working again. Does anyone know a permanent solution to this?

I have the same problem. I tried everything in the forums until this, which worked for me:

- Uncheck all apps in iTunes and sync the iPhone
- De-authorize my computer in iTunes
- Restart computer & iPhone (hold down home + sleep buttons for 10 sec)
- Re-authorize my computer in iTunes
- Check all apps in iTunes and sync the iPhone

Good luck!!

(All the purchased songs that still have DRM on them (128 kbps) also won't play -- no fix for that yet.)

I've also had the same problem (crashing 3rd party apps, can't play songs bought before I got the iPhone 3GS, etc.)

Took it to the Genius bar last week and they purged the whole phone in the store. Before I reinstalled all the stuff off my computer (XP), I could download 3rd party apps and they worked fine. As soon as I resynced the iPhone to my computer, the problems started again.

Made another appointment at the Genius bar for today, and they replaced the phone for me on the spot (NEW, not a refurb.) Got home and synced the phone up, and it's working great---BUT it's still got the 3.0 firmware on it. Given that it works just fine, I really don't see the point in upgrading to 3.0.1 at this time since the Apple tech said that once I update the firmware, there's no way to roll it back to 3.0 if the 3.0.1 causes the problem again.

Anyway, just wanted to provide you all with how I resolved this. Good luck. I hope your apple store is as helpful as mine was, and you end up with a new phone too!

I'd certainly agree with that.

since the Apple tech said that once I update the firmware, there's no way to roll it back to 3.0 if the 3.0.1 causes the problem again.

But this is certainly untrue. I rolled mine back to 3.0, and the problem persisted.
