Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Hello Graham,

The link below takes you to the home page for the iRC5185. These are the drivers for the internal Canon board. If you scroll down the page you will see the PPD Installer v2.70. Download this and run the installer. This will copy the PPDs to the Mac and then you can add the printer using IP > HP Jetidirect-Socket. Then for the Print Using menu, type 5185 and this will short list to the 'Canon iR C5185'. Select this and you should now be able to print from Snow Leopard.

Note that if you have the imagePASS-H1 attached to the machine, a white metal box hanging on the back, then there is different information for this print controller. Please reply if you do have the H1.

Kerl,

Thank you so much for the link. I just upgraded from 10.5 to 10.6 and everything worked except my Canon printer (ImageClass MF4270) disappeared. I tried the leopard driver as well as the generic Canon printer package from Apple with no luck, then tried various other things again no luck. Spent the better part of the whole evening just one frustration after another.

I came across your post and the UFRII 2.0 you linked (as opposed to 1.8) was what did the trick. The printer works like a charm again under Snow Leopard. Cheers.

Hello, we have a Canon iRC5185 and followed Pahu's instructions. Downloaded v2.70 PPD, installed, ran the installer, chose HP Jetdirect socket, Print Using 'Canon iR C5185'. When we print it looks like it works, the print queue says printing and empties yet nothing prints. FYI, when we print from windows we do have to put an id/password in and the Mac never asks for that nor do I see an option to enter it. Any help is appreciated. Running MacBook Pro Snow Leopard.

I have a Canon 4370dn and it just will not work with snow leopard. I've downloaded the UFR II v2.0 and still can't get it to work. I have the printer over the network (but also tried it as a shared printer through a XP machine). I select a printer, go to "select more printers". I choose the Canon 4360-4390 UFRII LT part. Since I am over a network--it doesn't allow me to input an IP address (like I had to before). When I try to print, it says there is a "print error -50". Any suggestions?

Hello Michael,

The imagePASS is a white metal box that will be hanging on the back of the iRC3220. It will have two cables that connect between itself and the copier and one that connects to your network, probably via a socket on the wall.

The information you need to setup this model on 10.6 varies between whether you are using the internal Canon board or the external imagePASS print controller.

The Canon PPD's do not support Department ID printing. To print to an imageRUNNER using this feature you have to use a full Canon driver - the PPD only option is not supported.

So you have a couple of choices.

1. Enable a setting in the Department ID management section called Allow Unknown ID. This will still force you to use an ID to copy and print from the Windows computers, but will allow you to print from the Mac with just the PPD's without requiring an ID.

2. Install the Canon UFR2 v2.00 driver. I have found this to work on 10.6 and will let you print with Dept ID management enabled.

3. Wait until Canon releases a full PS driver so that you can print using Dept ID. Not sure how long you will have to wait however.

4. Go back to 10.5. It was probably working fine and for the minimal amount of function you are getting with 10.6 it is probably not worth all this hassle. As an administrator for a print production company I haven't allowed any use to update yet. None of our apps will take full advantage of the 64bits and there is not much else 10.6 offers.

Hi PAHU

I'm in the UK with SL 10.6.1 and Canon MP600R. I've updated drivers as per your earlier post but still cannot print wirelessly (via Netgear DGN2000 router). USB is no problem. If I print off the printers configuration it shows IP address as expected with Wireless LAN enabled and Signal strength 90%. As soon as I unplug the USB cable and re-power it says OFFLINE on the Mac. Where am I going wrong?

Thanks

For the imageRUNNER devices I haven't noticed any issue yet, except that not every model of Canon is supported.

The owners of the consumer products, such as the MF and LBP series, that use the UFR2 driver have reported issues with performing some finishing functions, such as two sided. This may be a legacy of using this driver which wasn't designed for 10.6. These people will probably have to wait until Canon releases an official version of the UFR2 driver, but at least this current v2.00 has given the early adopters of 10.6 a method of printing.

The offline message you are seeing is probably for the USB print queue. You will need to add another printer queue for the network printer. This printer will show its name followed by the printers MAC address in the Printers list.

To add the network printer, click to Add and select the default view. After 10 seconds the MP600R should appear with the Kind column showing canonijnetwork. Select this to add your network print queue.

With the v2.00 driver, you do not add the printer like you did previously with 10.5, that is you do not select More Printers > Canon IP (UFRII). For this driver, you select IP > LPD. You then enter the IP address of the MF4370 and a queue name of LP. Then in the print using menu, you can select Canon MF4300 series.
