Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

I am eternally grateful. You were 100% correct and following yr advice got it going wirelessly again. Also followed yr advice from earlier post and managed to get scanning operational via wireless as well

Boy, I could sure use a roadmap for this stuff. I'm very confused. Is there a FAQ or tutorial or flowchart somewhere?

First off, thanks to Pahu for helping so many people with his post of Sep 3 linking to the UFRII v2.00 driver at:

However, this raises many questions. What is a UFR driver and how do I know whether it's what I need? Why can't I find this driver on the Canon site? (Looking up my ImageRunner 3035 at Canon USA, the latest Mac OSX UFR driver they show is v1.80.) What is gdlp01.c-wss.com and how do I know I can trust a download from that site?

Secondly, I've seen only a bit of discussion about the Sep 11 release of a new set of Canon drivers through Apple:

I downloaded and installed these drivers but I get no joy - my iR3035 is not listed either in the printer installer nor on the Apple list of supported printers at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669

Again more questions: Are the Sep 11 Canon drivers from Apple only for consumer models, so Canon has still left high-end office customers in the lurch? Or is there a way to use the new drivers in some generic setting with unlisted ImageRunner printers? And why is Apple still releasing drivers as pieces of software which must be downloaded and installed by hand when supposedly one of the features of Snow Leopard is that it will fetch drivers as needed?

Thanks to anyone who can provide a little background on this mess.

Actually, I did find the 2.00 UFR2 drivers (at least for IR 5185) here:

PAHU, I have the an irc5185 and 5180 both running on the H1. What is the solution for osx10.6

We also have an ir7086 that is no longer working as well.

If the answer is in the preceding post I'll be glad to look their but didn't know where to start

Patchm00, thanks. The UFR-II v2.0 driver isn't on the iR3035 page at Canon Australia, either. Does that mean that it doesn't apply to the iR3035?

Interestingly, there are some differences between what Canon USA and Canon Australia do offer for the ir3035:

Canon Australia offers a "PPD installer v2.70" dated 4Sep09 which it says should work for Mac OSX 10.6, while Canon USA offers a later version number with an earlier date, "PPD v2.75" dated 4Jun09 and not stating what version of Mac OSX it's for.

What is a PPD and how do I know whether it's what I need? And is the UFR-II a dead end for the ir3035 or worth a try?

There is a box with phone lines plugged into it, however, the ethernet plugs directly into the iRC3220 printer.

I was able to get two different network imagerunner printers working by downloading the v2.0 UFR driver. Add the printer as described (LPD>the IP address) and select the "generic" Canon iR series UFR II (US) as the driver. The specific model for either aren't listed as part of UFR II 2.0 drivers - in my case iR 5070 and iRc 5870. (For the color one, there is a Canon iR C series UFR II (US) driver.

Not all the options are available - but two sided printing and stapling were (which I use the most) and I haven't had any problems since.

Hi patchm00. Yes, the procedure for adding the iRC5185 using the UFR2 v2.00 driver is mostly the same. The difference would be that you select 'Canon iR C5185 UFR II (UK)' in the Print Using menu.

Hello Prentiss Riddle,

Okay, you have a number of questions with your last two posts so I will attempt to answer them all here.

Regarding the UFR2 driver. Just about every current model of Canon imageRUNNER supports this driver, including your iR3035. Canon Australia has posted the v2.00 UFR2 driver for the iR3045, which is the bigger brother to the iR3035, but seem to have missed it for the iR3035, but I believe this is just a management thing and not a reference to the level of support. Certainly, looking through the readme file for the Canon UFR2 v2.00 driver, the iR3035 and iR3045 are listed as supported models, albeit you need to select 'Canon iR Series UFR II (UK)' in the Print Using menu. So I recommend you try using this driver to print to your iR3035.

PPD stands for PostScript Printer Description. It is file that contains information for the printer that describes various functions the printer supports. In order to use this PPD package your iR3035 would need to support PostScript and in Australia this was an option - not sure if this is the same in the USA. If you don't know if your iR3035 has the PostScript support, you would need to check the machine settings. On the iR3035, press Additional Functions > Printer Settings. Scroll through the pages, you are looking for an entry of PS. If you only see PCL and UFR2 then you don't have PostScript so you cannot use the PPD installer. Note that PPDs will work fine with 10.6 as no plugins or filters are required, which is the cause of problems with other drivers on 10.6.

The other items you raised...

The Apple driver update for Canon does not include the UFR2 driver. Most of the driver content is only for consumer inkjet devices, not business copier-based models.

The gdlp01.c-wss.com web site is Canon's global driver download server. All consumer drivers and now some business drivers are available from this site. Most Canon sites are redirecting you to this site for drivers downloads, rather than providing the driver via their own server.

hi, i just upgraded to a mac from pc and i've installed my printer drivers from work. its a samsung printer which is connected to the network and everything worked just find. I installed my printer drivers from home, its a canon mx850, it work via usb but i also have a pc that connects to the canon through the wireless network (D-link). my dillema is that printing from mac book pro to the canon via the wireless network does not work. is it because its not running through a air port extreme router? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone had any luck with the iR3320i ? I tried installing the new PPD's that are up on Australian Canon site but it made no difference. I still get an error

"The printer software was installed incorrectly. Please reinstall the printer’s software or contact the manufacturer for assistance."

I am using the old PostScript Printer Driver Installer v1.81. I downloaded that UFR II software described above the iR3320i is not listed.

I'm surprised to hear that you are getting this message by selecting the PPD. I have only seen this error with the EFI 'Fiery' print controllers that attach to some models of Canon imageRUNNER, your iR3320i not being one of them.

I ran a quick print test to our Canon iR5075 using the 3320 PPD and as I expected no message appeared. So I expect that you have selected the iR3320 that is for the PS driver v1.81 you mentioned, which shows 'iR3320 Canon PS' for the printer model. This driver will not work with 10.6. So I suggest you delete this print queue and add a new print queue, selecting IP > LPD for the protocol. Then, input the IP address for the iR3320i followed by a queue name of LP. For the Print Using menu, set the menu to 'Select Printer Software...' and in the search window that appears, type 3320. This will short list your available models. You need to select 'Canon iR2220/iR3320', not 'iR3320 CanonPS'.

With this model selected, are you able to print? If not, what happens?

Install the H1 driver for 10.5, which you can download from the H1 web page (type the IP address of the H1 into your web browser and select the Downloads tab). Then download an updater file from EFI and run this to repair permissions on one of the H1 plugins. I will have to get back to you with the URL to the EFI download...

We also have an ir7086 that is no longer working as well.

Does the iR7086 use the imagePASS-S2 or is it using the internal Canon printer board?

Thanks Michael. That would indicate that you are using the internal Canon printer board. In that case, you will have to install the Canon PPDs and then create an IP > LPD print queue. The issue then is that since you have Dept ID enabled - the function that is requiring you to enter an ID and password - you will not be able to print as the PPDs do not give you the ability to enter an ID/pwd. So, your best solution until a new Canon PS driver is released is to enable a setting under Dept ID called 'Allow Unknown ID'. This will let you print using the PPD but your print jobs will not be accountable.
