Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Hi Pahu,

I'm having trouble installing my Canon MF4320d. It was working fine in Leopard, after I downloaded the driver from the canon website. However, after installing Snow Leopard, I could no longer print. I tried adding a new printer, but could not find the right driver to use. I eventually could find the Canon MF4320-4350 UFRII LT (US) driver, but am unable to print as this dialogue box appears:

The printer is not supported, or the printer information is not acquired correctly. If the printer is supported, check the printer connection, delete the printer, add it again and acquire the printer information on the Print dialog box.: 10322

Please help! Thanks!

The UFRII driver for the 5185 installed and works (asks for userid/password as expected). Thanks again for your assistance.

I have been reading and following this forum discussion for quite some time now and after trying to apply some of the methods, I've decided to detail my problem:

I work in an office where there are 2 Canon Color Imagerunners. The main printer I need to print to is a Canon irC3220 with an Imagepass C1 Fiery controller. The secondary printer is a Canon ir5180 with an Imagepass H1 controller.

Our business uses job accounting (in 32 bit applications it appears as "Owner Information" with a box where I can type a 2 digit code).

Basically, if I want to print something (I've set up LPD printing successfully) I have to open files in any non-64 bit application. This is frustrating because I usually create in Photoshop and InDesign only to print PDF's out of Preview (which is now 64 bit).

Please help! I have run the EFI updater and everything. What is the deal with Canon and SL?

Yes I can print and without entering Dept id and password which is weird but OK! I can also get duplex to work. Outstanding -- thanks.

What you are experiencing is the current limitation the EFI drivers have on Snow Leopard. Because the plugins that provide you with the extended features are written in 32bit, they are not compatible with 64bit applications like Preview and TextEdit. When used they have a line through the middle of the plugin name and when selected, a message appears stating that the selected setting cannot be used because 'it doesn't contain a version for the current architecture'.

Therefore, until EFI releases a new 64bit compatible driver, it will be necessary to set any 64bit applications to open in 32bit mode in order to use the options, such as Job Accounting.

I've read through all 12 pages of this thread and feeling increasingly depressed that it appears there is no solution in sight. I am seriously considering moving back to 10.5.8.

I'm making this posting mainly to keep this thread active and noticed: it is very useful and worth reading.

I too am waiting on Canon: in my case for an ImageRunner printer driver for an IRC2880.

So far we have updated only one workstation out of 24 to SL, but will be updating the others during October. Our (temporary) solution will be to print via one Mac that we keep on Leopard. Interested to hear from anyone else who does this or something similar.

Also, has Canon posted an official timetable for SL driver release anywhere? My local Canon reseller (I in the UK) has told me 'early October' for ImageRunner drivers and that 'several other Mac-based businesses are unhappy'.

I was able to successfully set up our office's two Snow Leopard computers to print to our ImageRunner 2022i, via the UFR II driver and IPP.

Crap....

At our high school we print from ImageRunner 5570's. Now, using the UFR2 v2, I can install the generic "Canon iR Series UFR II (US)". Once I add this, I get an installable options page that I fill out (since we have job accounting at our school). Everything appears to be working well, and when i make a test page in word I can print the file with no trouble (after entering my job ID code)...

However, the imagerunner receives the file. Note's that I sent it, with my department ID, and that it is a 1 page word document... Then it beeps a few times, says error, and won't do print anything...

Any ideas what's going on here? The connection is obviously a-ok, so why will the printer not actually print anything for me?

Any help would make many teachers here very happy!

Hello James. Could you be more specific about the issue you have. There are a lot of problems listed in this posting so I am not sure which one you are referring to as having the same.

The version 2.00 of the UFR2 driver does not list the iR5570 as a supported model. In testing to a number of Canon imageRUNNER models, I found this driver did not work correctly with the xx70 series of b&w and colour copiers. The results varied but basically I wasn't able to print from 10.6.

Since you are using Dept ID management, you may be stuck. The workaround others have mentioned, whereby you share the printer driver from a 10.5 Mac, will not work with Dept ID enabled. And, since you are in a high school, the other workaround, where you change a setting in the Dept ID management called 'Allow Unknown ID', is probably not a good thing because if the students have access to print to the iR5570 then they will be able to pump the pages through without authenticating.

So, unless you can roll back to 10.5, then you may well be stuck in crap...
