Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

I was having trouble getting my Canon MP500 all-in-one printer setup in Snow Leopard, but finally figured out the issue. After downloading the driver from the Canon website and installing (and a quick restart), I couldn't get the printer to connect via bluetooth. I tried going to Bluetooth-->Set Up Bluetooth Device, but it kept timing out. After trying over and over, it finally got to the point where it sent the 0000 passkey, which worked, and the printer was finally paired. I tried printing something, but the printer was still not detected as a printer. I then went into Sys Prefs (Print&Fax) and added the printer there. The tricky thing is when you add a printer, keep it in the "Default" tab. Nothing appears for a couple minutes, but soon my bluetooth printer popped up. The only thing I had to do was click the "Add" button, and I can now print to my MP500 via Bluetooth!

You can download the MP500 driver ( here).

Pahu,

I did try the MP970 CUPS driver as soon as I realized printing was not working. , I installed PrinterDriver MP970series102600.pkg from the U.S. Canon site. I get the Bonjour Scanner to appear but the canoniijnetwork printer never shows up. I finally got it to work by reinstalling Canon MP970 series 693.pkg. Rebooting and then going into More Printers. There the printer shows up, installs fine and works.

Of course now Scanning via Bonjour is broken but I can deal with that.

Using iR C3170u. All worked well pre-SL (UFR II v 1.80). Can't use the printer at all post SL. UFR II 2.0 doesn't work. Haven't found anything that will. If anyone has any update or thoughts, I'm interested. I'm even interested in going back to 10.5 (is that possible?) - SL is not that significant. I would rather be able to function at the level I was used to.

I've never heard of this model with the u on the end. Any ideas what the U stands for?

The iRC3170 series sold in Australia had PostScript support as standard. If your model does have PostScript then you should be able to select Generic PostScript in the Print Using menu and print to the machine. To check, on the copier press Additional Functions > System Settings > Printer Settings and look through the menu screens. If you see PS then you have it.

Another thing to note with this model is that there is Fiery controller available. This will be a white metal box attached to the back of the copier with a couple of cables connecting to the printer. If it does have the Fiery (called an imagePASS G1) then you cannot use the UFR2 driver option, but you can use PostScript.

If your iRC3170 doesn't have support for PostScript, then within the UFRII v2.00 there is a Canon iR C UFR II option. This doesn't quote a particular model so it may work better for you than the 3080 I recommended.

How are you connecting to the printer? Is it via Ethernet or USB?

As for going back, you would have to format the drive and start again. If you are using Time Machine then you would be able to get most of your documents and applications back by selecting to restore from that drive during the 10.5 install. Personally I don't think it is worth that much trouble because I'm sure we can get this working for you.

Thanks PAHU. I really have no idea what the "u" is for (it is on the front of the machine). I did see it in the list of supported machines in the v 1.80.

I am trying to connect through Ethernet - both within the office and through a VPN outside the office - all the results are the same.

Generic Post Script did not go through. I am able to detect the printer, and the print job seems to go through (clears out of the print queue) but the printer registers an error when I try and send the document through. No description of the error is given - just "error." The printer does recognize that it is a Microsoft Word Document as well as the size, but will not print.

I tried using the UFR II iR C nondescript drive. I get a "Canon URF II Printer Driver An error occurred.: -50" on the mac. Same recorded error on the printer.

Thanks again for the help.

In testing the UFRII v2.00, I found I got the same 'error -50' when I had the network protocol set to HP Jetdirect-Socket, which the manual says you can select, it says only IPP is not supported. But I also remember that on 10.5, only LPD was used and you had to add the printer via More Printers > Canon IP (UFRII) - which is not available with 10.6. So I created the print queue again, this time selecting LPD and entering a queue name of LP, and selecting the nondescript UFRII entry and no more error.

If you are already using LPD for the queue, then the job disappearing could be due to Dept ID (Job Accounting) being enabled on the copier. This will certainly give you the same symptom, where your jobs leave the Mac but don't print at the copier. If you selected the job in the copiers System Monitor > Print > Print Log > Details, this often shows an error code at the top of this view. An error like #701 would indicate an incorrect Dept ID was used.

If you select to print a document on the Mac and change the print menu to one of the Canon menus, such as Special Features, and then click on the Printer Info button, a new window will appear and it would confirm if Dept ID aka Job Accounting was enabled.

I may be asking the same question as others but with just another model. Anyway, I have a Canon Pixma MP480 (free with MBP purchase). It is connected to my airport and shared. I am unable to scan to pc with this printer since sl update. I noticed Canon had new drivers for 10.6 so I downloaded and installed them. I got the following error message during the install, yet it finished the install and said install successful:
System extension cannot be used
The system extension"/System/Library/Extensions/CDSDAudioCaptureSupport.kext" was installed improperly and cannot be used. Please try reinstalling it, or contact the product's vendor for an update.
Is it because of sl or because it's connected to airport? I know I've of read of scanning not working over wireless but I do think it worked before update.
In Canon utilities there is a MP Navigator EX 2.0. There is a process to scan from that program, yet when I try, I get a message that says cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Scanner driver will be closed.
Any help will be appreciated.
I did notice that my Samsung printer/scanner is now recognized in preview and I can use that scanner from my MBP. It is connected to my MacMini and also shared.

Using LP in the Queue name did indeed get rid of the -50 error.

I do have job accounting on since all of our employees have to sign in to print. I verified the account and password. When looking at the detail of the log, no error, just "STOP." I even tried a few more accounts and passwords - none went through. They simply stick in the system as an error.

Thanks again,

Well it looks like Job Accounting works fine with the UFR2 v2.00 on Snow Leopard.

Looking through the Readme for the v2.00, your iR C3170 is not listed as a supported model, while it was listed as a supported model with the previous v1.80 UFR2 driver. So this may explain your current symptom.

And if the U on the end of the model number means that it is a UFR2 only model, then that would explain why you cannot use the Generic PS or PCL.

So I think you won't have a solution until Canon releases an official UFR2 driver for 10.6, which is due in November.

Just confirmed my thoughts about the models supported with this v2.00 UFR2 driver. A mate has an iR6570 in the office and he tried the v2.00 driver on his MBP. He had to select 'Canon iR Series UFR II (UK)' for the Print Using menu as his model wasn't listed. When he printed, the job left the Mac queue but on the copier a message was displayed on the Status bar "PDL UFR II Version Error". Looking at the Print status the message simply showed Error, the same as bcapranica is getting.

And if he changed the Print Using to another model of Canon, such as the iR5065, the job would error before leaving the Mac showing "The printer is not supported, or the printer information is not acquired correctly..."

Luckily his machine does have PostScript support, so he has installed the Canon PPDs and is printing fine.

I have the MX850 previously on a wired network. I just updated to snow leopard, and also lost printing capabilities. I tried all of the fancy solutions listed without success. I tried downloading the brand new drivers and network tools. Still no luck. Finally, I got out my old install CD. Put it in. Reinstalled the driver, MP Navigatior, and Network Tool. Finally the networked printer showed up after clicking the more printers button. I had to repeat the add printer/fax to add the scanner component. Printing works fine. I haven't tried the scanner yet.
