Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

JPdoc, have you looked to see whether you have the options when printing to the MX850? When I tried that, the printer showed up, but the options did not. I could not print duplex, for instance.

The new network, printing and scanning software does work as advertised. However, you do need to wait a while before they show up when you add the printer. You should have the printer with driver version 10.26.0, and the scanner should show up in the Print & Fax preference pane as well.

I am pleased that Canon has resolved issues with Snow Leopard so quickly.

My daughter just upgraded to SL. She has a Canon Pixmar 620 printer/scanner which worked perfectly with Leopard, even though it took hours on the phone to set it up wirelessly using an airport express. So, you can imagine her TOTAL meltdown when her printer did not work wirelessly, even though it is printing using the USB. She has a 3 month old iMAC and the printer came with it. Could some one explain STEP BY STEP instructions on how to set this thing up wirelessly, including any downloads from canon if we need any. Do you think it is better to just wait for the software update from apple? Thank you for any help in this matter

Word of warning. I don't have the Pixma I have the MP970. Also my daughter has been in melt down mode all day, but it has nothing to do with the printer. So, this fix may or may not work with your iMac / Pixmar / Daughter combo.

This is what I did to get her MacBook Air working with the Canon MP970. The printer refused to show up until I downloaded and installed the latest (09/01/2009) print driver from Canon.

Head on over to http://tinyurl.com/5dgnn3 to download the following print driver ( I looked for the Pixmar 620 for:
MP620 series CUPS Printer Driver Ver. 10.26.0.0 (Mac OS X 10.5/10.6)
mp620sosxcp102600ea8-2.dmg

Install it as usual by going to *System Preferences* and *Printer & Fax*
Add a printer by hitting the + sign.

If you are lucky the printer will show up. You might have to wait a few seconds but after a few seconds it should appear. If it does not, but the *More Printers...* button appears, click that and your printer should show up.
If it doesn't appear... then um... see below.
If it does appear, select your printer and you should be fine.

What to do if it does not appear after the driver install? That happened to me on my ole MacBook Pro C2D. I do not recommend this. I was desperate. Almost in melt down mode. Or at least .. go buy an Epson mode...

I installed the new Canon driver from the web site, but that didn't work. I then removed all signs of Canon from /Library/Printers. Then I installed the old Canon drivers and on top of that the new driver. That did not work, but when I did "Software Update", an update for Canon Printers appeared. That installed and now everything is working. Printer and Scanner. Again, this was only needed for the MacBook Pro C2D/ Canon / Me combination. The Air/ Canon/ Daughter accepted the Canon driver fine.

Good luck with your iMac / Canon / Daughter combo.

My network at work has an IR C5870U, which vanished when I installed SL. Trying to add it now, I can enter the IP and "select software", which gives me the C5870. (Not sure whether the U is significant.) Then when I try to print, I get an error message: "The printer software was installed incorrectly. Please reinstall the printer’s software or contact the manufacturer for assistance."

Here's the wildcard, though: If I select "Generic PostScript Printer," it prints just fine... on 11 x 17 paper. This also happens to a friend at work who's running OSX without SL.

Suggestions, anybody?

This worked for me with a canon ImageRunner 1023if. But instead of choosing "More Printers" and then the UFRII as usual (and which still did not work because my driver didn't appear as a selection), I just used the LPD printer setup screen, entered my printer IP address, and then manually selected the 1023 driver software. Once I did that, a dialog box popped up & asked for my printer installable options (2nd trays, duplex, etc). After that, I'm printing fine (using the UFR 2.0 from the links found in this list).

Thanks for the comments. Hope this helps someone else.

Your daughter's situation sounds a lot like ours: we bought a new iMac in the spring and purchased a Canon Pixma 620 printer/scanner along with it. And like yours, our setup worked perfectly with Leopard. Fortunately my setup was painless since I had my son do it (he works at our Apple Store!). But like you, after I upgraded to SL I could get the Canon working via USB, but NOT wirelessly. I spent much of last Saturday reinstalling, restarting, reconfiguring -- all to no avail. Last night I went to the Canon CANADA web site and found this quote: "The Printer, Multifunction and Scanner drivers included with Mac OS X Snow Leopard support USB connection only." Elsewhere, in relation to their CUPS driver (which is required for network printing) they say: "Printing using Bluetooth connection cannot be performed." So it was not me -- it was Canon! As a result, I'm afraid your daughter's quest, like mine, is--at least for now--futile. Will Canon update their drivers? That's anybody's guess, but based on a previous personal experience about 10 years with a Canon scanner that became orphaned when we first switched to OS X, I would say don't hold your breath. And what does Canon say? Again I quote their web site: "We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding." But no indication that they intend to do anything about it!

Printing via wireless is not the same as printing via Bluetooth. And if you read the information for the 10.26.0 driver, it actually says...

Mac OS X v10.6
1.There are some functional restrictions for printing via Bluetooth.
For details, please wait for our release information.

It only states that Bluetooth is not supported with 10.5 with the CUPS driver.

As one of the people who is printing wirelessly using the drivers provided by Canon, I believe your statements are incorrect and tainted by a previous experience, which can be misleading to others looking for a solution. The vendors can only do so much - unfortunately they have to rely on the user being able to correctly operate their computer...

Pahu -

You seem to really know your stuff, so maybe you can help me and many others yet again -

I downloaded and installed 10.26.0 tonight, and also uninstalled my mp620. I then re-installed the printer - nothing worked wirelessly. So I carried my printer over to my closet where I have an Airport Express plugged in, and connected the 620 to the AE. The printer was recognized immediately and printing was fine.

But now I want to put the printer back where it belongs, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to do that. The printer doesn't show up on my home network. When I go to the internet page I have set up for my home network (my router's IP address), I can see all of the devices that are connected to the network - my mac, my iphone, my wife's iphone, and my airport express. I have my printer turned on, I went into the wireless settings and activated the wireless LAN, but I don't see the printer anywhere, and of course I can't add it wirelessly since it's not even showing up on my network.

How do I get my home network, and then my mac, to see my MP620? I tried using the install disk that came with the 620, but as soon as I put it in, it says this OS isn't supported by the software on the disk.

What am I missing?

Since you had the MP connected to the AE, assuming it was via wireless, then you do need to power off/on to reconnect to the wireless network. This probably did occur if you had to unplug it and move it some distance, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

If you go to the printer and using the menu select Settings > Device Settings > LAN Settings > Wireless LAN setting list, this will show you the current IP address for the MP. There is a chance that it doesn't have an IP address, or it has an incorrect address, and that is why you cannot see the printer.

If the address is not the same subnet (usually the first three sets of digits) as your other devices, of if you simply want to go through the network setup again on the MP, then you can change the network settings by connecting to the USB port of the MP with your Mac.

With the printer connected via USB, open the USB printer queue and select Printer Setup. This will open the Canon IJ Printer Utility and show the MP connected via USB. Highlight it and then click Network Settings. This will open the Canon IJ Network Tool where you can select Setup to run through the network configuration. If the tool thinks the printer is already configured for your network, a new message window will appear stating that this is the case. Here you can select 'Use as is' or 'Reconfigure' and you can check the current settings by selecting Network Information.

Check that this is set correctly and reply if you need more help.

OK, unfortunately I'm still confused.

I had connected the MP to the AE using a USB cable, not wireless.

I unplugged the usb, hoping the printer would be picked up on my wireless network. That didn't happen, and that's when I posted my last question.

So here's what I've done since -

I went into the printer's wireless LAN settings list as you suggested. It said the connection was inactive (although I had tried to make it active in the Change Wireless/Wired screen, and selected Wireless LAN Active), and the ssid was BJNSETUP. Everything else was blank except for the mac address.

I plugged the USB back into the Airport Express. I can again see the printer, but only as a USB device, of course.

So what now? Do I have to actually connect the printer to the mac, or just the airport express? I've downloaded the wireless setup software from the Canon site. When the computer restarts, it first asks if I want to set up using LAN or USB. Even when I say LAN, nothing happens in terms of recognizing my printer. I feel like this is probably something simple that I'm just not getting.

Please assume I'm not that savvy in your reply - because I'm obviously not!

Thanks.

Yes. Connect the USB cable between the MP and the Mac. Don't connect to the Airport.

With the printer connected to the Mac via USB, you can then select it within the System Preferences > Print & Fax > Printer list. Then...

1. Click on Open Print Queue
2. With the printer queue displayed click on the Printer Setup icon
3. Now click the Utility tab
4. Now click the Open Printer Utility button. This will open the Canon IJ Printer Utility. With the top menu set to USB you should see the MP620. Highlight it by clicking on the name once.
5. Now click the Network Settings button. This will let you configure the network settings.
6. Once you have entered the network settings and the signal strength test completes, you need to power off the MP and then disconnect the USB cable. Now turn the power back on and wait a minute. Then go into the Wireless LAN settings list and check that you have an IP address for the printer. If you do, then you are ready to add the printer queue again.

If you need help from here then please reply.

You the man!! I'm printing wirelessly. Only difference is that the utility told me to disconnect the usb and move the printer to the location I'd be using before performing the signal strength test. So I did that, performed the test, then powered the MP off and back on. Printer now shows my SSID and all the right addresses.

Now some fine tuning -

In printers and faxes, I show three printers.

One says Canon MP620 series, with no location, with a yellow dot that says in use. I'm assuming I should delete this, but I'm not sure how.

The second says Canon MP620 series (mac address in parentheses), with no location, status has a green dot that says idle, default. This is the LAN printer that's being used.

Third says Canon MP620 series-1, the location is my iMac. Status has a yellow dot that says in use. Also, for this printer, there is a print and scan selector on the top of the box. When I click on scan, there is a button for Open Scanner..., and a scan button drop down box that says Open MP Navigator EX 2.0. I assume this will enable my scanning function to work, but I want it on the second printer that shows the mac address, correct?

So in short I guess my two remaining questions are: how do I set up the scan function on printer # 2, and how do I delete printers 1 and 3?

I can't thank you enough for your help.

Good to read you got it working.

Okay, re the unwanted printers. To delete a printer, simply select it in the list and press the - button directly under the list.

Now as you have determined, the 3rd printer was created from when you connected via USB. This view has both the printer and scanner tabs. If you are not planning on printing via USB for a while, then you can safely delete it.

The first printer could be a leftover from a previous attempt to add the network printer. But just check there is not the word Scanner above it. This would indicate it is your network scanner, which appears as a separate entry in the list, unlike the USB connection which has the printer and scanner under one entry. To be sure, if you look at the top of the list you will see Printers in gray text. Directly under that will be all the printers you have added. If you don't see the word Scanners in the same gray colour under all the Printers, then this will not be the network scanner and it is safe to delete.

Re adding the MP as a network scanner, now that you have it configured on the network, if you select to add a printer ( press + ) and select the Default icon, the MP should appear in this view with the words Bonjour scanner in the Kind column. Select this entry and click Add. That's it. You now have a network scanner.

To use the scanner, you will now see it in your Print & Fax list under the heading of Scanners. Select it and in the right pane click Open Scanner. This will do a preview of the document sitting on the glass. Select the portion of the document or image you want scanned by dragging your mouse from the one corner to the other and then click Scan to finish.

Good luck
