Canon Support for Snow Leopard

Canon has posted their support schedule for Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) for their consumer printers.

http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/8200620400.html

It looks like if your product is a few years old then it is not advisable to purchase 10.6, or be ready to buy a new printer.

As for their business products, such as the imageRUNNER series, none of the current Canon printer drivers work on 10.6. Having been involved with the 10.6 seed testing I found that while the drivers appear to install okay, the creation of a network printer queue fails. This occurred with the following drivers.

CUPS PS v2.11
PS v1.81
UFR2 v1.80
Fax v2.20

So if you feel the need to update, then beware.

If your Canon device supports PostScript, then you can use either the Generic PostScript included with 10.6 or install the Canon PPDs so that you get some finishing options.

If your Canon device only supports a Canon proprietary protocol, such as UFR2, CAPT or GARO, then there is currently no solution for them with Mac OS X 10.6.

Pahu,

Thanks for the advice regarding the pop-up "warning". I don't seem to have a Canon UFR II Helper application in the indicated directory; only two applications called UFR II BackGrounder and UFR II Printmonitor. Any other idea?

I will try creating new printer settings....that should work. Is the print quality affected by the Raster setting? (I'm not at work where the printer is located, so will have to wait until Monday).

Thanks as usual; you are a real wealth of info!

PAHU,

I followed your instructions looking for the configuration print but it was not there on my model. I found it under additional functions>report settings>user data list>print. I don't know if this is the same but the network prints shows me
• nothing on the TCP/IP settings,
• Use SNTP>off
• NTP Server Adress>192.168.1.175
• Use PASV Mod for FTP>on

Advice? Again, it would be nice to have a ppd that is not as old as I have.

Thanks!

Rino

PS: Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge here too, I know we all appreciate it!

Hey,
I downloaded the 4 September 2009 driver from Canon Australia website. although it says it only works till version 10.5, after installed it, do not use the more printers like before, just type in the IP and select the right printer from 'print using' row. Amazingly the correct MF 4600 series is available! and it works!

Hi Rino,

The setting you mentioned in the previous post was the NTP server address. This is the time server, the computer on the network that other computers use for obtaining the correct time. If you have entered this address into the Address section when adding the LPD print queue, then that would explain the communication error you are currently getting.

You mentioned before that you have a Fiery attached to the printer. If this is the case then you will not see the printer board settings via the menu you quoted. You need to press the arrow in the top right corner of the screen until you see the printer menu. Then from this screen you can find the Print Pages menu and the Configuration menu.

My MF4680 is network connected. I've tried the UFR2 v2.00 driver downloaded from canon u.s. website, but it doesn't work. canon must have tweaked the v1.8 and put it back as I can't see any change if I use the 'get info' of the .dmg folder.

The steps I installed the latest v1.8 are:
mount the latest v1.8 .dmg and run the installer> restart the Mac> system preference> printer&fax> click "+" to add printer> protocol=line printer daemon-LPD, address=printer IP, queue=LP, print using = select MF4600 series from the available list> click Add then restart the Mac> test print a document.
Do not use 'more printers'. I tried it and it did not work.

Good News!
Apple have released updated drivers for Canon Printers.
The new drivers support BJNP/IJNP for Printers (and don't break support for Scanners).
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899

Unfortunately, unlike when connected via USB, over a network multifunctional printers behave as two separate devices.

The included BJPrinterUtility2 is still only 32-bit, and appears to be just a recompile of Canon's old version.

Also, the download weighs in at a whopping 267MB. The only way a network protocol support file could be so huge would be if it was written in-house by Canon.

Bob,
I did a upgrade from 10.5 to 10.6.

The other possibility is I installed the US V2.2 driver before install the latest V1.8. You can see both drivers when you click 'more printers'. But I could not make V2.0 work so I '-' all printers on the add printer table.

You also have to make sure the .dmg folder to mount is exactly the latest on as it has exactly the same size and name as the older one.

PAHU! I found it. Boy I don't know why it was difficult and thank God it is set for IP! So I was able to print!

So, know here is my only issue - finding the right PPD. We have an what I was told an N-1 finisher. The iR3220 driver doesn't give me the options for that. If I use, which is the wrong one. the Canon iR3220 UFRII (US), I get the correct icon for the printer, all the options on the print set up, but communication error. If I use the iR3220 I have it won't do color (we have default set on B/W so people don't get happy), and I get a generic icon. Now if I use the old PPD I have from the iR200 I get all the options and can do color, but it won't staple and such and again, generic icon.

Thoughts?
and again - Huge Thanks!!

Hi Rino,

Good to hear that you got the printer working. As for the problem with the options can you confirm if you have the imagePASS-C1 or C2 (the Fiery on the back of the printer). If you do, then that would explain why you cannot use the UFR2 driver and why you have problems with the Canon PPDs as they are meant for the Canon printer board, not the imagePASS. Note that the imagePASS (Fiery) PPD will give you the generic looking laser icon, while the Canon drivers give you the imageRUNNER icon.
