Time Capsule Powered Off, Won't Power Back On

My Time Capsule was running just fine, then spontaneously just powered off by itself. All the other devices in the power strip were fine and I tried switching outlets, plugging it directly into the wall, and unplugging the TC and plugging the power cord back in. The network port lights in the back are out and the light on the front is dark. However, when I first plugged the cable back into the TC, the network lights came on for a split second. I'm guessing that there's a power connection fried (because if it were a power supply failure the lights would not have blinked on at all).

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Add another one to the list --- 834 range, purchased in 2009. No Apple Store in the area. Mad as fire because it just happened and, silly enough, I was using it as a backup and the first 3 years of my daughter's life in photos are on that thing, a year's worth of law school notes, and tens of clients worth of photo shoots on it and I can't access any of it. Worthless backup. Worthless.

I can't believe a company that puts out the ever-dependable Macbook et al would put their name on a piece of crap like the Time Capsule.

Please note the difference between backup and file store or NAS usage. Backup means all of this info is sitting on a computer/s somewhere.. all ready to be accessed. As a backup device Apple considers that TC is a consumable.. ie when one breaks you will simply buy a new one.. it is a pretty silly way to think and I think executive lunches have made their idea of a $400 box a consumable fairly remote from the average user but there it is. At some point a sealed single drive storage was going to break.. that it happened after 2years is irrelevant. No file store should be left without a backup. And there is a simple backup procedure for the TC via a usb drive.

Do not despair though.. the disk is fine (at least in about 50 repairs I have yet to see one dead) and it is relatively easy to repair as Bob has stated. We worked out how to do this 2years ago when they started going bad and Apple offered no help whatsoever.

But do note .. if you want a file store, then purchase a proper NAS with a mirrored raid plus backup is essential. Treat the TC as a backup only.

Hooray! I get to join the fml my TC died club. Also woke up this morning with zero internet connection, and no lights. I have another external that was a backup, but I was also using my TC as storage for the really old stuff I had to take off my laptop, like school files and whatnot.

This would be less of a problem if I wasn't in the boonies in Japan. The time difference here to the US kind of *****.

My own laptop is outside of Applecare, but the iMac my family bought isn't; I intend on using that one, but yeah, I'm not entirely sure how the shipping and everything is going to work, or if I should be contacting Applecare in Japan instead of in the States.

I also noticed last night that the signal strength was a little bit weaker than normal - my laptop, which was about five feet away, was only picking up three bars of signal. I suppose I should have taken that as a sign. Sigh.

Good thing about Applecare....its GLOBAL!

I just phoned the support guys in Europe & my local Apple Authorised service partner (yes, we still dont have an Apple Store in Belgium), will try to repair it & if they cant, Apple will replace it. They will also recover the data.

Turns out this is a known issue & there is some leeway even if the Time Capsule is out of warranty.

Bah...I'm post # gazillion with this problem. Mine died today out of the blue. It sort of died a couple of days ago...it was plugged into a power strip just fine so couldnt explain why it was not powering up. I just flipped the pins 180 degrees and plugged it back in and it powered up! Today, it just died on me again. The old trick did not work this time.

Probably will need to go to apple store. They should just recall this product or do a free repalcement...so many people having the same exact issue.

I have to add my 1TB TC to the ever growing list. I purchased mine July 30th 2009. Went to Apple store last week and they said it was probably the power supply and gave no hint that they were experiencing failures at an alarming rate. If they recognize the 1st generation version they should replace all the others that have failed in less than 24 months.

Add my Time Capsule to the list. I bought mine July 09 and was working fine, come in one morning and its all off. Power supply dead.

Called applecare, they said I would have to purchase Applecare for it to be repaired. I think the £230 I paid for it it should last a lot longer than this. I have now purchased a reliable My Book drive. I have a number of Apple products but apparantly my applecare on them wont cover the Time Capsule.

I am not going to purchase Applecare for my iPad, which was suggested. I would of thought the 12month warranty is irrelevant here, you would expect the product to be durable and last for reasonable time, especially from APPLE.

Has anyone here got anything sorted when out of warranty? Does anyone have suggestions? or a point of contact?

Well, I have the distinction of having TWO of 'em croak on me. First one was a first generation 500GB bought in late '07/early '08 (I forget which--it was back when I was using a 12" MacBook running Leopard). After erratic internet behavior ever since massive storms came through (I use a heavy UPS rather than just a surge-supp. strip), AppleCare and my ISP each accused each other of being the culprit (ISP claimed it was giving me good signal into a good cable modem, AppleCare said ISP was assigning invalid IP addresses to the TC and AP Express. I threw up my hands last week and bought a BRAND-NEW (first week the latest model came out) 2TB T.C. Worked okay and then today started playing Whack-a-Mole with Air Port Utility. (If I want to get online, I have to use my cellular hotspot---supposed to be saved for travel in the boonies and hideously expensive if I exceed my monthly data limit--but then APU can't discover my TC or Express, though it does list the network they're on; if I switch to that network, APU sees them but I can't get an internet connection--and in neither case can I do a Time Machine backup. I didn't drop three Benjamins only to be put through this Twilight Zone. Now I have to go upstairs and play "power-cycling roulette" with three devices and two different Tech Supports......all freaking night. I suppose I should be grateful I still have electricity, since I live in Chicago.......
