Canon MF4150 printing on 10.6

I installed 10.6 on my Imac this afternoon and all looked ok until I tried to print; the system did not recognize my canon mf4150 laser printer. OS X does not have a printer driver but the canon site site had a UFR II driver dated in 8-4-2009 that was good up through v10.5 (this was before v10.6 was released). I downloaded it and when I unpacked it and tried to set it up I keep getting error 9672 (looks like it was seen first in v10.3).

It seems that apple may have changed some file locations for v10.6, is it just a matter of moving some files?

I just found this on canon's web site

Mac OSX v10.6 Compatibility and Support Schedule

The software / drivers to support Mac OS X v10.6 should be available for downloading at our Web site around the end of October 2009. Please continue to check our website for updates as the schedule could change.

Looks like I'll be running upstairs to get printouts from my HP 5000 for a while . . .

Here's hoping Canon supports all functions of the imageCLASS series with their Snow Leopard compatible driver. Duplex printing doesn't always work correctly (I can't print PDF's in duplex mode on my MF6590), scanner functions aren't compatible with Macs, and Macs cannot access all functions using the built-in ethernet port.

Canon haphazardly threw together a driver for Leopard. Hopefully they won't do the same for Snow Leopard.

Ok, this seems to work for the devices that rely on UFRII, so ImageCLASS MF4100 printers and the like.

For some reason the imageCLASS MF4350d on Canon's website already offers UFRII 2.0 for OSX which was released on 08/06/2009. This version works for me on 10.6, while most of the other models still offer UFRII 1.8 which does not work.

If you cannot find it there, here the direct download

Installing then should be straight-forward.

Good luck!

By installing the v200 driver I was able to get my MF4150 printer working under snow leopard. i asked Canon about this and this was their response -

"Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
Our engineers have test the V200 driver in our 10.6 model, they discover
the driver is unstable and may cause the computer to crash if you
encounter this issue with your suggest to uninstall the driver, that is
why we are not recommending the V200 driver be installed on the new
10.6.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your
Canon Product.

Thank you for choosing Canon."

So far it's working for me but be warned it might cause instability.

My two Canon printers (ir2230 and I-Sensys MF6550, both connected via LAN) seem to work with 10.6 through these two workarounds:
1) shared by another Mac running Leopard; or
2) directly from Snow Leopard using 10.6 LPD internal protocol and generic PCL6 driver.
I guess fax and scanner will have to wait for Canon to get moving (Epson had the update two days after release!), I haven't made any attempts to install though.
Hope this helps.

This morning I got an update from Apple. When I looked at the details (before allowing the update) it said it was for Canon printers, when I let it proceed it said it was installing a v2.2 driver. When it finished, I printed out a few things ,that previously wouldn't print out correctly, and everything looks ok.

When I tried to look at the canon website it still only had the v1.8 for the MF4150 that was from August 6 that knew wouldn't work. Now i had tried a v2.0 UFR driver for a different canon printer that partially worked (did not like more than one page or anything with tables) so it looks like I got an update for the version 2 UFR driver. I rechecked that page and nothing has been updated there yet.

I have to assume this fix came from Apple not Canon, and for now printing works just fine..
