My wife is a teacher who uses a program called EdLine. In this program, she tracks her students' attendance, and grades. Since installing Snow Leopard, she is not able to open EdLine due to a constant EDPUTHTTPERROR message. She is not able to utilize this program on her MacBook Pro or my iMac unless we reinstall leopard as our OS. Unsatisfied with Snow Leopard in the few hours its been running.
I am one of the programmers who works on GradeQuick. I can assure you that GradeQuick had been tested on Snow Leopard before its release to the general public. We were preparing to have a GQ version released that was fully 10.6 compatible shortly after Snow Leopard was released. After Snow Leopard was released to the general public we began hearing of a problem with a number of other applications such as MS Excel and Photoshop that the 10.6 compatible version of GradeQuick also experienced. This bug resulted in the WindowServer (a background app the communicates with all applications running on your mac that have a GUI) crashing when typing in text fields. The crashing is very sporadic and may not happen to someone for weeks at a time but when the WindowServer does crash you lose any data that wasn't already saved in ANY GUI application that was running on your Mac. This is why we can not release a 10.6 compatible version of GradeQuick until this issue is resolved by Apple. I want to re-iterate that this is NOT a GradeQuick issue per-se but an issue with any Mac OS X application running on Snow Leopard that requires Rosetta.
The good news is is that the next revision of Mac OS X does appear to address the problem (since we have been testing on that revision). The release of the next revision of Mac OS X (10.6.2) appears to be imminent since the new Magic Mouse that Apple released last week references that as the recommended version when using Snow Leopard. When that is released we will begin rolling out the 10.6 compatible version of GQ which also has many new features added that the windows version had but the Mac version was lacking.
@dbainbridge... Thank you. I understand better what the bug is thanks to your explaination =) Please keep up the good work. as a superuser for 9 schools and an avid Mac user I would like to see the solution soon rather than later.
Problem is that photoshop and excel still work on my computer. I would much rather work on a piece of software that occasionally has glitches and loses some data than have to work on the same piece of software with the same bugs and the same data loss on a computer that just compounds the problems and suffers more than its fair share of in and of itself (the PC of excrement I have to use at school to use GQ currently). I can access GQ on my old iBook (back from the old folks home) and the plugin is ugly in the extreme on there so why oh why is edline still relying on poorly rendered plugin for a poorly designed software (extremely inflexible and geriatric in functioning) that is still relying on rosetta? Now do we really have that many OS 9 users still needing supported? If we do they really can stick with the old software.
If you search for the term UCKeyTranslate in these forums you will see many apps with the problem I am referring to, including Excel and Photoshop. Rosetta has nothing to do with supporting OS 9. As far as "ugliness", we are continuously making improvements in adding features and improving the GUI. The attendance chart is an example of this in the last revision and further improvements to the attendance chart were made in this yet-to-be-released version to make it look like a modern Mac OS X interface.
I work with a group that has 20 computers using Snow Leopard. Each of them use photoshop and excel daily. We have experienced NO problems with these two programs under Snow Leopard. Perhaps those who have a very old version of these programs are experiencing the problems you indicate but we are not having any problem except with GradeQuick.
Why are you still using Rosetta? Most professional applications have gone universal by now?
Why do I have to see all 8 of my classes grades in order to take attendance for one class? I have to mute my projector so students can't see each others grades in order to just take attendance.
If I try to take attendance from the seating chart, gradequick aborts, first time every time.
Why do I have to click 8 times just to take attendance. Our teachers will click over 500,000 times this year just to take attendance.
The good side to this debacle is that our tech people have convinced the central office to look at a different solution.
I agree with labrat7 on this. I'm on my schools tech committee and years ago recommended gradequick. I am now thinking we may need a different solution as well. And not just because of this SL issue. The whole interface is lacking.
I am really tired of the blame game...it's not my fault it's theirs. I hear that all the time from the children in my classroom...the blame game. Get over it and just fix the problem! Well, let me tell you that the GQ debacle was the last straw for me. The support from Gradequick (Edline) is more than terrible to say the least! Gradequick Mac looks and feels like it did under System 9 and yet my school has to pay the same price as others do for the updated Windows version. We are so feed up that we are looking for a different program. If you would treat your customers better and keep your product in the same decade (century) then may be we wouldn't be look for a different product. Just fix the GQ problem and get over yourself.
Installed 10.6.2 today. Looked on the edline site for a new version of the gradequick plugin. None was posted. Tried to run gradequick on 10.6.2. Still does not run.
It is now mid November. I have not been able to run gradequick on my own laptop since early September.
Now that 10.6.2 has been released, is there an expected release date for the new GradeQuick Web plugin? We have been waiting to update our schools computers and hoping our new ones will soon be able to use your software again!!!
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm actually an administrator of a school and my personal computer is a Mac running Snow Leopard. So I can't even log into teacher grade books if I need to. Totally not acceptable at this point - almost 3 months after the release of Snow Leopard. Where is the support from GradeQuick???
I really am trying to be understanding here, but I have to vent. I work in an all PC school district and it is things like GQWeb not working on 10.6.X that give fuel to the anti Apple folks in my district. I don't want to use VMWare or Parallels or BootCamp to help the teachers in the 9 schools that I help to manage. Please EdLine update the plugin or give us the option to beta test one that is mostly stble, so we can help you make it better.
