After Snow Leopard upgrade, bluetooth mouse connects but keyboard will not
All of a sudden, my bluetooth keyboard lost connection to my 2gHZ Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini. The mighty mouse hasn't had any issues, but the keyboard won't connect. The bluetooth finds the keyboard, but will not pair. Any ideas?
I’m not sure that Snow Leopard is to blame. I’m having the same issue with a wireless keyboard (not aluminum) that won’t pair with my dual PPC 2.5 G5 running 10.5.8 or my duo 2 MacBook running 10.6.1.
I'm having a similar problem. I installed Snow Leopard about a week ago, and all was well. Yesterday, I returned a defective (Apple) wireless keyboard to my local Apple store. (After 8 months, the option key had stopped working.) Apple replaced the keyboard, but now my MacBook will not pair with my Wireless Mighty Mouse.
The fact that everything worked fine in the week or so since I installed 10.6(.1) suggests to me that it's some sort of conflict between my new keyboard and the Mighty Mouse. I've rebooted, turned Bluetooth off and on, deleted the plist, reset the PRAM, reset the SMC, changed the batteries, and still nothing. I'm extremely annoyed by all this, as it seems many others are. How about a proper firmware update, Apple? After all, all the equipment I'm using was designed by you lot, in California.
Similar problem here. I'm running 10.5.8, and sometimes everything is well with my Bluetooth Keyboard & MightyMouse. But other times the Mouse goes crazy or doesn't even connect. If I turn both off and connect the Mighty Mouse FIRST, the keyboard second it works sometimes. Therefore my guess is that there is a conflict between the two devices, as jpurdon already mentioned before.
Knock-Knock, Apple! Any suggestions?
I'm by no means an expert, but I was experiencing the same problems as everyone else in that I had a bluetooth mouse that worked, then after updating snow leopard it stopped working. I experienced the same problem where it would appear to connect for a brief second, then the connection would be dropped. I was able to get the mouse working again by following most of the steps in this thread:
Delete the file in preferences like Barry suggested. Reset the PRAM. Then, reset the device and attempt to repair, however, instead of pairing as a mouse, pair under "any device". This gives you the option to select "no passkey" instead of "empty passkey" which appears to be default. Once I did this, the mouse was back up and working again. Hope this helps.
I had exact the same problem on Leopard on two different Macs both with 10.5.8.
I did like Barry said and it worked like a charm on an iMac and a Mac mini.
- delete "com.apple.bluetooth.plist" in MacintoshHD/library/preferences
- restart
- in the Bluetooth Setup Assistant choose "Any device" instead of "Mouse", this will give you the option to chose a Passkey Option in the next window
- in the following window, chose "Passkey Options" and check "Do not use a passkey with this device"
Then your mouse should/will show up in the "Devices" list and the rest is just about clicking "continue"
Sorry, no go. I've done all of the recommended solutions. Yours doesn't work because my bluetooth shows up in 10.6.1, but will not turn on no matter what I do. Simply put this is either a bug with Mac OS 10.6 or a bug in general in Apple's implementation of bluetooth. Perhaps bluetooth becomes corrupted over time and deletion of preferences or a clean install is required, however that is still a bug.

I tried again, just as you wrote, on my Macbook Pro with 10.5.8. First it seemed to be a success, but after 30min or so, the same problems occured: Mouse was not controllable anymore (jumped all over the screen), did not connect and similar.
same here, especially after wake up from standby mode mouse looses connection. Once managed it by cancel bluetooth daemon, but next time, workaround didn't work. Restart was necessary.
The computer already crashed 3 times and the crash report obviously blamed Bluetooth for that. By the way. as bluetooth 2.1+EDR might have a speed up to 2 Mbit, I am afraid, that 700 Kbit is normal 😟
I got my keyboard to work, but not sure exactly why. I'll just list what I tried and maybe that will help someone out.
My keyboard also mysteriously stopped pairing with my iMac (C2D).
I tried everything that Barry suggested multiple times. The keyboard still didn't pair, and I noticed that the green LED wasn't blinking. It was as though the keyboard assumed it was properly connected, the iMac could see it, yet would not pair with it.
I also checked to see if there was a conflict with the iMac and my Powerbook. There was none.
I disconnected my Mighty Mouse, and tried pairing the keyboard first. Still nothing.
I held down the keyboard's power button for a few seconds to turn it off and turn it on. This didn't work either, but for some weird reason, after the 100th time the keyboard did start blinking and the pairing worked.
Same issue on my 3.2GHz 8 Core Mac Pro running 10.6.1 with mini wireless apple keyboard. For whatever reason it was showing the keyboard but an error when connecting. Deleting the preferences folder worked like a charm.
You may be a victim of the aluminum foil syndrome. There is a known hardware issue with the Apple aluminum BT keyboard where after a while the battery stops making good contact and it loses power (the clue is that the green LED will no longer light). Here's the fix: fix. Amazing as this sounds, it really works.
