No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

What I did not explain very well was that the DIR-655 out of the box did not work with the iPhone and required the firmware upgrade before connectivity could be established with the iPhone. I have checked www.dlink.com.au and there is no firmware upgrade for the DIR-600. If your iPhone worked with the router prior to the iPhone upgrade it is more likely to be a iPhone issue and that is not to say that the Router can be ruled out. The only issue I could find on the Dlink site that related to Apple was an access issue in relation to an iPod. You might like to email Dlink and ask if they have any known issues with iPhone 3.1.2 and publish there response in this thread.

You also might like to power off the router wait a minute or two for the IP leases to be released and then power it back on. Resetting the iPhone in Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network might also be worth a try

Same symptoms: WiFi working (I write this on my PC on WLan). iPhone drops WiFi connection after a too short while.
What did you do to reset the WLan router. I Powerbootet it, iPhone connected, but only shortly. I'D hate to run on a fix IP number.
ISP Modem, Motorola, Surfboard SB5100i
DLink WLan DKT110 (to which a mini Switch is connected).
iPhone 3GS 32MB, 3.0.2 (went flaky with 3.0.2 for sure, don't know about 3.0.1)
Both WiFi and LAN connections to mini switch from laptop work fine.

Can one go back to earlier OS versions ? Does this help ?

Are the statements: reseting completely WLan modem or fixed IP number working fixes ?
What about hardware exchange ? My iPhone is 3 months old

Thanks for input and this discussion.
What can we do to improve Apple awarness ? Don't know anyone in Silicon Valley anymore who could help.

i had this problem 3 times, first time i went to get my phone changed, thinking that it was a hardware problem....but the same thing happened to my new phone, so i guessed it wasn't hardware related. I solved the problem by doing the network reset on the phone, and also updated my router's firmwire. yesterday i had the same problem AGAIN (after a few weeks), there was no firmwire update for my router, the network reset didn't work, so i re-installed my router's firmwire, and it works again....
i hope this works for you guys too

(FYI, i use a Linksys router)

Hi , same problem for me after upgrading to 3.1.2 , i tried to apply the reset network settings methods and other tips but it didn't work. without any other option i booked on internet an appointment with a "genius" and went to the genius bar at the new Apple store "le Louvre" in Paris. after 20 minutes applying the methods that now everybody facing this issue knows ; turn on airplane mode / Reset network etc + full reset of the iphone , the guy finally apply the last fix : replace the iphone (only 8 days before end of warranty) and he admits that there was a hardware pb with this iphone serie ...

Ok I had this issue as well. I have a unlocked iphone 3GS and it couldnt see any wifi networks. I had to do a restore from itunes (not from backup) that put the phone back to all original settings. Then I had to unlock it again and them I tested the wifi. It works perfectly. I then ran the restore from my data backup and when it finished the wifi no longer worked. That sucked. I had to do it all over again. I deleted the backup and only did a sync of all of my information that was stored on my computer. This put back everything but my text messages. I can live without those messages in order to get my wifi working. So just do the steps above and your wifi will work.

I have tried EVERYTHING and it does not work. This is why Apple has been replacing the iPhone 3G even after the warranty period is over. It may be that just a certain number of these phone have the wifi problem .... but it definitely is there .... and now if you check the number of people writing in .... its more than 57k .... so there must be many more around the world where these handsets are working, like in India and most don't even know about the wifi. Many just use it without ever synching with iTunes .... otherwise may be the numbers would have gone to many more .... it is definitely a software problem affecting the wifi chip. It heats up and stops working after the 3.1 upgrade.

This is so frustrating. I am on my fifth iPhone 3GS - my 4th with the WIFI problems. ( my first iPhone 3GS had a cracked body out of the box)
I've done the settings reset, restoring from new, and everything else Apple has asked and suggested, but yet my WIFI still drops out after a few minutes.
As I said, I'm on my fifth 3GS - and now this one is doing the same thing. I can't be this unlucky - there has to be something wrong with the way they are built.
My old 3G, my wife's 3G, and our MacBook Pro all work fine with the WIFI so I know it's not the Apple wireless router.
I'm so frustrated at this point. Do I bring it back to the Apple Store and replace it again? Any chance this gets resolved in a firmware update? Again, so very frustrating.

Just got off the phone with Apple. Since all the steps they suggest don't work, they say the wifi problem is a hardware issue. So they said to return it and get another one. So lets hope iPhone 3GS number 6 works. This is so frustrating.
According to rep I talked to, WiFi issues on the 3GS aren't that common.
So why is it I've gone through 4 now with the same problem? Sounds like a common issue to me.

I have tried all the getto fixes posted here and on the net but still no wifi. I believe it to be a software problem, so I tried one last thing. I purchased an app called Wififofum from the app store and installed it. With that app I can see and connect to any wifi once again.

This was my proof that the issue is the firmware, and not the wifi chip in the phone. By the way, the iphone wifi software started working again after I connected with Wififofum and I have had no problems yet.

It worked for me, mabey it will also work for some of you
