No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

Greetings,

I didn't have any issues with WiFi after the upgrade, before or since, and I never do,anywhere I go, but I met one person who did in our organization.

His phone wasn't showing any available networks, after 3.1, when you went to the WiFi page on the phone.

I shut down off the WiFi, and turned off "Ask to Join Networks". Then I turned the iPhone completely off, by holding the top button down until the red slider came up, I slid it off, and waited a few moments.

I turned the phone back on, then turned on the WiFi, and "Ask to Join Networks". I waited a few more moments, and the local wireless network, at the campus, showed up. I, of course, had to put in the WAP2 passphrase back in, and he was up and running.

I told him he would need to do the same thing at every wireless network he went to, that required a WAP2 passphrase. He reported back that every site he visited, worked fine, including his home.

WEP is a lousy security method, and no one should still be using it - You need to make sure you put it in right, and know whether or not it's ASCII or HEX.

I don't know anyone still using it, and if their equipment will only use WEP, I'd lose it and get a newer router - they are really cheap these days. I use an Airport Extreme, but at work we have Aruba wireless equipment. Juniper is excellent as well. For the home, I'd only use Apple, or Netgear routers. I have had the best luck recommending them to other users, and they have all been very satisfied.

I'm a Network Engineer/Manager at a fairly large JC, and have had good success with these suggestions, when our staff or faculty ask.

Good Luck - Cheers,
M.

It's WPA2, not WAP2. 🙂

In my case, I can see the wi-fi networks, I just have trouble joining the G-only network on my D-Link. When my AirPort Extreme is set to G compatibility mode, then the iPhone joined 5 of 5 times without a problem. But that slows down the N devices on the network so I won't run like that.

I followed your suggestions, even though this takes more time and trouble than just manually requesting to join the random 1 to 20 times, and it doesn't help. Once I've managed to join the D-Link network, the iPhone remains connected and I get good throughput.

Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried doing that though. Still nothing. It won't even detect networks around me. I've tried resetting network settings, turning airplane mode on and off, restarting, recovering normally, recovering with 3.0 instead of 3.1.. I would think it had something to do with my router but my roommate has the same exact phone and OS and his works fine. I'm going to take it to the Genius bar tomorrow in hopes they can do something. If not hopefully they will just give me a new phone. I've only had this thing a week. I'm tired of trying to fix a brand new phone.

Im the same. I sitting here looking at my router and it must be no more than 4 metres away and yet my 3.1 iPhone 3G cant find the wifi. This problem has been driving me insane since the upgrade. Its not the router its the **** phone. I rave about my iPhone and yet its poxy little issues like this that make me want to throw it through the window. It smacks of inadequate testing on Apples part because the previous version of the OS worked fine. What's going to break in the next upgrade after (if) they fix this one?

Also (and not wifi but still network related) 3G reception is all over the place. Its weak (where before it would be fine) and chops and changes from 3G to non 3G like a maniac. Ive thought about upgrading to a 3GS but why the **** should I? Im quite happy with this one thanks.

Apple pull your finger out and get this fixed.

Same here, stupid **** 3.1. It's not even on the model dropdown on this Message reply page. No wifi, and can't go back to 3.0 thanks to your stupid changes to the phone's core firmware in 3.1.

I wish I stayed on 3.0. In the future, if a product works fine I don't think I'll upgrade - after all, chances are I'm going to lose stability, functionality, versatility all for what ... some minor UI changes.

Grr.

Just for the record, since the OS 3.1 upgrade a few weeks ago, my Wi-Fi connectivity has been very flaky, with the phone disconnecting and reconnecting all the time for no apparent reason. Then this weekend I first noticed that the battery seemed to be draining faster than normal. Second I noticed that my phone would not connect to my home wifi at all. It would search for wireless networks but not find any. Specifying the network SSID would result in an error message that it can not scan for networks.

Messing around with all the different reset options I was able to connect the phone to the network one more time. But since then it has not been able to connect, and now shows no Wi-Fi on the phone at all. i.e. a grayed out No Wi-Fi 'option' in the settings screen.

It seems that over the last two days the Wi-Fi HW in the phone has gone from good to bad.

Same problem....***, 2g iPhone 16giga with both 3.0.1 and 3.1 firmware.....It seems to connect to my home wpa2 wifi connection, but cannot load pages or anything else....It just works fine with unprotected networks, and i'm asking myself why does it work in my university where the network is protected with an authentication certificate....So with wpa2 at home it does not work, but at university with certificate network authentication it does work....**** it!
