No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

What I would do is

on the iPhone in Wi-Fi Networks in Settings perform a 'Forget this Network' if that is not the solution then in Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings.

on the router release the IP Lease for the iPhone power the router off and back on again.

check with the supplier of the router and make sure that there has not been an upgrade to the routers firmware if there has then upgrade the router but make sure that you backup the current configuration before doing so

If none of that works repost and I will take you through the next step

I just signed up for an account here to put in my 2 cents.

The 3.1 upgrade made my WiFi at home and abroad very flakey.
It used to latch onto my home network automatically when I pulled
in the driveway but not after the upgrade. My SSID was not being
broadcast before with 3.0 with no issues. I had to enable SSID on
my Belkin N-router after 3.1 to get it to work as usual. I also
am using WPA\WPA2 for Authentication.

I'm very disappointed with Apple. Have been looking forward to the update (3.1.2) for some time, which did not fix the wi-fi. Can not get 3G indoors, so everything is sooo slow. I am less than a month out of warranty 😟 Will switch to another phone as soon as I can afford it, or Apple issue a release which fixes the iPhone, whichever comes first.

I have an iPhone 3G 16GB. The update to 3.0 was fine, 3.0.1 made it slow to wake up and I was dropping so many calls but I knew that 3.1 had worse problems. OPTUS tech support told me that updating to 3.1 should fix the problems. It did, but now I have no wi-fi. Wi-fi settings are accessible and MAC address exists, however it doesn't find any networks and when I manually type in the network settings it immediately tells me "Could not scan for wireless networks."

I've tried resetting network settings, resetting the phone settings, resetting the phone, restoring several times. Even before apps and settings are restored it won't find any networks.

Well I called up Support today, fearing that I was about to stump up for a new phone. iPhone OS 3.0 killed by GPS in July/August. Phone was replaced. iPhone OS 3.1 killed the wifi.

Spoke to a support guy who said he hadnt heard of the issue before and even better "Don't listen to the people on the apple forums, because the forums attract that people who have problems" yuh huh yea good.

Turns out that my Warranty replaced iPhone ia still within it's 90 day limited warranty. No problem, replacement handset on the way...

In Australia I was informed by an Apple Genius that the warranty on the iPhone replaced within the warranty period expires on the same day date as that for the origional purchase. To ensure that I have a warranty for the useful life of the iPhone [in my view say 2 years] I have taken out the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone [small price to pay if they cannot make it work they give you a new one]. I have always found Apple to be more than helpful in remedying any issues that I have had - given the opportunity.

Chage I had the same experienced, I called them up and that support guy said to not listen to these forums since everyone here is just "venting" and that I shouldn't trust everything that's said online. Great support apple, don't even acknowledge people are posting about problems on your own message board.

The support guy who says not to listen to the support forums is exactly the kind of guy that should be fired. People don't make up problems and then waste their time coming here to vent. It's quite obvious from the number of posters and posts that this is a widespread problem that needs to be fixed. There are many times more people who have the problem than those that make it to this support forum and bother to post.

It's not a hardware problem if one day the wi-fi works and immediately after installing the update it doesn't work again. That's clearly a software problem. The number one rule of debugging is to ask what has changed between when it was working and when it fails. It's the update.

Again, my iPhone connects every time to my AirPort Extreme when the router is in G-compatibility mode, yet takes an average of 8 manual tries to connect to my D-Link in G-only mode, the same router that my 1st gen iPod Touch can connect with first time, every time. It's pretty clear to me that the software negotiating the connection with non-Apple base stations is flaky. I *will not* buy another Apple base station to correct Apple's problem.

Some have said that the 3.1.1 update does not fix the wi-fi problem. I'm downloading the update now and will see. If it doesn't, that's a slap in the face.

I have recently been given a new replacement as after upgrading to OS 3.0 my wifi said "NO WIFI" .... nothing I did brought it back ... not even upgrading to 3.1 but I was lucky an the phone has been replaced with a new one and the wifi is working in it. What I am doing now is only turning on wifi when required as I did find out that it stops only when it gets heated ... so it's a hardware problem. I did hold it carefully in front of the freezer draft vanes and when the temperature dropped the wifi did come on. But lasted for hardly a few minutes after bringing it back to normal temperature. I love the phone and can't think of a better handset ... but I am scared that the wifi may go bad again. I want to go for the 3GS when it's introduced in India .... but even without the 3GS I am very satisfied with the 3G. I only hope something or the other shouldn't go bad with the latest upgrades ... in India there are no Apple Stores to give support. It has to be given back to the service provider and they handed it over to the Apple Service and it all takes a lot of time. Hope your problem gets solved too.
