HP LaserJet 1022 Printing Problems - Please Post Here

Sorry, I hate to create a new thread, but tracking so many different threads on this one issue is becoming problematic for me. So with that being said, if you are still having a problem with printing to a LaserJet 1022 after the full uninstall I detailed in the FAQ thread followed by installing version 2.2 of the HP driver package, then let me know here. And specifically I want to know is which device you have, how your device is connected, the print driver version, and what apps are giving you problems. In my own personal testing, here is what I have found:

USB direct connect - OK, I have yet to run into a problem here.
USB connected to an Airport Extreme N - OK, I have yet to run into a problem here.
USB connected to an Airport Express G - Paused problem. I got print job/page out and then the printer paused and would not resume. I don't have a functioning work around here yet, but I'm trying.

So if I were going to fill out my own form, it would look like this:

Printer: LaserJet 1022n
Connection: USB connected to an Airport Express G (Firmware version 6.3)
Driver Version: 1.1.0.182
Apps: All
Problem Description: Printer queue goes into a Paused mode and won't resume

And to get you started, I have left a blank template at the end of this post.

Also please make sure to include whether you have the 1022, 1022n, or 1022nw AND how it is connected to your Mac. If users of the 1020, what to chime in on this thread that is OK. Anyone else, please post in the FAQ thread or a different device specific thread. As the 1022 seems to be the most problematic at the moment, I'd like to track this down as quickly as possible.

Problem Description:
The LaserJet only prints odd pages and finishes job with a blank page. Sometimes blank pages get shuffled (in a random way, e.g. 2 pages when printing 21) between pages. Paper tray is not overfilled or pages aren't sticking together. Issue occurs on either USB or Ethernet connection.

Connection: Ethernet home network, printer gets IP address by DHCP, discovered by client machine using Bonjour. Although the machine is a MacBook Pro, this test is using the wired network only with the MBP's wifi disabled.

Problems: I don't seem to have any problem printing, although there is a red #1 on the printer whenever I do print. All pages seem to print without issue.

Is Apple or HP going to do something about this? It's ridiculous that users are expected to reset there computer, printing cache over and over again when it's simply nothing to do with that... The new drivers clearly don't work properly... It concerns me that Apple and HP don't seem to want to take any responsibility for this... We have started this thread on the HP site and it's the same responses... 'Do this', 'Test that', 'Break this', 'Break that'...

Again this is isn't a USER related problem it's a Software related problem.

Problem Description: Printer queue looks for printer, when ready to print, print document and closes with out any data transferred to the printer. I have installed the both Apple and HP printer updates without any success. I get the same results when connect to Airport Express...no matter how many printer reset I have tried....
At a lost...can not believe the Snow leopard update kills the printer

I want to assure you that we are doing something about this. That is why this thread exists. I am trying to gather as many details about the problem as I can. The fact is that the driver for the 1022 had to be re-written from the ground up for Snow Leopard. Doing this present some challenges. And while we have been able to overcome most of the challenges, we clearly have work to do. I accept that fact. The big problem is we are unable to reproduce most problems with the 1022 that users are having, which makes it hard to debug. Making things work is a top priority, and when I have any updates, I will post them.

Are you able to share any insight as to the nature of those challenges for the 1022 driver under SL?

I'm just curious given that the 1022 driver already existed under previous MacOS X releases, what is so different under SL?

Also given that both the 1020 and 1022 printers do have listed drivers from HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing), and HPLIP even uses Apple's CUPS printing subsystem by default, why couldn't that be used as a base for HP's Mac drivers for the 1022 and 1020 printers?

Further to that, is there not any synergy with the P1005/6 printers just in terms of how to integrate a printer that requires a firmware upload into SL?

Sorry for dumping... just my thoughts running a bit wild on this issue!

In any case, please add my vote for an unofficial unsupported 1020 driver for SL once you sort out the 1022 issues!

oh just one final thought... the 1020 may not ever have been an officially supported printer under Mac OS X but issues of official support didn't stop HP from making drivers available under HPLIP for hundreds of printers, many of which are much older and more obscure than the 1020, and I bet 90% of those were never ever official Linux Supported Printers!

I've never understood why some people have trouble and others don't. My 1022 works just fine on my 24" iMac8,1 running OS X 10.6.1 and HP driver 1.1.0.182. The only thing missing is a feature, namely the manual duplex feature. But as for printing it works perfectly. No issues what-so-ever. One would think, if the driver has issues, that ALL of us would be printing only every other page, which seems to be the most reported issue.

No, I don't consider myself fortunate or lucky. Luck most certainly does NOT explain why my 1022 works fine on my system and not on yours. It tells me that the issue may or may NOT be related to the driver itself but may involve some interaction of software. No two systems are identical. And add to the mix the fact that there are relatively few people reporting issues with the 1022 compared to other printers. The 1022 was a very popular, affordable laser printer so there must be quite few out there working on Macs. I'm not trying to let HP off the hook on this but there's more to this than meets the eye.

OK, you've asked a loaded question, and unfortunately you'll only get the full answer from me over a beer, not posted in a public forum like this. That being said I can address some of the issues.

First, since you mention CUPS, you obviously understand at least basic parts of the print system. So with that being said, the 10.5 solution for the LaserJet 1022 (and many of the HP printers) is a Tioga based (old style Mac OS X drivers), while the 10.6 solution for everything is CUPS. While Apple has been transitioning to CUPS for a while now, 10.6 is really the first OS that forces driver vendors to use CUPS since there is no way to support 64 bit apps with Tioga. Also, print and fax drivers (at least part of them) run inside the Application runtime, so we must be able to support 32-bit and 64-bit, as well as be garbage collected aware since we run in both garbage collected and non-garbage collected apps. And then there is Carbon and Cocoa, and lets not forget about PPC and Intel (yes I know Snow Leopard is Intel only). So its been an interesting few major releases for us since 10.4 first came out.

Now, without getting into the stuff I will not get into here, do you actually see source code available in the project you pointed to for the 1022? Enough said on this topic.

Finally as for the 1020, I can say it will NEVER be officially supported under OS X, but you may be pleasantly surprised if you try the next version of our drivers while printing to it. But you didn't hear that from me. 😉

This is the major problem. We have yet to duplicate the majority of problems that people are having. We have tried on the 1022, 1022n, and 1022nw all without issue. Yes there is a problem with older Airports (an issue we have reported to Apple), and a lack of the "cool" manual duplex feature the device had (although we are working on it), but for us as it does for you, it just works.

The only reason I am not ruling out a problem with the actual print driver is because the 1022 is the only printer that lots of people are complaining about in these forums where the problems so far haven't turned out to be just an install or networking issue. So I continue to gather data, and we continue to look into it, hoping that eventually something will break the log jam we are having. That being said, I agree. Given the number of 1022 users out there (and there are lots of them), I wouldn't consider the ones working to be lucky, I'd consider the ones where it doesn't work to be unlucky.

Now for the people who are having problems, can you open up /Application/Utilities/Console.app and when you print are you seeing any messages show up that would indicate a problem? Either when viewing All Messages or drilling down into the cups logs?

Note that as with any printer, printing even then odd pages is still supported so you can get manual duplexing, you just have to print twice.
