I have been reading alot of the posts and I am exeriencing the same problem with the mini display port to DVI cable (I know wrong forum, but same issue). I have a Macbook Pro (summer 2012). It will work great for a few days then all of a sudden my screen will flicker and go to black. Sometimes I just get a screen of snow. Most of the time it's when the Macbook Pro is coming out of stand by. I have to then power down the Macbook, disconnect the mini diplay port, boot the Macbook back up and then plug the mini diplay port back into the laptop.
I called Apple and they recommend I take it into an Apple store. Problem is an Apple store is 2 hours away and I am not sure they will be able to replicate the problem. I know it's not a monitor issue, since I have switched out the monitors and the issue still occurs. I have reformated the HDD many times. Still not sure what is causing the issue.
I gave up using an external monitor. I'm having the same issue with the display port to DVI. Works for a couple days then the screen goes black or all snow. I have to reboot the Macbook Pro and then plug in the display port to DVI connector. It's not a monitor issue, cause it works just fine when plugged into my PC. I think Apple knows about the issues, (because I called Apple support), they just cannot replicate the issue. So they act like they have never heard of it. I also started a new thread about the display port to DVI issue.
For what it's worth I just edited the Wikipedia page on Mini DisplayPort linking back to this thread. Look at the Compatibility section.
Thanks for that but it isn't really what this thread is about, we are discussing how to get the signal from a mini display port into an HDMI on a television, not DVI or composite analog.
Same difference, the adapter will transfer the video from the mini display port to the HDMI cable. You will have video but no sound.
Mini DisplayPort has had sound support since 2011 and the probem being discussed effects all machines with Mini DisplayPort. Multiplexing isn't the issue.
Just as an FYI I have a iwires minidp to hdmi ... running mountain lion on a mpb mid2011 ... I can mirror and add a side display no problem. Hope that helps. Thanks.
anyone else have any success with this brand?
I have a late 2011 model MBP and it doesnt support sound out through the mini display port. I have done my rounds with apple and according to them, they still dont support it in the newer models.
Yep, I used a cheaper brand and it was terrible, barely ever worked, and only at very low res. iWires has worked like a charm.
I am still having the same issue on my MacBook Pro (summer 2012 non-Retina Display). I started an Apple discussion a couple weeks ago. My issue is the mini-display to DVI cable. The cable is an Apple cable, not a third party cheap cable. Apple support did not help, hadn't heard of the issue.
External Monitor Goes Black using Mini-Display Port to DVI Cable
thanks - but if you read the thread you'll see that we've tried all those variations.... with only occasional limited success.....
I've just submitted a complaint to http://www.hdmi.org . Apple is supposedly an adopter, but. I'm not sure if this applies to MacBook pros in that there isn't actually an hdmi port.
