iTunes just starts up by itself and it plays 1st song on my list

I just found the reason was with bluetooth. I have 2 headsets that would connect and one automatically tries streaming. Once I removed that device, the problem went away.

Interesting to note. It was still happening even when all my BT devices were turned off. So just the fact that the one device was registered in the BT settings created the issue.

Someone at Apple decided it was a good idea to start iTunes automatically when the headphones are inserted, regardless whether you wanted to or not, regardless whether it is a good idea or not. They also took away coverflow (I'm quoting an Apple person here) "because it is so 2000's".

Poor decisions like this make me look to Windows again.

Yup. Me too. This is an ongoing problem and it's INCREDIBLY UNPROFESSIONAL that Mac has done exactly nothing fix it. You're rapidly burning through your reputation as people who make stuff that works, ya schmucks.

Oh, my beloved Wacom tablet!

iTunes keeps launching by itself when I have my Wacom Intuos connected to my Mini 2011 and this behavior disappear as soon as I disconnected it.

This was making me NUTS -- iTunes launching itself or just making itself the front window on the screen while I was working. And it seemed to be getting more frequent.

After reading some of these comments, the one rogeriomarques wrote about the "play button patch" got me wondering if something in the mouse was acting like a "play button." Turns out there was.

Open the mouse preference panel and see if the side buttons are set for "Open iTunes." Mine were! Set it to "Off." Problem solved!

Just found a quick fix for this problem...

Make an empty playlist in iTunes and have that playlist selected. iTunes will still open when you close it but it won't play any music. Hopefully Apple can fix this soon.

another quick fix: I went into the settings of Itunes and checked the box to start up in 32 bit mode. Itunes needs to start up in 64 bit mode; thereby it errors and I get a warning that ITUNES cannot start up. That message sits in the backround.

I'm on a macbook pro mid 2010 with OS X Maverics and Itunes 11.1.4

I have the same problem, when I unplugged my Bose speakers it stopped. Whats up with that?
