I had the same problem on my iMac running Mountain Lion. The cause of my problem, which I found out some time ago, was the head-phone connection. I have a splitter connecting my iMac to my amp and head phones in parallel. Disconnecting the headphones solved the problem. It seems to be an issue with poor connection....

Just to prove the point, I'd forgotten all about it and wondered why I kept my headphones disconnected!-)) Connected them again, and voila, problem started reoccurring! Took some time to scratch the grey matter, before I remembered the solution.

I had the same problem. The issue as mentioned by many other people was my headphones. The solution was installing the voice plugin for chrome. It works perfectly now.

It's been almost a year since the last reply. I'm not sure if there's already a solution for this but I am facing the same problem just recently, after upgraded to Apple Music. My iTunes just open and play on its own (maybe after I've connected my iPhone to my Mac).

- I dont install any widget.

- I'm on MBP 13 inch mid 2009 model, running Yosemite, iTunes 12.2.0

- iTunes plays music on random, NOT the 1st on my list.

- I have just changed my battery like a week ago.

- I am connected to an external speaker

Any idea what could cause this and how to stop it? It's really annoying especially when I am trying to watch movies.

It just so randomly happens. Sometimes during my sleep it plays in sleep mode and freaked the sh*t out of me in the middle of the night. Sometimes I go to work and come back to find it is playing music.

The original post was in 2012 and still happening in OSX Yosemite with the new music app. Apple would you do something?

My iTunes library opens on its own and starts with the first song. I don't lick on it at all. It just comes on.

Nailed it! My wrist must have rested on the Apple ear buds remote panel (the + -, volume button) causing iTunes to open. When I tested your theory by pressing between the + and - signs for 1 sec., lo and behold, iTunes opened again! Thanks for your input. I clicked that your answer helped me, it that's important.

You go into activity monitor and look for "iTunes Helper." It should be unresponsive, (red) and you click force quit on it. It should stop opening. :-)

I just found a solution. Well to disable itunes anyway. You can't uninstall it and it opens all the time and starts playing while I'm editing video, it's confusing as **** sometimes.

Here's my solution: Open your applications folder. Right (option click) on the itunes package. Choose "get info." Change all the permissions to "no access" or "read only" and the system can't open itunes anymore!
