iTunes Error 42408 After 9.03 Upgrade

I am receiving the error 42408 after upgrading to 9.03. Google did not yield any results. The error appears attempting to authorize my Powerbook.

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I have found that when you put in your id and password that the authorisation fails every time with the 42408 error. I then press cancel and the iPod sync stops.

I then disconnect the iPod, close iTunes and re-connect the iPod again and don't get the authorisation request. I can then continue as normal, play purchased protected songs etc.

Of course nothing's fixed and it does occur again, as someone else suggests, it seems to be on the first start up of iTunes after a reboot.

I have tried removing SC Info and it made no difference.

Of course the problem with the eventual fix for this issue, when it comes, is that something else will be stuffed.

This isn't the first time there has been an issue affecting customers iTunes purchases for a considerable time, but it really should be the last.

Only thing that worked for me was to go here http://www.blogsdna.com/5408/download-itunes-9-0-2-for-windows-mac.htm

and download iTunes 9.02

Then go to your Applications folder and drag the iTunes icon to the bin.

Install 9.02 and everything is as it was before the upgrade. I didn't notice that there are any features to miss out on in 9.03 other than the annoying one.

Other fixes appeared to work for me, but all of them only seemed to work temporarily.

Here is what has worked for me.

On the first start-up of iTunes after a reboot, make sure the iPod is not connected to the computer. If you have an iPhone, leave it connected. The iPhone is not affected by this bug. Once iTunes is launched, connect your iPod to the computer.

If you should forget to disconnect the iPod and do get the error message asking to authorize, just quit iTunes, restart iTunes, and then connect your iPod back to the computer, and all will be fine. You can then sync or do anything you'd like, and it should work fine,.

I suspect that something is wrong with the music lists in iTunes, and that some type of error message is generated with playlists that were created with earlier versions of iTunes. I also suspect that there is a bug somewhere in the iTunes software regarding connected iPods on start-up that automatically launch iTunes, and that's where the real bug lies. However, I am not a programmer, just a user.

Hope this helps. It's not a solution, but rather a workaround until Apple can solve the issue.

Hello,
I've followed your advice to Step 5, which provides a temporary solution.

However, if the Mac is put into sleep, or restarted with the iPod already connected, its back to square one and I need to repeat the procedure.

This only affects file kind 'Protected AAC audio file', whereas 'Purchased AAC audio files' play OK.

I've had good support from the iTunes Store in Germany until now, as the only other solution was to de-authorize all computers, which they have to do as I did it already once in the past 12 months; which also gives me the opportunity to question that particular restriction. However, again, this only works once, before the problem re-occurs on the next start-up of the Mac.

Again, this only started after installation of iTunes 9.0.3.
