iTunes Error 42408 After 9.03 Upgrade

I am receiving the error 42408 after upgrading to 9.03. Google did not yield any results. The error appears attempting to authorize my Powerbook.

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

I had the same problem. Check the version of iTunes via the About dialog. Mine said 9.0.2 despite having upgraded via system updates, itunes and even downloading the whole package again.

Turns out, the dock iTunes link is running the old one. Basically, remove it from the dock, and re-drag the itunes from the applications folder back onto the dock. This then started 9.0.3 for me, and my iTunes account worked, the itunes store worked and iphone sync worked as well. Phew.

Check the bottom of this page for my reference http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2311

Thanks so much - that worked for me.

UNTIL the next time I tried to run it. Sigh. Error again.

Hello all,

If you are experiencing the -42408 error syncing with a iPod or iPhone after updating to iTunes 9.0.3, please try these steps:

1. Eject and disconnect the iPod/iPhone from the computer.
2. Open iTunes.
3. Find a protected song from the iTunes Store (Kind = Protected AAC audio file) in your library.
4. Play the song.
5. Connect your iPod/iPhone.

Do you still get the error? If so, try these steps:

1. Carefully follow the steps in the "Remove the SC Info folder" section of this Knowledge Base document: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389
2. Re-authorize your computer: Store menu > Authorize Computer...
3. Sync your iPod or iPhone.

Do you still get the error?

Please report your results back here, and if one of my suggestions helped, let me know which one.

Thanks,
Roy

I did the first suggestion; now, when I plug my iPod into the computer, iTunes no longer starts automatically. And when I start it up I get the error again.

Now did that (second option) and it says the folder can't be found.

Out of sheer desperation, here is what eventually worked for me.

In addition to the authorization problem, the error was also asking me authorize with an old Apple ID that no longer exists. I had some purchased music that would still play, and some that gave me the error.

I started selecting various purchased songs just to see how many played and how many didn't. I eventually clicked on one that gave me the error with my current Apple ID instead of the old one. I entered my PW, selected Authorize, and Presto!, it worked.

During all of this my iPod was not connected. With a lot of apprehension, I plugged in the iPod and it synced just fine. But still thinking that the solution can't be that simple, I ejected my iPod, quit iTunes, plugged my iPod into the Mac, and iTunes started up and synced again with no errors.

Not very scientific, but maybe worth a try for those of you still having problems.

This is a very frustrating issue. I have tried every single step mentioned above, but the error 42408 always comes back, telling me my iPod is not authorized to play several of my purchased songs.
Removing the SC Info folder....check
Removing the plist file..............check
Restore iPod settings...............check
Remove and reinstall iTunes....check
De authorize....re authorize Computer....check

All of the above mentioned steps work temporarily, after a reboot, the issue will return.
I am waiting to hear back from Apple iTunes support on this.

In the meantime, on a Windows Machine that I have Authorized, I am burning all of my Purchased Songs to a Virtual CD Drive.

Issues like this makes you really re-evaluate how/where you buy music and how much DRM is involved.

Back to buying CD's again perhaps.

Having the same problems. Cannot transfer any of the older DRM songs since the "upgrade". It will work then after the reboot I'll run into the same problems. Going to copy songs to a USB drive and wait until Apple comes out with a fix since this is impacting thousands of users and I don't think any of their recommended solutions work yet. Everything worked fine before the upgrade.

There are some really strange things in itunes. First I had the genius mix fail to play issue which was resolved by checking all the songs as suggested in a chat. I hate having them all checked as that was always an easy way to find new stuff, oh well. Now after going to 9.03 I too have the 42408 error after trying to re authorize. I have found that canceling the reauth, ejecting the ipod (but leave it attached), quitting itunes, restart itunes seems to work for me every time and the previously unauthorized songs are not flagged and synch goes without hitch. Still, come on, time to fix this stuff apple!
