Exchange Email - Cannot Get Mail, connection to server failed
I have a new iPhone 3GS, i can setup my exchange account through the iphone and the account comes back as verified, however i cannot get any mail. All i get is Cannot Get Mail, The connection to the server failed. I have tested my account settings on a Windows Mobile 6 device and it connects fine. Any ideas as this is now driving me crazy!!!!!!!
I am also having the same problem. I can connect to the exchange server no problems. Contacts and calendars sync okay backwards and forwards. I cannot get mail. It keeps coming up with Cannot get mail - user name or password are incorrect. The username and password are not incorrect - they are the same ones I use to login in with web access. Anybody out there got any ideas. It's getting a bit frustrating having to go into Safari and webmail everytime I want to check for emails.
If this is a new problem for only a few users, you might try having your exchange admin do an IISreset on the front exchange server. We had 2 out of 10 users having this exact problem - calendar and contacts would work fine but no email. I could wipe the setting and use another user on the same device and everything would work fine, switch back to the original user and nothing. The iisreset fixed it.
Well, I've tried an iisreset, but still no luck. Strange thing is the connection works when I test with other accounts. (I tried an unattended service account and also another user's account -- and she has FAR MORE emails sitting in her account than I do.)
I'm really stumped. I compared our mailbox settings, and mine are an exact match. Our active directory group memberships are a little different (I'm a member of the Exchange Managers group and a domain admin), but I've even tried changing my group memberships without connection success.
Sync issues with exchange server is resolved by "allowing in heritable permission from the object's parent in AD". This certainly resolved the sync issues I was having when my mailbox was migrated to exchange 2010 server.
Please find the below article regarding this settings.

Sugar Boy, you rock! This was absolutely it. I think it's funny that as a domain admin, I wasn't allowed to do things my users could! :0)
Incidentally, I changed the setting last week, and it never reverted back. Apparently my domain is not set to schedule that permissions check.
Does anyone know what permission is inherited from the parent OU that allows mobile access to the Exchange Server? It would be nice to selectively apply this permission to the domain admins instead of inheriting all permissions.
I've been on this for two days now and still can't get mail to sync. i've tried everything in this forum and in others to no avail. OWA, windows mobile devices all work fine. Running exchange 2003 sp2. Test it on 3G os3 same issue - Cannot Get Mail, connection to server failed... Any ideas as to whats wrong?
Hi, I've been having the same issues since OS4. Tried downloading the various patches that've suggested. Deleted accounts, reset, reinstalled & reconfigured. My IT dept confirms that Exchange 2003 hasn't been changed, therefore it's Apple. They need to sort it ASAP.
Not sure where to go from here.... I have exchange 2003 direct push working at two seperate sites, OWA works fine, windows mobile work with no issues it is just IPHONES!
Tried everything possible from all forums and no joy. iPhone 3G os3, 3GS, os4 and iPhone 4 os4 nothing on any of them... neeed some help please guys... is this isolated down to iPhones or am i seriously missing something??? i'm no dunce - Honestly!
Same issue, Exch 2003 SP2. The workaround for me was clearing out the inbox - can get away with about a week's worth of mail in there. Has that not worked?
Hi Baslow,
I have been banging my head againt the wall for a week and I finally got my phone to sync. I also have sbs 2003, sp2 etc... I have switched from a blackberry to an iphone and the mistake I have been making was trying to use the same server information for the iphone that I would punch in when setting up my blackberry. When you put in your sever information into the iphone, it does not have to start with "http:// or
https://" and do not put on "/exchange" after the server name.
In same boat, but my workaround has been to empty the inbox except for 50-100 messages. Moved them to a second inbox. Seems to work, but other folders still aren't accessible.
I have the same problem. Yesterday my iphone4 and my ipad were working very well
and now it's connection to server failed. Those who have Blackberries seems to have no problems (IT supported). I hope they didn't block us out.
