MacBook Pro (2010) Freeze

Anyone else with the new i7 MBP experiencing a hard freeze? No Grey Screen of Death, just freezing screen and input. Only remedy is to hold the power button to cycle the power.

It has frozen twice in the last week. Both times the machine was on battery power and certainly not under load - just light browsing, no gaming.

Just curious if this is going to be a longer term problem...

Same issues w/no fix. Pretty poor situation.

- Standard OS (>= 10.6.5) update causes computer to randomly crash.
- Can't take it to Genius Bar because it's not a hardware issue that replacing/swapping will fix.
- No word from Apple about a forthcoming firmware update or even acknowledging the issue.

Apps that seem to trigger crashes at various points:
- Transmit
- Sparrow Mail
- ScreenSaver
- Pixelmator

Let me add my name to those affected. Total freeze (couldn't ssh in) with barely any load on a MBP 2010 running OS X 10.6.6. Following suggestions regarding graphics card switching in this thread I installed an app ( http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus ) that allows switching manually between graphics cards. I managed to reproduce the freeze almost immediately - but only once. All fine since. Will keep tinkering and post if I find out more.

I have also filed a bug report with Apple.

My MBP is at the Apple store right now. It's been there since yesterday afternoon. They said they were going to run a test on it to basically max out the CPU/GPU/RAM and try to get it to freeze. I haven't gotten a call yet, but they put a new logic board on order in case something came up. It still sounds a lot like a software issue to me, but I'll see what their tests come up with and (if it's the case) what a new logic board will do for my machine in particular.

I don't know what happened to the other thread that was oriented more towards beachball freezes, but it appears a lot of people are using this thread for it anyways.

I have a mid-2010 MBP, the 15" Core i7 version and bought it back in July or August. It took a while for me to experience the beach ball/pinwheel freezes, but I'd get the spinning pinwheel and couldn't work on anything during the pinwheel. It would last for 30 seconds to a minute, maybe two minutes before I'd get control back. It would happen several times a day, every day.

I can't figure out what was causing it. It seemed random, but generally involved switching focus from one app to another or starting/quitting an app. I saw nothing suspicious in the Console logs, no CPU spikes, plenty of free memory, no unusual sounds, using an aftermarket HDD, and changing dynamic graphics switching did not prevent the problem.

Recently, I decided that it was pointless for me to have the secure virtual memory and turned that function off in the System Preferences panel, under Security. Well, it's been two days and I haven't had a pinwheel last for more than a few seconds. Some of y'all should try turning off the secure virtual memory and see if that works for you.

Apple still has my laptop since yesterday. They said they ran a 24-hour "Max CPU" to basically overload the machine and no freezes occurred. I'm wondering if they run this test off of an external installation of OSX. It wouldn't make much sense for them to do that because then it would only account for hardware failures, but I think I'll ask when they call tomorrow.

I told them that it happens when I'm watching movies from the HDD or streaming Netflix/Hulu. They told me that the test they ran plays multiple videos at once to stress the GPU. They're holding it over night (again) to run a full diagnostics test on it. Doubt they'll find any failures with the hardware...it still seems to be a software issue to me. Especially when so many people with such different configurations are experiencing the same problem.

Fingers crossed...let's hope they find something. I told them about this thread (not sure if they'll find it or look for it) and also pushed that it should be seriously looked into by Apple...not just a 1 store's Genius Bar.

Ok, since my last post the freeze happened again (four times in 3 days now - after ca three months of perfect operation). Interestingly, it happened while I was using an external display (LCD still active though). I understand that only the NVIDIA GPU is used when connected to an external display (this is confirmed by the gfxCardStatus indicator) - would that imply that no graphics card switching occurred prior to the freeze? Where does that leave us wrt to the GPU hypothesis? ....

This may be of help to many of the users here. This was in my email this morning.

Hello,

This email is to inform you that the claims phase of the NVIDIA GPU class action settlement begins on January 13, 2011.

I'd be EXTREMELY suspicious of that email/website.

Looks like a scam. Smells like a scam. Do NOT give them any details.

Also on further investigation of the link, it has nothing to do with the issue most people are having in this thread. Only Apple can replace the components of the laptop, any claims by those people that they can are false.

Jan 13, 2011 9:09 AM in response to Artitron

Just got a call from the Apple store that has my laptop. They said they ran a full diagnostics test on it overnight and everything came back clean. Now they're going to open FireFox and try to watch Netflix because I told them that's usually what causes the issue for me. They also said they were going to run a "graphics stress test" on it at the same time to try and get it to freeze. What gives? I bet when I get the laptop back it'll crash within 3 hours. Is there something magical about Apple computers when they're inside Apple stores?! So frustrating!

Jan 13, 2011 9:12 AM in response to jtweezy

The mac technician at my local apple store was able, after an entire day of using the laptop, to reproduce the freezes. He even booted up from a different disk, and observed the freezes. He admitted that all the diagnostics he ran came back clean, and that the pattern of freezes, which were seemingly random and inconsistent (i.e. not related to any specific activity or part), did not give any hints as to what was wrong. He ended up replacing the logic board. So far I have had zero freezes, and I have been using the laptop pretty constantly for 3 days now.

Jan 13, 2011 11:15 AM in response to Artitron

I've reinstalled, some days ago, when I said I would 😝 And everything's running fine. Though Win7 doesn't take kindly on putting in the iSight (with VirtualBox)!!! So I am reinstalling Windows 7 in the virtual box.

Though there is Messenger for Mac and Mercury Messenger, they aren't usable in terms of webcam or file transfer. Probably because Microsoft is breaking stuff? First it worked, webcam, and then it did not anymore...

Anyway, have to use a pc-laptop to cam with my friend. So I'll be Blender'ing on my Mac and camming on my other laptop.

This is crazy though... Isn't there a solution?

Jan 13, 2011 7:22 PM in response to jtweezy

I had/have this issue on a 2010 MBP 17" I took it into the Genius bar within the first 30 days of owning it.

I did not demonstrate the freeze but I did have a video of it on my iPhone when I went into talk to the Genius at my local store. I also had a bit of the console log around the time the freeze occurred. In the end the Genius did not look at the video and was not very interested in the console log snippet. I was told to remove my 3rd party RAM and see if the problem resurfaced. I use this machine for work (I am a programmer) so I was fairly unhappy with this outcome.

I recieved a survey request from Apple the next day (after running hardware test on the factory RAM and the 3rd party RAM - no issues with either) and used the opportunity to express my frustration. I recieved a call for a business rep at the Apple store (this Apple store has a dedicated Business department) and I explained to him my predicament. I was also able to tell him that I can make the freeze occur by running IORegistryExplorer.app (part of the Devleoper tools installed with XCode) - I found information in this thread posted by gmarinov ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11908723#11908723) that describes the issue - author of that post seems to think that the issue is software. At the time I was not convinced. The Business rep told me that he would explore my options and get back to me. In the end he told me that I could get it repaired (A main new logic board) or exchange it since I was within 30 days. I then called Apple Support and they processed my replacement since the local store had marked it as a hardware failure, likely at the request of the Business rep.

The machine was a refurb. I received a new refurb machine hours ago. I can recreate the freeze on this one by having IORegistryExplorer running and then launching something that kicks the video card to use discrete graphics - in one case simply opening up the Trackpad prefpane (which shows demo videos.)

This leads me to believe that gmarinov is correct - it is a kernel issue with graphics switching. I plan to continue to use gfxCardStatus but manually switch between graphics cards. Prior to this machine I had the first gen unibody MBP and never used the discrete graphics card. I hope that keeping to intel graphics will avoid these freezes.
