Belkin Network USB Hub (F5L009) - problem solved!

This problem relates to the fact that once again Belkin haven't bothered to update the installation software for their great USB Hub...not happy! Ironically this is the same problem Belkin had with this device when it came out back in 2007, with earlier versions of Mac OSX V (10.5); it's a simple fix and yet they have basically stumbled again for Snow Leopard!

PROBLEM: Belkin Network USB Hub F5L009 gives an error message "SXUPTP driver has not been installed" when you instal the software if you have Snow Leopard.

SOLUTION:
1. Download "SX Virtual link for Mac" V3.3.0 (Date 11/13/2009) from http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
2. You will have downloaded a zip file called "sx-virtual link_mac330.zip"; unzipping this will give you a folder named "s-42a330".
3. Within that folder, navigate to SXVirtualLink>contained_packages>Driver>10.6 (the 10.6 refers to Snow Leopard OS); inside there is a file called "Silex_kext" dated 5/11/2009
4. Drag this file into the installation folder Utility>Connect>contained_packages; it will ask if you want to replace the older version of this file that exists there. Click "yes".

Now you can go through the normal installation process using the modified package, as per the manual, and hey presto, everything works magically!!

[If for some reason you don't have the installation disk to start with, or have a problem sticking it on your desktop, it is available at http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/...20hub/r_id/166 as F5L009 Driver - Mac (version 1.5.0, OS compatibility : Mac OS 10.5; note there is no 10.6 compatible version - and THAT is the core of the problem with the installation disk in the first place).

QUESTION: I know nothing about what the **** I am doing, and yet managed to figure this out from Googling and reading - why can't the brains at Belkin have done the same - it is a trivial exercise for them to have made a version 1.6.0 compatible with Snow Leopard. I am seriously unimpressed!

James,

I also encountered this after the initial install of the SXVirtualLink_10_6 installer package. However, this package is dated 17 Oct 2009, while there is a more recent kernel extension package available under:

SXVirtualLink/contained_packages/Driver/10_6/Silex_kext (29 March 2010)

I ran this installer package after installing the SXVirtualLink_10_6, rebooted my machine, and now I got rid of the connection failed messages. So far I tested the hub with 2 printers and it seems to work fine.

Hi,

I also bought a Belkin network usb hub, i'm running Lion but when i install the SXvirtuallink_10_6 software with the 10.6 Silex kext it all connects well!, but after a minute or 2 it constantly disconnects my usb devices all the time?, i have no idea what could be the problem because when i read these latest posts in this thread there were some persons who had succes with installing the Belkin network usb hub with the Silex software and the 10.6 Silex kext under Lion OS.

So please help me to find a solution!

Thanks in advance!

I recently contacted Belkin to inform them that my home Base did not work under OS X Lion.

Belkin replied that Belkin had discontinued my product and was not able to support the software of my 4 months old Belkin Home Base (reed their answer below)

This answer really ***** !

Today I found here in this tread this simple solution to make it all work again.

So, why those clever boys of Belkin were not able to provide that answer?

Only interested in selling new products I suppose?

Or do they have to pay a fee for the new Silex kext 10.6 when they provide us this update?

This was the answer I receaved from Belkin:

Good morning, thank you for your e-mail.

I am very sorry to hear of your issue.

I am sorry to say that the Belkin Home Base's software is not compatible with Mac OS Lion. I regret to say that the product was discontinued sometime ago and it will be unlikely that any further software will be developed for the product so please accept my sincere apologies for this. I can only suggest you speak to your reseller who you purchased the product from for a refund as the product is not compatible with your OS.

Once again please accept my apologies for your issue.

Deja vu - I had all but forgotten I ever went through this going from 10.5 to 10.6. Of course when I upgraded to Lion, it all went pear shaped and said I could no longer use the Belkin... I was about to throw it out when I dredged up this thread. Ironically I had uninstalled the old version of the software, so it also complained when I tried to reinstal it - the same stupid message about PowerPC...

Thankfully, I have simply installed the whole Silex package (even tho it says it is for 10.6, it works fine on 10.7), and other than the GUI being different it all works sweetly. Recognises USB sticks, my USB label printer etc. So "thank you" for the discussions that happened subsequent to my post - it inspired me to try trashing the Belkin software! I suspect it will be a long time before I buy Belkin again!

I stil have the same problem as others regarding things disconnecting after a short time. If anyone has a solution, it would be great...there is an option in the Silex GUI, that for printers, it automatically connects them as soon as you hit print, which is the only time you actually need them connected. In the Silex GUI, you select the printer, right click, select PROPERTIES..., the CONNECT, the Connect Automatically only for printing, which opens a self-explanatory dialog box.

I know this doesn't help for plugging in USB sticks or memory, but for printers it works a treat.
