Belkin Network USB Hub (F5L009) - problem solved!

This problem relates to the fact that once again Belkin haven't bothered to update the installation software for their great USB Hub...not happy! Ironically this is the same problem Belkin had with this device when it came out back in 2007, with earlier versions of Mac OSX V (10.5); it's a simple fix and yet they have basically stumbled again for Snow Leopard!

PROBLEM: Belkin Network USB Hub F5L009 gives an error message "SXUPTP driver has not been installed" when you instal the software if you have Snow Leopard.

SOLUTION:
1. Download "SX Virtual link for Mac" V3.3.0 (Date 11/13/2009) from http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
2. You will have downloaded a zip file called "sx-virtual link_mac330.zip"; unzipping this will give you a folder named "s-42a330".
3. Within that folder, navigate to SXVirtualLink>contained_packages>Driver>10.6 (the 10.6 refers to Snow Leopard OS); inside there is a file called "Silex_kext" dated 5/11/2009
4. Drag this file into the installation folder Utility>Connect>contained_packages; it will ask if you want to replace the older version of this file that exists there. Click "yes".

Now you can go through the normal installation process using the modified package, as per the manual, and hey presto, everything works magically!!

[If for some reason you don't have the installation disk to start with, or have a problem sticking it on your desktop, it is available at http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/...20hub/r_id/166 as F5L009 Driver - Mac (version 1.5.0, OS compatibility : Mac OS 10.5; note there is no 10.6 compatible version - and THAT is the core of the problem with the installation disk in the first place).

QUESTION: I know nothing about what the **** I am doing, and yet managed to figure this out from Googling and reading - why can't the brains at Belkin have done the same - it is a trivial exercise for them to have made a version 1.6.0 compatible with Snow Leopard. I am seriously unimpressed!

SOLUTION TO CONSTANT DISCONNECT (Running Snow Leopard 10.6, Belkin USB Network Hub, and external WD hard drive)

After trying everything from disabling the DHCP on the usb server (notorious Belkin of course), updating firmware, etc. this is strange solution that I found.

-- Run both the native Belkin Control Center application and the SX Virtual Link at the same -- my external storage stays connect as long as I want and my drive mounts instantly. (Simple solution)

Problem 1 - Running Only Belkin Control Center

Connection is constant, but the drive fails to mount randomly. I could only get the drive to mount maybe 1 out of every 5 times I tried no matter if I formatted it MS-DOS FAT or Mac - Extended Journalized

Problem 2 - Running only SX Virtual Link

Drive consistently mounts but connection disconnects every 90 seconds.

This problem of using an external hard drive that consistently mounts to my Mac has plagued me for the last 4 days. I didn't see any other solution on here or Google-able. I hope this helps someone else out there.

Hi,

sorry for my bad english!

when I say that the belkin service *** is a shared opinion? 😉

I followed the procedure in the first post, but sometimes when I use my printer (samsung ml-1660) connect to belkin "****" hub, snow leopard goes in kernel panic!

Is a normal thing????

belkin support recommend me to reinstall the drivers (which is impossible since it gives me an error during installation). any advice? thanks

I'm not using Lion (yet), I'm still on Snow Leopard.

I have had mixed results with various combinations of Belkin and Silex software. With "all Belkin" there were problems with the software locking up and requiring a force quit, especially when waking from sleep. With "all Silex" the devices (printers and scanners, no disks) spontaneously disconnected themselves after a few (30?) seconds. With Silex drivers and Belkin front end there were other issues, I forget now exactly what.

So today I disconnected the Belkin devices and am wondering about the most painful and embarrassing way of disposing of them. There may be a way to make them work reliably but I haven't found it yet. My view of Belkin support is unprintable.

I have dug out an old (relatively) PowerPC MacBook and have tried experimentally sharing a printer connnected to it, turning it into a print server if you like. Initial results have been encouraging. Next step is to get a USB hub (NOT Belkin!) so that I have sufficient USB ports on the machine.

It's early days but I think I have a solution to this problem on 10.6.8.

I've posted in the insanelymac link above, but in short:

I had problems with

devices disconnecting at random

appearing to be connected but not working

kernel panics (iousbfamily)

Mostly these problems would happen if I had quit belkin software then reopened it later,

or if I had disconnected a device, then reconnected it later.

My solution is to revert to the versions of

IOUSBfamily.kext and

IOUSBmassstorageclass.kext

that came with 10.6.3

Since I did this, I have been able to disconnect, reconnect, quit etc without a hitch.

My networked usb devices also show under system profiler which was never the case on 10.6.8 drivers.

I'm sure apple don't recommend this approach, but if it helps you it helps you.

May not be relevant, but I'm using 'Belkin USB Print and Storage Centre V 1.1.0' and SXUPTP.kext v 1.5.1.

Well, well, well.... I am pleased I am not the only gal on the block suffering with the insufferable Belkin mystery as to why they cannot simply provide a basic update to keep their hardware in line with tech advances!

Anyway, firstly, many thanks to everyone for posting so much very good advice on this thread. I have spent the better part of a day bullishly trying to figure out how to connect my Belkin Network USB Hub to my new (and beautiful) iMac, running Lion OS X.

The best workaround out there for me has been to download the SX Virtual Link software, HOWEVER, what my mainly use my hub is to connect my external hard drives, and try as a might, I cannot see the hard drives or USB drives or any external storage devices appearing in finder, on the network or anywhere on my mac, even though it is connected through the Silex interface...

If anyone has a solution, please let me know, and I will keep trying as well, but in the meantime, here are my solutions to the problems:

1. Don't buy Belkin!!!

2. By the new Airport Extreme with USB port

3. Buy a Silex server/hub. At least they are permanently updating their drivers/firmware and have reliable products and customer support!

Good luck!

Okay... WORKING!!! (sort of)

Alright everyone, the fellas at Silex have got a brand new Virtual Link Software version that works with Lion.

Download version 3.6.2 from here:

http://www.silexeurope.com/f88196ccbe9e1a639df849f3f06fa1a6/en/home/support/prod uctgroups/common-downloads/device-server-and-virtual-link.html

This is the first solution I have seen that works with the Belkin Hub that not only connects to the drive, but also now shows in the Finder window. Yippeee! (I thought)

That being said, it seems to disconnect randomly after connect and unplugs itself from Finder.

So if anyone can figure out this last little glitch, we are all well on our way again to a working system!

Cheers

Glad you are sticking with the search <smile>!

You say version 3.6.2 but I note there is also a version 3.7.2 on the same Silex page, have you tried that?

The problem with random disconnects blighted my previous attempts to use the Silex sw too. It wasn't exactly random, there seemed to be a timeout, if you could "do it" eg print the page / document, within eg 30 seconds then it was fine, but then after some period the device just disconnected.

Nice to see some people sticking at this.

I had the timeout/disconnect issue with SX virtual link, but not with the belkin software.

As i mentioned, Different versions of iousbkext either allowed me to see devices under system profiler, or didn't.

I'd guess that this is relevant to the 'not seeing drives in finder' issue.

Currently my setup is working quite smoothly. Sometimes a device will show connected and not work, but i just restart the belkin hub and it works. It'll do I suppose.

If anyone 100% nails a lion setup i would pay the money to upgrade to 10.7.
