Belkin Network USB Hub (F5L009) - problem solved!

This problem relates to the fact that once again Belkin haven't bothered to update the installation software for their great USB Hub...not happy! Ironically this is the same problem Belkin had with this device when it came out back in 2007, with earlier versions of Mac OSX V (10.5); it's a simple fix and yet they have basically stumbled again for Snow Leopard!

PROBLEM: Belkin Network USB Hub F5L009 gives an error message "SXUPTP driver has not been installed" when you instal the software if you have Snow Leopard.

SOLUTION:
1. Download "SX Virtual link for Mac" V3.3.0 (Date 11/13/2009) from http://www.silexamerica.com/support/software/svl.html
2. You will have downloaded a zip file called "sx-virtual link_mac330.zip"; unzipping this will give you a folder named "s-42a330".
3. Within that folder, navigate to SXVirtualLink>contained_packages>Driver>10.6 (the 10.6 refers to Snow Leopard OS); inside there is a file called "Silex_kext" dated 5/11/2009
4. Drag this file into the installation folder Utility>Connect>contained_packages; it will ask if you want to replace the older version of this file that exists there. Click "yes".

Now you can go through the normal installation process using the modified package, as per the manual, and hey presto, everything works magically!!

[If for some reason you don't have the installation disk to start with, or have a problem sticking it on your desktop, it is available at http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/...20hub/r_id/166 as F5L009 Driver - Mac (version 1.5.0, OS compatibility : Mac OS 10.5; note there is no 10.6 compatible version - and THAT is the core of the problem with the installation disk in the first place).

QUESTION: I know nothing about what the **** I am doing, and yet managed to figure this out from Googling and reading - why can't the brains at Belkin have done the same - it is a trivial exercise for them to have made a version 1.6.0 compatible with Snow Leopard. I am seriously unimpressed!

SOLUTION TO CONSTANT DISCONNECT (Running Snow Leopard 10.6, Belkin USB Network Hub, and external WD hard drive)

After trying everything from disabling the DHCP on the usb server (notorious Belkin of course), updating firmware, etc. this is strange solution that I found.

-- Run both the native Belkin Control Center application and the SX Virtual Link at the same -- my external storage stays connect as long as I want and my drive mounts instantly. (Simple solution)

Problem 1 - Running Only Belkin Control Center

Connection is constant, but the drive fails to mount randomly. I could only get the drive to mount maybe 1 out of every 5 times I tried no matter if I formatted it MS-DOS FAT or Mac - Extended Journalized

Problem 2 - Running only SX Virtual Link

Drive consistently mounts but connection disconnects every 90 seconds.

This problem of using an external hard drive that consistently mounts to my Mac has plagued me for the last 4 days. I didn't see any other solution on here or Google-able. I hope this helps someone else out there.

Well, I've given it plenty of time and tried everything.

Unforunately this thing is just too unstable for me.

I've been shopping around for an alternative to this belkin, and it seems like there just isn't one in the price range!

Is anyone aware of a usb network hub that works properly with 10.6/10.7?

I don't think I can use the apple products. They seem to support hard drives and printers, but I'm sharing other devices.

This is just an observation for those of you who understand this to ponder.

I have a 10.7 and Belkin USB hub and they dont work together. This is compounded by the printer being a Canon IP4600 series which has/had a problem driver with 10.7.

I have downloaded Silex 3.6.2 and this didnt seem to work either.

Note: When I changed the name of the USB Hub - via the webpage, the SX Virtual Link sprang into life.

I havent had chance to test the reliability, but it is one of the moments where you may choose to go down on your knees and thank the Great Gods of IT for their benevolence.

I don't think I will ever buy a Belkin product again.

What did you change the name to? Was this significant?

Mine (and I think others') experience has been that the Silex sw disconnects quite quickly after it has connected (maybe 30 seconds?). Please can you tell us whether changing the name has changed this behaviour?

I think you are not alone in abandoning Belkin <sad smile>

Hi,

My Belkin NUH USB hub arrived this morning. V.excited to have a networked printer etc.

Loaded the Belkin software onto older MBP running SL, ping, devices popped up, Time Machine even kicked in.

Sweet.

iMac running Lion wouldn't accept the app as has been mentioned, it's PowerPC and all the updates on Belkin, again as mentioned, don't suit past SL. Bad Belkin 😟

So I found the Silex site and downloaded 3.6.0 for Mac, tried to install the driver for 10.6 and would get the disconnect report every time it tried to connect.

After 4 or 5 tries (thankfully the nearest window was firmly shut so nothing could be thrown out, even Googled how to bin Lion OSx), I changed the name of the device via the webpage on the laptop (not sure if this was significant, but it has been mentioned - it didn't do any harm. Changed it to BelkinNUH)

I tried the Silex Install 'Install' app in 'contained_packages>Application'. This appears to determine the correct .pkg to install?

Ping! The printer connected and the remote drive became available!

Although the Belkin Control Centre on the laptop seems stable, I might just use the SX Virtual Link on both machines, so they can play nice.

Admission - I am an expert tamperer but largely have no idea what I'm doing or how I achieve it.

This HAD to work. And now it seems to be holding.. I'll let you know if it falls over.

Sadly I'm now away for a few days, having left the printer up and running, hopefully.

I will be sure to test it with a drive.

I did notice that even though the connection to the Hub with the laptop appeared solid, to the extent of

Beginning to Time Machine, it did drop the drive. SL announced I had lost connection, usual warning about loss etc.

but the backup appeared to continue anyway?

The hub didn't like my bus powered rugged drive. Pulled too much power sadly.

I think a few reboots and it might settle in and reliably play nice with the printer long term and with the drives.

Or not. Here's hoping!

Took the head-staggers the other day and bought an Iomega Iconnect.

Seems like it does everything the belking does and more.

Has remote access too, so my iloks will never have to leave the house again! That's just sweet!!!

I'll post up and let you all know if it works out OK when it arrives, cos it was only £35 on ebay.

Iomega make mention of Lion on their site so it seems like support is there. 🙂

Could save a LOT of heartache.

The solution I found:

1. Download from http://en-us-support.belkin.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/511/~/f5l009-network-usb -hub---driversthe version: 1.5.0, OS compatibility: Mac OS 10.5 size: 55.3Mb

2. Extract the buhscd-mac-v160-080409.sit

3. Open the extracted folder "Network USB Hub/Utility/Connect" and install "ControlCenter_10_4.mpkg" do not restart

3. Open the extracted folder "Network USB Hub/Utility/Connect/contained_packages" and install (no restarting) ControlCenter_app.pkg, Silex_kext_legacy.pkg and Silex_kext.pkg

4. Press Restart in all 4 installers

5. Belking Network USB Hub Control Center will open

6. Connect devices (Wait around 30 seconds for Storage Devices to appear on Finder)

7. Enjoy!

Please can you tell us which version of the OS you are using, Mario?

I note that while the silex drivers you found look the same as the ones I used, there is a size difference and a date difference. Did the site where you found your version say anything about updates / compatibility?

It sounds as if you are using the device to connect disks. Have you tried it with printers? The problem I had with the silex setup was that the printers would spontaneously disconnect after maybe 30 seconds so it would print a single page document on a laser printer but not a high quality print on a inkjet.
