Is this a matter of hackers guessing weak passwords / intercepting emails that have clues as to what the password might be? I imagine that if accounts were actually "hacked" vs. "someone guessed your password and just logged in and messed with your account" it would be international news.

I don't want to suggest a "blame the victim" scenario, but should this issue be escalated very very very high in the Apple technical management team?

(Sorry to say if it's "just" a matter of weak passwords, they'll just roll over and go back to sleep)

I might tend to agree with you except for one thing, I play MMO's and I am paranoid about account security and my online security.

My passwords are always a long string of both uppercase/ lowercase letters and numbers. They would certainly not be something a person would just guess or even work out. I only ever used that password for itunes purchase.

As for phishing e-mails, me e-mail account only allows mail from trusted senders, and I certainly would never be stupid enough to ever give out account details or even clues to them.

I think something bigger is going on here, this seems to be a pretty organised operation. Notably here in the UK, it seems many people are getting charged for points for 'SEGA Kingdom Quest', an app they have never even downloaded.

I'm not sure Apple would be quick to admit there was a problem at their end, look how they handled the whole problem with the signal strength on the iphone. Also, it would be a major PR disaster, you only have to look at recent events with SONY.

I've now decided I won't be making any more purchases from itunes for the forseeable future, until I can be sure my account is secure with Apple.

I forgot to add, this is now starting to appear in the tech media, so I suspect is only a matter of time before the mainstream media catches on to it.

In fact, just did a quick google search and already some mainstream media reporting 'growing talk of a SONY network style hack'.

Looks like I got off lucky. I got two email reciepts this morning before I had even gotten out of bed, both apps with Chinese chracters in the titles, but whoever hacked me was an idiot. They emptied my gift card balance, but didn't authorize another computer to use my account, so why even bother? My debit card info was deleted off my account though, but no charges at the bank... I submitted a help ticket to iTunes, but judging by the rest of this thread I'm not expecting to get any help... I won't be using iTunes to make purchases anymore though.

Simply making a purchase authorizes the computer. You don't need to separately authorize then purchase (or vice-versa).

Chris,

You appear to be extremely naive. Evidently, you have never had this issue personally with Apple. I have. Apple refused to credit the amount back to me that was stolen from my account as well. I did have Pay Pal credit the stolen money though. You place too much trust in the "goodness" of an international company.

I was lucky that Apple credited my account for the bogus purchases that were made. Once I noticed that my account was hacked I immediately contacted Apple and let them know what happened. After this incident, I made my password a lot stronger and I also *remove* my CC information from my account. If I decide to make a purchase, I add my CC, make my purchase and then remove my CC. I have also gone into another site that had my CC on file and removed them as well. I will no longer trust any site to keep my information secure.
