Kyle that's kinda hard to say. It is summer and the phone being in or near the window like that will in itself induce quite a temperature increase. That said, yes, it is warmer when I take it off and I think it is pretty well documented that, given enough time, the phone discharged power faster than it can charge through the kit (when the app is in use).

Hi All,

Already had the TomTom car kit with my 3gs, and just purchased my iPhone4. It fits just fine, though you need to modify the cradle (here's how: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBCVmKY3JF8) BUT GPS doesn't work (I open the TomTom car kit app and it says 'Docked' but GPS says 'No Fix'. The bluetooth connected for the speaker phone after 6 tries, though it just says 'headset' not 'TomTom', AND the dock connector sends music and does charge the unit, though the iPhone says 'device not compatible'. I called TomTom support and she said that Apple had changed so much of the electronics that they are making a iPhone4 version, but this current one isn't supported to work with the iPhone 4.

Thanks Apple

I got my new iphone 4 today, and put the Velcro in the spot that the video said and it all works, even the GPS, the TOM TOM CAR KIT APP says fix acquired, its just like it was on the 3G but 3 times as quick tracking movement etc, due to the faster processor in the iphone 4G.

I suggest more padding, as everyone I know is getting the TOM TOM dock working 100% with iphone 4's with the right amount of padding. Id say what TOM TOM told you is a bunch of crap.

Why would you think that we would be disappointed that you are too useless to get your iphone 4 and tomtom kit to work together, when we don't even know you?

now the thing is that Apple made the charger contacts inside the iPhone 4 slightly deeper than iPhone 3G/GS and TomTom Car kit cannot reach it.

Wrong and simply not true. That might be your personal thoughts but that does not make it fact.
I suggest you read through this thread.

iphone4 and tomtom kit work just fine after the little modification.

Aug 10, 2010 12:31 PM in response to Paul Richards4

I did the modification and the TomTom app works just fine with my iphone 4. The major problem I have is the overheating. I tested the iphone and the car kit in different spots in my car, some sunny, some not. As long as I am running the app, my iphone overheats to the point where the screen shuts down, and the iphone is almost untouchable. I have to put the phone in front of the a/c vent to get it to cool down sufficiently so the screen comes back on. If I have the iphone in the car kit, but just to charge, no overheating. I sent an email to TomTom support to see what they say. I'm sure a new car kit will be the answer.

I have found it does not work.

It does if you read a few posts in this thread and find out what you need to do.

The charging prongs don't fit well.

(sigh) You are wrong. The "prongs" fit fine.

The purpose of this forum is to ask questions or to share knowledge and solutions. You are doing neither.

The answer to your problem is discussed and outlined many times throughout this thread, along with links to YouTube "how to" videos.

Aug 12, 2010 11:41 AM in response to Thomas O'Carroll

Excuse me. I also thought forums were for polite discussions. When I put mine in, it does not charge NOR does it pair with the handsfree kit. Since you "politely" pointed out the YouTube videos with solutions, I have since seen those. I have not yet, however, tried that solution. Out of the box, the iPhone 4 may fit in the holster, but it does not charge or work with the handsfree bluetooth speaker without it.

I remain....steadfast in my opinion. And for others who may think that they can just plug in new iPhone 4 and have this work WITHOUT modification, I think my comment is pretty helpful. Sorry you don't think so.

Wonder if you would think it would be ok to just come out and be critical of what others' say to their faces?

you're both right, and i agree with both of your responses.
- yes, you really should read the thread that says how to make it work, before wading in and saying something doesn't work.
- yes, as a user of the mac discussions forum you are entitled to helpful, reasonable and polite replies.

back to the thread then, (the one i started, by the way)...
i used the velcro fix about two weeks ago and it works fine (for me). it charges, i get the full-on good quality gps reception, and it plays through my car speakers. great.
thanks to all the users of the forum for passing on the knowledge!

so i have to say that the greatest disappointment has been tomtom. they have given incorrect and inconsistent replies, most of which revolve around "it's someone else's fault" or "it's not compatible" (because someone else changed the phone design...).
what's sad is that they never actually dipped in and responded +*_in the forum_*+
so i still have overheating problems (which i got on my 3gs, but worse now).
but i still have lots of useful help from friends on the forum, but none from the people i paid money to (and who will want more money to update my maps soon...).

products change.
unfortunately customer service doesn't.
