iOS 4 Initial impressions

So, I just installed iOS 4 on my 32GB 3GS. The download itself took about 3 minutes and then the installation took about 30 minutes. But to be fair, most of the installation was restoring all my data back onto the phone.

I am looking forward to messing around with the new OS and posting more impressions.

What do you guys think of the new OS?

13" MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 32 GB iPhone 3GS; 32 GB iPhone 4 Black (delivers on June 24)

I just did the update. Everything went fine. I have noticed that some of the old wallpapers are gone like Starry Starry Night and so forth. Also, does anyone know if we will be able to download other wallpapers? I am getting an iphone 4 on Thursday and I am giving my 3Gs to my sister. I like how Starry Starry Night looks on my phone right now. Any help? Everything is great besides.

my very first impression was.. HOLY **** I CANT BELIEVE I CAN SEE MY DRAGON BG BEHIND MY BUTTONS! (which i guess isnt really such a big deal since jailbroken iphones have had this feature since day one) after the initial shock wore off and i organized all my folders and such i realized i dont really need multitasking or a unified inbox and really the only thing i'm benefiting from is the folders which made me go from 4 pages to 2.. although the phone does seem a little more snappier.. and it is rather nice to see my totally awesome dragon wallpaper..

So after installation (refer to the beginning post of this thread), I have now had a chance to mess around for a while and here are some beginning impressions:

1. I LOVE the folders options. It really has cut down on the number to pages (from 6 to 2) and has given my OCD a way to express itself. 🙂

2. I'm still not sure about the unified inbox. I still find myself checking my individual mail accounts' inboxes. But I think this is more of an issue of me getting used to the new mail app. The one thing I have noticed relates only to my Gmail account. Previously, swiping a message brought up the Delete button, but now the same action brings up the Archive button. This is something I definitely have to watch out for since I am very used to deleting messages this way.

3. The home wallpaper option is very nice.

4. The Multitasking interface is very clean and efficient, except for how to close an app. It is annoying to have to hold down one of the apps to have the close option come up.

5. I really like the option for complex passcodes, instead of the old 4-digit ones.

6. Some people have mentioned that they had lost their visual voicemail under iOS 4.0. I did too for my initial try, and then it prompted for my password, and now it's back to normal.

More later...

Yup, happened to me too. Fortunately, the fix is easy, if time consuming (depending on the size of your photo library). (This worked for me using iTunes on a Mac; didn't test it on Windows.) I reconnected my iPhone 3Gs to my Mac that was running the latest iTunes. Once the iPhone info window showed up, I selected the 'Photos' tab, and deselected all of the photo albums that were selected from previous syncs, and performed a Sync operation (effectively deleting all of the photos from the iPhone). Then I reselected all of the photo albums I wanted to download, and performed the Sync again. Slowly but surely, iTunes re-"Optimized" all of those photos again and sent them down to the iPhone. When it was all done, the photos displayed properly again, with the resolution I expected...

I saw this option when I first fired up 4.0 but now I can't seem to locate it. Hints please. Thanks

Sam

It's on the multi-tasking task bar. Just flick along to the left and the icon is there.

so far i am impressed with the IOS 4, the mulit tasking feature is great the only down side is having to open it up and hold on the app to turn it off, it wouldve been better if there was an easier way to close apps you dont want to multi task, does anyone know if there is a manual on how to use all the new features and if there is a complete list of every new feature?

I installed the iOS4 on my 3GS in preparation has to familiarizing myself with it prior to getting the iPhone 4, and I absolutely love it. It took just under 24 minutes to download and probable another 5 or so minutes to install, restart etc.

I really like the multi tasking. I have so far found it to work flawlessly. I find overall that the 3GS seems noticeable faster since installing iOS4 (even though I never found the 3GS a slouch beforehand). I can't wait to see it on the iPhone 4 with it having the A4 processor.

I love the new spell checker.

I love the unified inbox.

And the folders is a great addition. Now I can have all my games put into one neat place 🙂

This is a really good software update. It will be interesting to see how the battery life is with the iOS4, with the multi tasking. Although I have never had any issues with the battery life anyways with the 3GS.

Great update Apple 🙂 🙂

I Love it so far. Folders by far is my favorite thing. I do think the 5x zoom is awesome as well and is very underrated feature. The pictures have been clear and crisp. Multitasking is great I just need my Apps to update and allow it. It's like a new phone. I thought I would get the OS update and be able to make it until march to get iPhone 4. Now after the update and being so impressed with it I find myself wanting the Iphone 4 more. I may cave before March.
